Francois Nicolle Stable Tour
25 Oct 2019

Francois Nicolle was crowned Champion Jumps trainer in France for the first time in 2018 and is currently looking forward to a consecutive title in 2019 (French championship decided annually), following a successful spring with his older horses and the arrival of a very nice bunch of three-year-olds.

“I have been training in the little village of St Augustin for 25 or 30 years,” laughs Nicolle, who runs his own private training centre not far from Royan, a seaside resort that lies below La Rochelle on the Atlantic side of France.

“I used to train 50 horses, but in the last few years we have doubled that number and with them came some better horses, which allowed me to go from number five or six in the trainers’ table right to the top.”

Better horses like the now-retired champion mare De Bon Coeur, who had beaten Bapaume by sixteen lengths last year in the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil and who bowed out after finishing second only to Benie Des Dieux in this year’s French Champion Hurdle.

Or horses like Alex de Larredya, winner of the Grade 1 Grand Prix d’Automne in 2017, as well as stable star Bipolaire, runner-up of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris this year, who is hoping to lift his third consecutive Grade 1 Prix la Haye Jousselin during the 48-hour jumping festival at Auteuil.

Here, Nicolle tells Liz Price of about his champions who are going to run at Auteuil over the 48 hour jumps meeting in November, his horses that will run at Pau during the winter meeting and some of his horses that he is hoping to bring across the Channel in the new year.

*The horses covered can now be added to your Tracker, which has been expanded to cover French racing.*

All Horses
A Mi Manera
Lady Fix
Great Pretender
6 bay f Great Pretender - Lady Fix
Owned by Flat trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, she has been beaten twice by her stable mate The Stomp.
Her main goal is the Grand Steeple Chase de Compiegne. She has been beaten twice by her stable companion, The Stomp, who is in the same ownership. But now the trip and the heavy ground will work in her favour. She is a very good mare. I don’t know yet what she will do after that.
Alex De Larredya
Kin D'estruval
9 bay g Crillon - Kin D'estruval
He came over to England in 2016 where he finished fourth in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. After that he took some time to come back to himself. Winner of the 2017 Grand Prix d’Automne. Has struggled a bit this year to find his form.
He came late into training this season. He is in good form at the moment. He made a good seasonal reappearance at Autueil. He will run in the Grand Prix d’Automne. Then we shall see. A lot of it will depend on how he runs in the Grand Prix d’Automne. He hasn’t run a lot. Maybe we will travel a bit this winter. The English races take a lot out of the horses though, they are not run the same way as ours.
Balkan Du Pecos
Fiesta Du Pecos
8 che g Balko - Fiesta Du Pecos
Last year’s winner of France’s most valuable handicap, the Prix du President de la Republique (French Grand National).
He won the Prix du President de la Republique last year. He is a horse I would love to run in the Grand National at Aintree. But there are a few things I need to think about first and see how they go. He has oodles of stamina and likes soft ground. I’ve had that race in mind for a very long time. We shall see, he could run a prep at Aintree, which he would need to in order to be qualified and then the Grand National, but as I said, we shall see.
Fragrant Mix
8 gre g Fragrant Mix - Kenna
Brilliant jumper who was a deserved favourite in this year's Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, a race that keeps eluding him. Excells in soft ground and is aiming for a third victory in the Prix La Haye Jousselin before having another tilt at next year's French Gold Cup.
He is the stable star. He will run the Prix la Haye Jousselin next weekend. At the moment, the horse is in fabulous form, in very good condition. He didn’t have a hard race on his last start in a hurdle race. He is in good form. After that race he will go on holiday and next year he will pursue the same programme as last year with the Grand Steeple Chase de Paris his main goal.
Cry Of Love
Never On Sunday
3 bay g Never On Sunday - Cry Of Love
A winner on his debut, he was last seen winning the Grade 3 Prox Robert Lejeune over hurdles at Auteuil.
This is a very good colt. He will run in the Prix Cambacérès – Grande Course de Haies des 3 ans. He won a nice race on his mid-season reappearance last month in a very nice manner. The ground was good that day, but I think if the ground is heavy on the day of the Cambacérès, he won’t mind. In fact, quite the opposite, it will suit him. I might have one or two others in that race, but he is very good.
Saddler Maker
4 gre g Saddler Maker - Terenice
A good hurdler last year, he has proved himself a serious contender over the fences. He won the Grade 3 Prix la Perichole and recently lifted the Grade 3 Prix Orcada over 2m6f by ten lengths.
He won very nicely at Auteuil last time out. He will run a group 1 race at Auteuil in the next few weeks. He will run against his stable mate Figuero. Both of these horses are very good. I don’t think that softer ground will matter to either of them, but I’m not sure. Which one is better of the two, I don’t know. I thought Figuero was a bit better, but the way Farnice ran I am now asking myself if I got it right.
Femme D'action
Coastal Path
4 bay f Coastal Path - Kitka
Unbeaten at Compiegne over hurdles and fences.
She is a good filly. She will run in the Group races at the end of this season. Either over the hurdles or over fences, I haven’t decided yet. But in any case, she can run in either, it doesn’t matter to her. The heavy ground will suit her. She has a lot of quality and will be win more races.
4 bay g Yeats - Annaland
Figuero beat the Guillaume Macaire trained Feu Follet by three lengths in the 2m6f Grade 3 Prix the Fellow, where stable companion Farnice finished fourth.
See trainer's comment on Farnice.
Reine Irlandaise
Doctor Dino
3 che g Doctor Dino - Reine Irlandaise
Owned by Simon Munir, he his unbeaten in two starts over hurdles this season. He has only run in the provinces and will be campaigned over the hurdles at the Compiegne racecourse.
He has run twice and won twice. His goal is the Grande Course de Haies for three-year-olds in Compiegne that was won by Polirico last year. He is a very nice colt by Doctor Dino. I like him a lot, he is a lovely horse.
3 bay g Cokoriko - Solidee
Third on his debut at Clairefontaine, he made a good impression when he was the runner-up in a hurdle race at Auteuil in October.
This is a very good horse. He ran really well last time, although he pulled like mad. I think he has a lot of talent and will be very good once he has understood what we want from him. I still need a bit of time with him.
3 bay g Cokoriko - Idy
Runner-up on his debut in Nantes.
He produced a nice performance for his first start over hurdles at Nantes. He was beaten, but he ran really well. He is a AQPS (French Half-bred). This is a horse you have to follow. He will make it big time.
Hell Boy
Queen Margot
5 bay g Martaline - Queen Margot
Hasn’t run since lifting the Prix Melinoir over hurdles at Compiegne in May.
He will run the Grande Course de Haies de Compiegne. He is very good. He had a few little problems and will only make his seasonal reappearance now, but he is good and will be ready for that race. He prefers better ground. He doesn’t like soft ground too much.
Invincible Dina
Ladies Vision
Doctor Dino
3 bay f Doctor Dino - Ladies Vision
Won a listed at Auteuil on her second start and has already been the runner-up in a Grade 2.
She will be running in Group races for fillies. We are a little delayed with her as we had a couple of problems when getting her ready for the autumn. She came back the other day to finish fourth in a listed, but I am counting on winning a Group race with her. After all, she has shown us already that she is very capable.
Jazz In Montreux
Back The Winner
Rip Van Winkle
6 bay g Rip Van Winkle - Back The Winner
A listed winner at Auteuil, where he has also been Group placed, but does particularly well at the Compiegne racecourse.
He won the Grade 3 Prix Hopper at Compiegne, which is a very good race at Compiegne, but he is a horse that we shall keep for the Pau meeting. He will go to Pau with the goal of the Grande course de Haie and the Grand steeple de Pau.
Kool Has
3 bay g Martaline - Kotkibed
A dual winner over hurdles at the beginning of the season, the Jean-Claude Rouget owned colt was stepped up in class to finish third in the Grade 2 Hurdle Prix George de Talhouet-Roy at Auteuil.
This is also a good colt. He will also run in the Prix Cambaceres. He might currently just be a little bit below the best ones, but I don’t want to give up on him. I think he will get better with age. He’ll improve.
Lady Ardilaun
Lady Scarlet
Soldier of Fortune
4 bay f Soldier of Fortune - Lady Scarlet
A listed winner and Group placed over hurdles, she recently made a successful switch to fences when she won the 2m2f Prix Sapin at Auteuil.
She has been Group placed several times and will now go for the Group races over fences open to four-year-old and five-year-old fillies and mares. She can go in any ground, even though she maybe has a slight preference for softer ground. She jumps really well and is an interesting filly to follow. She deserves to win a Group race.
Blue Bresil
4 bay f Blue Bresil - L'automne
Very talented hurdler who has won four Group races this season and recently lifted the Grade 3 Prix Pierre de Lassus by 15 lengths after taking the lead from the start.
I can see De Bon Coeur in this filly. She is tough on the opposition as she is relentless in front and just wears them down. In that last race she just blew them away. I didn’t want to run her, but she was in such good form and I was afraid if I didn’t run her here, she would be much too fresh in the Grade 1 Prix Renaud du Vivier in three weeks’ time. So, I think it was the right decision. She was more relaxed, and more fluid and we will now let her tick over nicely until the big one.
Magie Des Landes
3 b f Maresca Sorrento – Grandchampenoise
She hasn’t run yet. She is definitely earmarked for the meeting in Pau.
Affaire De Moeurs
Doctor Dino
3 bay g Doctor Dino - Affaire De Moeurs
Late start to the season. Won on his debut in the provinces and then finished third at Auteuil, where he was not beaten far.
He has only run twice. He is very impressive in the morning and I think he will improve.
3 gre g Kapgarde - Pafadas
Very experienced. Has already run six times this season, three times over hurdles and three times over fences. Won his first race on his fifth start. Made a very good impression the other day when finishing third in a listed.
This is a very consistent horse. He won not very long ago and just finished third in a listed over the fences, which is a trial for the Grande Steeple-Chase for four-year-olds. He is going the right way. He is a very good jumper and has a lot of heart. He is very brave.
Ma Nuit Chez Maud
5 gre g Poliglote - Ma Nuit Chez Maud
Extremely consistent performer over fences who is listed placed and has been in the top three of some valuable handicaps.
He was the runner-up in a very good tierce handicap. He will run in another handicap in about ten days’ time and then he could maybe go to England this winter. Nothing is decided for the moment. He is a good horse, who jumps well and has enough pace to follow. He needs long trips and lots of obstacles to jump.
4 bay g Cokoriko - Polimere
Bridesmaid on four occasions this season, including in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil – Course de Haies de Printemps des Qatres Ans, the four-year-old hurlde champion race, where he was beaten by Feu Follet, but finished ahead of the Willie Mullins trained French-Made.
He will run in the same race as l’Autonomie. At the moment, l’Autonomie has been blocking his path, but I’m not sure that it will last, as he is improving with each run. I think he is a proper horse, so they would anyway meet one day.
Poly Grandchamp
Qualia Grandchamp
7 bay g Poliglote - Qualia Grandchamp
Well beaten in last year’s Prix la Haye Jousselin, he has since won a 2m6f listed over fences, but was last time well beaten in a Grade 3 by stable companion Edgeoy.
He is going to run in the Prix la Haye Jousselin. He always runs well, but he is just below the very good horses. However, he is always in the money. He is one of the horses that might also run in Pau this winter. His goal could be the Grand Steeple-Chase de Pau. He can go in any ground and has lots of stamina.
6 bay g Martaline - Eliga
Very lightly raced. A winner of the 2m6f Grade 2 Prix Georges Courtois last year, he has only run once this season when he was well beaten by stable companion Bipolaire in a listed hurdle race in March.
For me this horse is a real champion. But he has had a few problems. He came very late into training this year. He will make his reappearance soon but unfortunately, he won’t be ready for the Prix la Haye Jousselin. He will rather run again in the Prix Georges Courtois, which is the consolation race for the Haye Jousselin. It is usually run on the last day of the Auteuil season, so end of November. The ground is heavy then, which will suit him.
Staunton Street
5 gre g Martaline - Nagaoka
Very lightly raced. Won a handicap at the end of last year over hurdles, but has only had one run this season at Compiegne.
This is a very good horse, a horse with a future. He will run in all the good races next year. I will not run him during the winter so that he can run next year. I think he could win races like the Grade 2 Prix Murat or races like that. I really like him. He can run over any distance, in any ground. The longer the better. He is a proper jumper.
The Stomp
Version Originale
9 bay g Layman - Version Originale
Currently on a winning streak. Won a listed and then a Grade 3 race at the Compiegne racecourse.
He will run mainly in Compiegne. He is a very good horse. He is very consistent and is always in the first three. He always does what you ask him to do. He rather likes better ground, he doesn’t like soft ground much. He runs over the middle distance.
