Tom Lacey Stable Tour
25 Nov 2019

TOM LACEY has made a steady start to the season with eight winners from his 73 runners but his patient approach invariably pays dividends as the season goes on and he has shown that can place his Ledbury team to good effect.

Lacey notched up 38 winners and £377,918 in prize money in 2018-19 and that numerically was one less than his previous season and he sees this season as one for putting the building blocks in place.

Tom said: “The horses have been running well and we have got an awful lot of young horses. We only have 13 with handicap mark and the handicapper has most of them. I always thought this season was going to be a building season and you have got to make these horse and you can’t go gung ho with them.”

Lacey has plenty of raw material under his care that could be putting their names up in lights in the coming months and kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can carry him and his team forward.

Winner of his only point-to-point in Ireland in May.
He got held up in the Summer after being kicked in the field and he did his first bit of work last week. He should be out in a bumper around Christmas time and he will probably stick to bumpers this season.

I hope he is going to be a fun little horse and he is in at Wetherby on Wednesday. We will learn a bit more about him after that. He seems in a good place mentally and I hope he is going to be a nice horse for the partnership that bought him. He will probably want more than 2m 2f and may go up to three miles in time.

Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 136 over fences. Successful in a handicap chase at Exeter (3m) in March when beating Garrane 13 lengths off a mark of 127. Unseated rider at the first in a handicap chase won by Militarian at Ascot (3m) on Friday.
He only got as far as the first when unseating his rider at Ascot on Friday and he is a horse who is better going right handed. We will be looking at those staying chases and he could be one for the Devon National.

Winner of one of his 7 starts and currently rated 115 over hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten seven lengths, to Mason Jar in a novices handicap hurdle at Ascot (2m 3 1/2f) this month off a mark of 112.
He is in at Taunton this week and should win off his mark. He is a horse who has had no chance at all since winning his bumper at Market Rasen. I think we have got him in the right place now and it fried his head going to Punchestown. We left the hood off him last time at Ascot and we might think of putting it back on.

He has been a bit disappointing to be honest and I thought he was a bit gutless at Kempton. He jumped the first three or four fences really well and then got into the bottom of one and he didn’t really have a cut at his fences after that. He needs to find his level.

He has had more wind surgery and he will be out in the Spring when the ground comes good. I think he’s a chaser and I want to go over fences with him. He has had a tie back now which is the last chance saloon but the surgery seems to have worked.

He is in a conditionals race at Kempton on Monday. He has always run his race and as a result the handicapper has never really cut him any slack. If he won that he could go to Wincanton on December 5 without a penalty.

There are no race for him and it is absolutely disgusting the race planners don’t have any races for horses with his sort of rating and we will have to wait until Market Rasen on Boxing Day for a suitable race. I would like to get another race into him for experience but it’s a question of why aren’t there more 0-125 handicaps.

He has schooled really well over fence but we have decided to keep him over hurdles for the moment. We feel he could end up over fences a year too soon and he shaped with some promise when reappearing at Haydock on Saturday.

He will go for the Becher Chase and we hope the fences bring out the best in him. He wants soft ground and he wants every inch of three miles. He ran in the Eider last year and was very tired afterwards but he’s a year older.

I’ve been disappointed with him to be honest and the jockeys tell me he’s not taking them forward in his races. He is not a straightforward horse and I might put some cheekpieces on him next time. He needs to learn to race and he’s only four so I don’t want to abuse him.

He will go for the Welsh National and we will look at those other long distance handicap chases. He could be an Eider horse. Last year they put him up 11lb for winning at Newcastle and it was the worst bit of handicapping I have seen in my life. Thankfully, he is coming down a little now.

Winner of two of his 5 starts and currently rated 136 over hurdles. Made an impressive reappearance at Wincanton (1m 7 1/2f) in October when beating Grey Diamond seven lengths off a mark of 127 and only fourth, beaten 14 lengths, to Highly Prized when favourite for a similar event at Huntingdon (2m) this month off a mark of 137.
He won really well at Wincanton on his reappearance we thought we were back on top. Brian Hughes said that turning out of the back at Huntingdon he thought how far do I win by and he choked. He has been for an examination and there is nothing obvious so we will probably run him in a tongue tie. He wants top of the ground and he could be a Scottish Champion Hurdle horse.
