Emmanuel Clayeux Stable Tour
11 Nov 2019

In Great Britain, Emmanuel Clayeux is known as the cross-country chase specialist whose contenders in the Cheltenham Cross Country Chases are always worth following.

In France, the softly spoken trainer, who is based in the little-known village of Vaumas, which lies a three-and-a-half-hour car ride south from Paris and two hours west of Lyon, is above all known as a very enthusiastic horseman.

Horses from his yard are just as successful in the major chase or hurdle races, as they are in the cross country chases, but stemming from a background of three-day eventing, he says: “I enjoy the aspect of schooling horses and the dressage involved. And I would say that Cross Country chases are my favourite races.

“However, the reason I come over to England with a lot of Cross Country Chasers has more to do with the fact that these type of races are more accessible to us. It’s a different story for the major hurdle races and big chases that are more demanding and you need some seriously good horses if you want to win them.”

A seriously good horse that could have won him a major race in the UK, is 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo, who started his career at Clayeux’s yard before he was sold to be trained by Willie Mullins for Mrs J Donnelly. Clayeux has based his business model on selling his horses and hence has no regrets but takes immense pride in Al Boum Photo’s achievements.

Here, he talks to Liz Price of about the horses he is planning on bringing over to Cheltenham this season, as well as some of the horses that will travel to Pau in the winter.

All Horses
Al Amaison
Al Gane
4 bay f Khalkevi - Al Gane
Half-sister of Al Boum Photo, she didn’t run as a three-year-old and just won a chase over 2m2f from stable companion Fontannes at Lignieres.
She is not in the same class as her brother. But she is a nice little filly that will go and run in Pau this winter. I like her.
Buck's Boum
6 bay f Buck's Boum - Talpa
Cross Country chase specialist and a horse to follow at Pau.
She won the Grand Cross de Lyon and will now go down to Pau for the winter. She does well at Pau. She only runs in Cross Country chases.
Diesel D'allier
Iena D'allier
Kap Rock
6 gr g Kap Rock - Iena D'allier
He won three Cross Country Chases in Pau in the 2017/18 season.
He is entered in the Glenfarclas cross at Cheltenham on November 15th. He also had an entry at Compiegne, but I think I rather take him to England. He did well at Pau but recently disappointed me a bit. I don’t know if he can run in the big Cross Country races. I fear he might not be up to it. However, over 3m6f at Cheltenham he might be able to do well.
5 bay f Khalkevi - Tamise
Runner-up to Bipolaire in the Grade 1 Prix La Haye Jousselin, the rapidly improving Ebonite is currently on a break, but definitely a horse to follow for next year’s Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.
I have a yard not far from here where horses can relax and recover, and I sent her there so that I wouldn’t be tempted to run her again in three weeks’ time. She is a horse I am hoping to run in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. We also talked about taking her to England, but first we will go for the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. That is the logical goal for her considering what she has achieved this year.
Eclair Mag
5 bay g Network - Katerinette
He made a good start over hurdles this season but then seemed to struggle. Fell on his first attempt in a Cross Country Chase.
I think we can say that he stole a race at Auteuil. I believe it might have been the highlight of his career. I don’t really know what I will do with him. I tried him in the Cross, but he fell after making a silly mistake. I will try him in a Cross again, but I’m not sure he is very talented. He is very nice, but maybe limited.
Ecume Atlantique
Force Atlantique
5 bay g Satri - Force Atlantique
Finished sixth behind his stable companion Enjeu D’Arthel in the Listed Prix Fondeur at Auteuil.
I really liked his last performance. He is a very big horse and a very late developer. And I am certain he is made for English fences, so he will be going over to England this winter. Where and when I don’t know, but I am fairly certain that he is a horse for England. He has such a big frame and should easily adapt to the rhythm of English races. He will like the longer trips and heavy ground and he will above all appreciate obstacles that are similar from the first to the last, not like Autueil where there are too many different obstacles, which puts him off his jumping. In England, I think he will like the monotony of the fences. I could be wrong, but I will give it a go.
Coastal Path
5 che g Coastal Path - Platine
He ran fourth in the Listed Prix Fondeur, the same race won by his stable companion Enjeu d’Arthel. Made a much better impression when winning over hurdles the time before.
I was a bit disappointed with his last run. He made lots of mistakes and I am not sure yet what to make of him. I am not sure if he can step up in class. He has won over hurdles and he doesn’t seem to be that comfortable over fences. He had a bad accident at four and I have the impression he isn’t quite right somewhere but for the time being I haven’t found out exactly what is bothering him. I am not sure where he will run next.
Enjeu D'arthel
Olga D'arthel
Saddler Maker
5 b g Saddler Maker - Olga D'arthel
Lightly raced, very consistent and has just successfully made the step up in class when he won a listed at Auteuil over the 48 jumping weekend where he beat a quality field.
He is growing up and is slowly getting tougher. He is a very consistent and he could run in three weeks’ time in the Prix Georges Courtois. However, this race comes up quickly and this horse likes to have about five to six weeks in between his races. So, he will tell us if he is ready for it or not. He is also entered in the King George at Kempton. I think he would suit English racing and one of his owners is English, so it’s not impossible that he will go over to England at one stage. If he runs in three weeks’ time, he probably wouldn’t run in England. In any case, if he does go over, it is to see how he handles the English fences and a flat track. We wouldn’t dream of winning, but a place would be nice. Because of the way our season is, we have the advantage of bringing horses at the top of their form whilst the English horses are still at the beginning of the season. It’s a dream, but that is why we are in this business aren’t we?
Epi Tete
Liste En Tete
Buck's Boum
5 bay g Buck's Boum - Liste En Tete
Has not run since June 2018.
He hasn’t run a lot and had some leg issues as a four-year-old. As he has not run a lot, he has a lot of options at Pau. I think he is a good horse.
Maorie Antique
5 bay f Network - Maorie Antique
Group 3 placed over fences at Compiegne, she was third in a Listed at Auteuil over hurdles and is going in the right direction.
She ran well the other day. She will probably run in the Prix Georges Courtois. I ran her twice over hurdles and now she will return over fences. I like her, but she is not very consistent. She acts like a girl, unlike Ebonite who is a proper tomboy. When she is in good form, she can do great things, but when she decides it’s not her day then that’s it. A filly with lots of quality, but inconsistent.
Extra Lida
Irish Wells
5 bay f Irish Wells - Uneeklida
A winner at Pau over fences at the beginning of the year, she has struggled to make an impression at Auteuil.
She won at Pau, but didn’t have a great meeting over fences. So, I’m taking her back this year to run her in the Cross Country Chases. We used to run horses in Cross races that were lacking speed, but that is no longer the case as the races have become very fast today. Now we look for horses that can adapt to the obstacles, to crossing the roads etc. and who like going uphill and downhill. I am lucky to have a jockey like Felix de Giles who is such a good rider and he is part of the reason why I am now running more horses in Cross Country Chases. He is the best Cross Country Chase jockey we have in France.
Saddler Maker
4 bay g Saddler Maker - Oddy
After running only on the flat last year, he won his first hurdle race on his fourth start. Ran well at Auteuil last time out and looks promising.
This is a horse I like. I own him together with Roger Stanley who had Crands Crus in England. He is a very complicated horse. It took me a long time to get him right but I am seeing the light now at the end of the tunnel. He ran over fences, but I didn’t want to run him again over fences as that would limit his options, so I sent him to Auteuil to run over hurdles. He will now go to Pau for the meeting. My ambition is for him to win a race or two for AQPS and then take him chasing at Auteuil next year.
French Bird
Sacree Mome
4 bay f Cokoriko - Sacree Mome
A winner over hurdles and fences, she hasn’t quite yet managed that step up in class.
The other day, she didn’t run very well, and I think she doesn’t like heavy ground. And she also scoped dirty after the race, so we have two explanations for that last run. She will go to Pau and I will run her in an easy race at the beginning of the meeting.
Fly To Sky
8 bay g Nickname - Fly To Sky
Interestingly, he has never run at Auteuil, but ran nearly exclusively this year at Lyon where he won the racecourse’s biggest steeple chase in May.
He won the Grand Steeple Chase de Lyon. The last few times he ran over hurdles. He ran well and his main ambition now will be the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau.
3-y-o ch g Bach – Six Royale
Ran once on the flat and finished fourth on his hurdle debut at Lyon.
I think he has some talent. He ran well first time out.
3 bay f Network - Tamise
She ran fourth at Auteuil in a conditions race over hurdles for three-year-old fillies.
She ran well at Auteuil. I might run her again this season, but I think she will be a good four-year-old next year.
Grisy Apple's
Apple's For Ever
4 gre g Montmartre - Apple's For Ever
A half-brother of Apple’s Jade, but not quite that talented.
He is named after a nightclub. I don’t know what the name means, but it was a nightclub in the North of Paris. He will run in a listed at Compiegne. He is not a champion, but he is slowly getting tougher. We are not sure if he is capable of stepping up. We will see how he does in the listed race.
Net Lady
Dame De Treve
7 bay f Network - Dame De Treve
Has won several Cross Country chases and is certain to run a few times at Pau this winter. Very consistent.
She will run in the Grand Cross of Compiegne on the November 11th. She only runs in Cross Country Chases. I can’t bring her over to England because the Cross at Cheltenham might be too long for her.
Nuits Premier Cru
Fee Magic
Buck's Boum
7 bay g Buck's Boum - Fee Magic
Comes from the same family as Grands Crus. He finished fourth in a 3m1 ½ f Listed hurdle race at Cheltenham in November 2017.
Although he is seven years old, he only discovered the Auteuil racecourse at the beginning of this month. He ran well in a handicap even though he doesn’t like soft ground. I regret a little bit that I ran him because he had a good entry at Cheltenham on the weekend of the 15th of November, but that comes too quick now. He will go to Pau this winter instead. He is well placed in the handicap and he could run the Grand Steeple Chase de Pau for a place. He might not have the same class as his brothers Grands Cru and Gevery Chambertin but he is tough.
Qui Ira Loin
Qualite Controlee
7 bay g Laveron - Qualite Controlee
Very consistent chaser over 2m5f. Missed out on Pau last season.
He is certainly very consistent. He is not a world champion, but he always gives everything. He is very straight forward and he is my teacher at home, because I put the young riders on him and he will teach them how it’s done.
3 ch f Samum – Allier
Still looking for her first victory, she made a very good impression when she finished third on her chase debut at Lyon in October.
I like this filly. She was named after Paul Nicholls came to see me once. I invited him for lunch at my house and when he sat down, he took my seat, so I said to him that is my seat and I think he took me seriously and only afterwards cottoned on that I had been joking. So, I called this filly Thatsmyseat. I’m getting her ready for Pau, she is improving.
4 bay g Sholokhov - Escort'beauty
Ran eighth on his debut in a hurdle race at Auteuil in October 2018. Hasn’t run since.
He is the brother of Thatsmyseat but he is not as good as him. He will run in Pau. He will have a nice programme there. He is very big and needed some time. He will run over hurdles and fences.
Urgent De Gregaine
Truth Or Dare
11 b g Truth Or Dare - Hispanie
Two years in a row beaten by Tiger Roll in the Cheltenham festival Glenfarclas Chase, but still a horse who needs to be respected when he comes over here.
He hasn’t run since he finished third to Tiger Roll at the Cheltenham Festival in March. He hasn’t run since because he was injured, but nothing important though. He is entered at Cheltenham in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase on November 15th, but I don’t know yet if he will run. I have entered another horse called Diesel D’Allier and I shall see if I come over with them. It will depend on the entries and my organisation.
