David Cottin Stable Tour
25 Oct 2019

Three-time former Champion jockey David Cottin, who partnered Long Run to win the Grade 1 Prix Cambaceres and Prix Maurice Gillois before he was taken across the Channel to join the yard of Nicky Henderson, is about to complete his second season as a trainer and is rapidly establishing himself as one of the leading trainers in the country.

Following 33 winners in 2018, thanks to 51 victories he currently ranks in fifth position in the French trainers’ table and the season is still far from over.

He has chosen Lamorlaye, next to Chantilly, as his main base, but he is also in charge of his father Philippe’s stable close to Lion-d’Angers, where young horses are broken and pre-trained.
He currently has about 95 horses in training and at this time of the season, he is already starting to look forward to the meeting at Pau where he will base himself during the months of December, January and early February.

Many of his charges are cross-country specialists that are targeting the Grand Cross de Pau, but could also travel to England to run at Cheltenham. “I’m taking between 40 and 65 horses down to Pau,” confirms 30-year-old David Cottin.

“Pau is a great meeting that goes on for two months. I used to ride at Pau every winter during my career as a jockey. In fact, I already used to go there with my parents when I was young. You could say it’s in my blood. I just love it there.”

Here, Cottin details his runners for the months ahead to attheraces.com’s Liz Price.

*The horses covered can now be added to your Tracker, which has been expanded to cover French racing.*

Very consistent Cross-Country chase specialist with lots of stamina. 2018 winner of the Grand Steeple-Chase Cross-Country de Compiegne.
He is in good form and working well. He will make his seasonal reappearance in the Grand Cross de Compiegne. And then he will go to Cheltenham in December to run in the Cross-Country Chase there.

A regular handicapper on the flat when he was trained by Eric Libaud, he won on his very first start in a listed hurdle race at Auteuil, but was then beaten on his second start.
He could run at Cheltenham on the 15th November in a hurdle race over 2m5f. He hasn’t run over that trip, but this looks like the right race for him.

Formerly trained by Ross O’Sullivan, she finished 8th in last year’s Grand National and was only just beaten on her first start for David Cottin in a hurdle race at Bordeaux.
She produced a very nice performance on her mid-season return at Bordeaux. She will run again at the end of this month at Fontainebleau over the hurdles. And then her main goal is the Prix Georges Courtois, a Grade 2 race at the end of the season at Auteuil.

Incredibly consistent hurdler over the shorter and longer distances. 3rd in the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil in 2016, he did not run in 2018 and this year he has never been out of the first three in four starts.
Unfortunately, he cast himself in his box the other week. So he couldn’t run the final prep race for the Grand Prix d’Automne. But we have a great osteopath whom I can’t thank enough, and everything is going well. He is back working and his objective will be the Grand Prix d’Automne at the beginning of November.

Has already run seven times this season.
We bought her out of a claiming race. She really likes soft ground. Unfortunately, she fell in her last race, which was the first handicap for three-year-olds. Her main objective is the big handicap for three-year-olds at the end of the season.

Owned by the Munir/Souede partnership, he hasn’t run since lifting a race over fences at Nantes at the beginning of last year.
He will make his reappearance in Pau this winter. We shall se how he goes, but his main goal will be the Grande Course de Haies de Pau. He is a horse that likes heavy ground, so we hope to get some runs into him.

Did not run at all in 2018 but has picked up where he left of in 2017 when he won both of his starts this year at Autueil.
The horse is in good form. He has had a lot of leg problems. He didn’t run for a long time but then made a very good seasonal reappearance in May. We then waited for soft ground and he recently won the Prix Ucello II over fences. We now have to see if he can run in the Prix La Haye Jousselin on 3rd November. He is a proper soft ground horse and won’t mind it if it is heavy. I will talk to his owner and the manager. He will either run the Prix La Haye Jousselin or in a listed race a week later, which would be the easier option. However, I think that the longer trip of the Jousselin and the heavy ground would suit him.

Cross-country specialist who always wins when things go right for him.
He made a successful start to the new season at Compiegne the other day. We really like this horse. He is a very good jumper and he is my next Grand Cross de Pau horse. He is in British ownership and I would also like to try and run him in Cheltenham in March. So maybe he will run the cross-country in November at Cheltenham to discover the track, run in Pau during the winter and then come back for the festival. He really is very good.

She is a very good filly. She had a little problem at Longchamp last time out but that’s now all ok. I would like her to get some black type. We haven’t talked about the winter yet, so everything is open.

A specialist of the Pau hurdles and fences, he was unbeaten in four starts during last year’s meeting.
He is the Pau specialist. He is currently in training and is working rather well. He will make his seasonal reappearance over the hurdles in December. After that he will run a listed, the Prix Renaud du Vivier and then he will run in the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau at the end of January.

He has won over hurdles, fences and the cross-country course. He will be looking at running all the cross-country races at Pau this winter. He could even come over to England one day. He still has to learn a little bit and needs to find his way, but I’m hoping he will have a good meeting in Pau.
