Dominique Bressou Stable Tour
28 Oct 2019

Dominique Bressou is preparing himself for an emotional end of the season, as the time has come to send his stable star Milord Thomas, the 2015 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and three-times Prix la Haye Jousselin winner, into well-deserved retirement.

The Magalen O Bryant-owned ten-year-old was a gamechanger in Dominque Bressou’s career and could run one final time in the Prix la Haye Jousselin, a race that he dominated from 2014 to 2016.

“Milord Thomas took me to the biggest stage in the life of a trainer when he won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and in doing so he proved that I could train good horses,” says 58-year-old Bressou a former jump jockey who started training in Chantilly 15 years ago.

“It was also thanks to him that the Papot family started to send me horses. Five years ago, I left Chantilly to start training in the newly-built training centre of Dragey, close to Saint Michael’s Mount.

“It was a big step, because no-one had any reference points in terms of how the tracks would work for getting the horses fit and ready, but thanks to Milord Thomas’s exploits, instead of forgetting me because I moved away from Chantilly, people started sending me horses.”

Dominique Bressou today trains for the biggest names in French jump racing and is going to saddle no less than three horses in the various Grade 1 races of the 48-hour jump weekend at Auteuil on the first weekend in November.

For a trainer that looks after about 50 horses, this is no small feat, especially as he also has numerous starters in the Grade 2 and 3 races of that same weekend.

Here, he guides Liz Price of attheraces.com through the pick of his team.

*The horses covered can now be added to your Tracker, which has been expanded to cover French racing.*

A runner-up over fences on his last five starts, he has been very disappointing since his mid-seasonal reappearance
He is a very good colt who was the runner-up in the Grade 1 Prix Ferdinand Dufaure in the spring. He then had a bit of a break and since he has come back, he hasn’t run very well. He made a massive mistake when he jumped the water jump at Auteuil last time out and that interrupted his rhythm and he never got back into the race. He will run in the Prix Maurice Gillois and I am hoping for a better performance. He will be wearing cheek pieces and I hope that in combination with soft ground, he will produce an improved performance.

Unraced.
He is a horse I like a lot. He will make his debut at the beginning of November at Compiegne in a race for unraced horses. I think he is a horse who will quickly run in handicaps.

Trained by Willie Mullins at one stage, now back in France and coming back gently after experiencing some tendon issues.
He has come back into training and he probably will run soon at Auteuil. But he is a horse I want to take to Pau in the winter. His main goal will be the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau.

Must be very close to finally winning his first Graded race.
He ran really well last time out when he was second. He was beaten by l’Autonomie, who is an extremely smart filly. He will run next in the Grade 1 Prix Renaud du Vivier, which is the champion hurdle race for four-year-olds. I hope he will produce another good performance similar to his last one. If we were to finish second or third, I would be very happy.

Improving type. Won a listed chase from more experienced horses at Auteuil. Horse with a future.
He won a nice chase at Auteuil. He will run in Prix Congress, which I had won in the past with Echiquier Royal. That race is on the 2nd of November. I hope he will show us that the other day was not a fluke. I had a look at the entries and there are not that many new horses in that race, so I hope that he will confirm the form from last time out.

He is coming back slowly after a break of nearly two years. If he comes back to his best, he would be an interesting chaser to follow.
He was a very smart three-year-old who won the Grade 2 Prix Congress, which is the Grand Steeple Chase for three-year-olds. Unfortunately, he hasn’t got the strongest legs and so he didn’t run for a long time. But on his last start he proved that he is still a good horse. He is entered in the Prix Fondeur on the 3rd November at Auteuil, but I prefer to wait another week and run him in a listed over 2m6f. I hope that he will prove that this trip is not beyond him. I don’t know if he has the stamina to stay over a trip longer than 2m2f. It’s the big question mark for me. He is a horse that I would like to run in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris next year, so this is to see if he can stay.

Very consistent hurdler, he was expected to win the Grade 3 Prix Carmathen, a prep race for the Grand Prix d’Automne, but even though he led until the final hurdle, he was just beaten on the flat by the filly Paul’s Saga. On equal weights it would have had a different ending.
He will run the Grade 1 Grand Prix d’Automne. He won it last year and he is in great form. The other day he was beaten because he jumped big over the final hurdle and then hit the ground hard on the other side. I think he would have won if he hadn’t made that mistake. If he runs well in the Grand Prix d’Automne, he could run again in the Prix Olry-Roederer at the end of the season at Auteuil.

Has been knocking on the door in handicap company and should be winning one soon.
He was the runner-up in a handicap at Auteuil and he will run in another handicap for three-year-olds before the end of the season. He ran very well the other day. He is a horse to follow, I think he will be even better next year. He is an interesting horse.

A National Hunt champion, who was brilliant over the big fences and the longer trips at Auteuil, he is now starting to show his age. He will always produce an honest performance and should never be underestimated, but it would be fair to say that the best days are probably behind him.
He has had a few problems. He had a tendon issue, which is resolved, but his fetlock is still a bit sensitive. He is fine though at the moment, so he might run the Prix la Haye Jousselin. If he does, I think it will be the last race of the year, if not of his career. I will have a talk with connections and the veterinarian and then we shall see. There is also a slight possibility that we wait for the Prix Georges Courtois, but I think he will retire at the end of the year. He has won over 2 Million Euros in prize-money and he deserves to enjoy retirement.

The little brother of Raffles Sun, he is still trying to make his mark but seems to be going in the right direction.
He ran well at Compiegne, but I think he will be better suited by Auteuil and by softer if not heavy ground. He is also running on the 2nd of November in the Prix Oeneas.

Fourth in the Prix Carmarthen, behind stable mate Galop Marin, this was a really good performance and there should be more to come.
On the 1st of November she will run in a prep race for the Grande Course de haies de Compiegne at Compiegne. She will then run in a race for four-year-old and five-year-old fillies and mares at Auteuil. She won that race last year. I think it’s on the 24th or so of November. I like this mare, she is a very consistent who always gives everything. This is by the way the last time that she will run. After that she will go to stud.

Won on her fifth start but made a good impression when running over fences last time out.
She won a hurdle race at Clairefontaine and then was the runner-up on her first start over the fences at Fontainebleau. She will run in another chase open to fillies and mares only at Fontainebleau again. She is a bit too high in the handicap for my liking. It’s not because she won at Clairefontaine that she should have a rating of 62 (French handicap rating). We shall see if she goes to Pau or not.

Even though he has won over hurdles, he has really come into his own in this second half of the season and a return over the fences has seen him flourish.
He ran really well on his first start over fences at Compiegne this autumn. He might even have won that day if he hadn’t been hindered by a horse that fell in front of him. He was only beaten half a length. He last ran in an amateur race at Auteuil and he was second again behind a Guillaume Macaire trained horse that was in a different class. He will run in a handicap on the 2nd of November over 2m6f, which is a distance he hasn’t run over yet, but I hope he will run well.
