Yannik Fouin Stable Tour
14 Nov 2019

Yannik Fouin has been the leading trainer at Cagnes-sur-Mer for the last seven years and is hoping to finish top of the list one more time this winter when he takes about forty horses down to the racecourse that is known as the jewel of the Côte d’Azur.

In the 20 years since he started training at Maisons-Laffitte, his horses have won Grade 1 races like the Prix La Haye Jousselin, France’s winter Gold Cup, as well as the Prix Alain du Breil, which has become a popular hunting ground for the likes of Willie Mullins and Paul Nicholls. Yet, it would be fair to say that he is particularly successful when taking his horses to the jump meeting at Cagnes-sur-Mer that starts on 30 November and ends on 6 January.

“I really enjoy the meeting in Cagnes-sur-Mer where I already spent the winter when I was still a jockey,” the 49-year-old trainer says. “I then started taking horses down there about 15 years ago. And seeing that it has worked out well for me, I continue to go back. At Cagnes the programme allows you to run horses at five, ten or 15 days interval, which you obviously couldn’t do at Auteuil. You have to come with horses that are ready to run and there are a lot of races for those horses that might struggle at the top level.”

There are eleven meetings this year during the jump meeting at Cagnes-sur-Mer and Yannik Fouin is hoping to have winners at every single one of them. Here, he talks to Liz Price of attheraces.com about the horses he will be taking down to the south, as well as some others that still have major targets at Auteuil.

Won a couple of good handicaps over fences, fell last time out at Auteuil.
He is a horse who earned nearly 100,000 Euros last year and is about to earn the same again this year. He is not the type of horse who does well during a meeting, but maybe this year he will come down with us to Cagnes. His performances at the back end of the season weren’t great and I think seeing that he has won races at Enghien (former Parisian racecourse, which closed a few years ago), he might do well at Cagnes. He likes good ground, which is the most important point to remember when following this horse. His best performances came in good ground. His aim could be the Grand Steeple Chase of Cagnes.

A good handicapper over hurdles at Auteuil.
I’m not sure yet if he will go down to Cagnes. He’s been down there twice already and every time he ran badly. However, if he did come, I would run him over fences rather than over hurdles. He has never run over fences in his life, but a chase in Cagnes might suit him.

Finished fourth in a little handicap for four-year-olds at Auteuil without making any notable impression.
He is what you would call in England a ‘Morning Glory’. In the morning he is ten pounds better than in the afternoon. He might be running this weekend. He will be perfect for Cagnes. He has a quick stride and I think he will be interesting to follow in Cagnes.

He an interesting contender. He won a tiny chase at Nimes, but I could see him follow in the hoof steps of Fou Du Bresil in Cagnes. He could run in the three-year-old conditions races and then go for the Grand Steeple Chase for four-year-olds.

Handicaper in 2m2f races, who is still trying to recapture his unbeaten run in Cagnes-sur-Mer as a three-year-old.
Yes, he won the Grande Course de haies at Cagnes in 1930! No joking apart, he ran really well in a handicap at Auteuil last time out in ground that he doesn’t really like. He can run in second division handicaps where he would have a great chance. He always does well at Cagnes.

Was pulled up on both of his starts in the autumn but had won a handicap hurdle at Auteuil in the spring.
There is a big question mark hanging over his head at the moment. He earnt a bit of money this year and so I was a bit limited as to where he could run. He might have the right profile for Cagnes, but I haven’t really made up my mind yet what to do with him. He needs good ground.

Came home with a couple of places at Cagnes last year. Has won some claiming races.
He always hangs to the left and is always keen. I like this horse. He gets too much weight over fences, but over hurdles it’s a different story. He lacks a little bit of class but in heavy ground, he would have a chance.

Ran successfully in 1m6f races on the flat for most of last season and recently made her hurdle debut at Argentan.
She only ran for the first time over hurdles two weeks ago. She has speed, but she still needs to get used to jumping. But I like her, I think she has a lot of speed. She will run over hurdles in Cagnes.

Extremely consistent last season at Pau and Auteuil. Has only run once this year when he was the runner-up in a hurdle race in the provinces.
I haven’t really got any fixed plans for him. He is an AQPS who has a lot of ability. He is owned by Mrs Bryant. Maybe we will leave him in peace over the winter and get him ready for next year’s season at Auteuil.

Won both of his starts over fences in Cagnes-sur-Mer last season. Has been tried in Group company at Auteuil, but lately seems to have lost his form.
He was the number 1 last year at Cagnes in the steeple-chase races. He won the Grand Steeple Chase for four-year-olds there last year. He definitely is the right horse for Cagnes-sur-Mer. This year though it is going to be a bit tougher as he will come up against the older horses, but the Grand Steeple-Chase de Cagnes could be his target. We shall see.

Enjoyed a successful meeting in Cagnes last year, but hasn’t run since July.
He will come back down to Cagnes. He won two of his three starts there last year, which was a bit of a surprise as I had taken him down on spec. He seemed in good form and he really took to the races in Cagnes. Unfortunately, I gave him a bit too much time off in the summer and he will now have to make his mid-seasonal reappearance in Cagnes, which is not ideal, but he is an interesting horse who will probably run in chases rather than in hurdle races.

He is in great form at the moment. He ran really well the time before last when he finished third in a Listed. He is getting on though in age and is no longer as good as he was. But he always runs well at Cagnes, so he is coming down as well.

One of the few horses that runs just as well at Auteuil as he does at Cagnes-sur-Mer.
He last ran at Cagnes in January but then he had a little problem and we were forced to give him a break. He is coming back nicely now and will come down with me to Cagnes-sur-Mer. If he is physically all right, he will have a nice programme to follow down there. He will run in some handicaps over hurdles and then he will run either the Grande Course de Haies (hurdles) or he will once more run in the Grand Steeple Chase of Cagnes. Last year he ran well. He jumped the second last fence in front and looked like he might win, but then was beaten into fourth. He ran well though. It’s a shame I couldn’t give him a prep race before going down to Cagnes.

Used to be trained on the flat by Alain de Royer Dupre where she won several handicaps. Then moved to Willie Mullins, for whom she ran once to finish second in a hurdle race at Galway. Now with Fouin, she won on her first start on the flat at the little known racecourse of Machecoul.
I don’t know. She will run once more again on the flat that’s for sure. She has some speed but she isn’t the youngest. She went to Ireland and I think she had an injury afterwards. She is now with me and I think if she goes back to jumping, I will run her in races open only to mares.
