Robyn Brisland Stable Tour
21 Oct 2019

AMBITIOUS NEWARK TRAINER HAS GOOD FRIDAY PLANS

Jockey-turned-trainer Robyn Brisland has quietly assembled a strong team of 40 horses for the All-Weather at the Newark stables he moved into only last year – and has Good Friday aspirations for at least two of them.

Brisland, who cut his teeth as an apprentice with Gary Moore, plans to have the majority of his runners on the Fibresand at Southwell, just a 20-minute drive from his self-contained Danethorpe base.

But he has high hopes of ending All-Weather Championships Season 7 at Lingfield Park next Easter – a fixture he describes as “my Royal Ascot”.

“I’m very excited about what the winter may bring,” he says. “We have a lot of horses with proven form around Southwell, which will be our bread and butter, but several with the potential to progress through the ranks.”

He rode over 50 winners as a Flat jockey between 1992 and 2007 but became more interested in training than race riding during his time on the south coast with Moore.

“I was never much good as a jockey but Gary used to let me work with the two-year-olds and I loved that,” he recalls. “Seeing young horses develop gave me such a buzz.”

Brisland and his wife Jo set up a pre-training business in the Brighton area shortly after he hung up his boots and the success they enjoyed further fuelled his desire to train.

“I took care of a lot of very good horses including Group One winner Marcel and John Smith’s Cup winner King’s Warrior for Peter Chapple-Hyam. Gary (Moore) sent me a lot of his nice jumpers, too, and seeing those horses go on to big things made me want to train them in my own right.”

He accepted a job as a private trainer for David and Debbie Curran in Newmarket in 2016 and proved he had the credentials to go it alone by training two-year-old Zyzzyva to be placed in a Group Three in France before transforming sprinter Magnus Maximus into a fancied contender for the Ayr Gold Cup.

“He’d improved from a mark of 89 to 101 and was second favourite for that race after winning a big handicap at Ascot, but got cast in his box and couldn’t run. I was gutted,” he recalls.

Brisland moved to Danethorpe on the outskirts of Newark last year and hasn’t looked back from a yard where Derek Shaw and champion All-Weather trainer Mick Appleby enjoyed considerable success.

“I fell in love with the place as soon as I saw it. The facilities are fantastic. We have our own Polytrack-cum-carpet gallop, plenty of turn-out paddocks and a swimming pool, which is the cherry on the cake.

“I tend to give my horses their final pieces of work at Southwell as it’s so close to us. It’s such an advantage to take them there before we run them on the surface. The Fibresand suits a strong travelling horse. You need one with early speed who can last out its trip, and we seem to have a lot of those.”

Kieran O’Neill and apprentice Seamus Cronin will come in for the majority of the rides, but Paul Mulrennan – a good friend of Brisland’s during his days in the weighing room – will also be called upon.

Brisland knows a talented jockey when he sees one – Ryan Moore, in many people’s eyes the world’s greatest, was just a schoolboy when their paths first crossed on his father’s yard over two decades ago.

“Ryan had something about him even as a young boy. He wasn’t that keen on getting out of bed in those days but he was a real natural. The type of person who could turn their hand to anything.

“He’s never ridden for me but I’d like to think that one day, if I’m lucky enough to train a proper Group One horse, he just might for old time’s sake. We’ll just have to make sure we pick a race that Aidan (O’Brien) doesn’t have a runner in.”

Here, Brisland gives Simon Mapletoft 12 to follow for the new All-Weather season.

I haven’t had this gelding long but I’m going to give him a break now as he’s had quite a hard year. He bled at Southwell earlier this month so we’ll give him time to get over that. He’s actually a well-handicapped horse who just needs a bit of luck in running. He’s fallen the best part of a stone and a half in the handicap this year and bringing him back fresh should help him find that bit extra for his enthusiastic owners.

I bought this horse privately out of Michael Wigham’s and he could be a real stable star. He’s a hold-up horse who loves to be produced off a strong pace so he does rely on a lot of luck in running. I plan to take him back to Newcastle, where he won last winter for Michael, but I’m really keen to see how her gets on at Southwell. They go hard from the get-go there and I think he’d enjoy coming through horses.

This filly always runs her race and is tough enough to turn out at Southwell every week. Her first win for me came there at 50-1. She had worked on the track but it was last chance saloon as she hadn’t been showing us much at home. Since then she’s won twice more at Southwell over 7f and 1m and will continue to give us some fun.

Her dam Mata Hari Blue was a very speedy race mare, winning seven times over sprint trips including at Southwell for Mick Appleby. Bluella has inherited her toughness and always turns up. She doesn’t win as often as I’d like but a lot of sprinters in her grade are like that. She looked a bit of a short runner until we put a tongue-tie on her and she won in that at Southwell in August. I’d be surprised if she didn’t win again over 5f there off such a lowly mark.

He’s such a versatile horse, winning at Lingfield and three times around Southwell this year. He’s very tough and straightforward to train and is still very much on the upgrade. He stays 1m4f very well so would make a lovely jumper but I’ve resisted that temptation so far. He’s been kept fresh for a winter on the All-Weather and has a lot more to offer.

We put him in the Horses in Training Sale but I’m expecting him to come back for the winter. He won three times at Chelmsford over 1m and 1m2f and has had a break with that in mind. He’s been quite slow to come to hand and has needed a couple of runs but the more racing he has the more switched on he will be. I’m keen to run him at Southwell and half-tempted to try him over 1m3f.

I’m really hoping this fellow will be my Easter horse. He sustained a fracture and ended up having a year off. He was ready to run in June but I didn’t want to risk him on fast ground and have had no intention of running him in bottomless conditions either. He won his novice at Wolverhampton in May last year on his first start for me, beating one of Paul Cole’s that was rated 97. That was over 6f but I think he could be very effective up to 1m. Our options are open but he’s progressive from a starting mark of 82 so it would be fantastic to end up at Lingfield with him on Good Friday.

This horse went to the breeze-ups but was never the type to show up well as he was so big and backward. He’s been given a lot of time to come to himself - a typical Iffraaj - but we’re ready to kick on with him now. He has a lovely pedigree and is owned by Jackie Cornwell, whose Harbour Law won the St Leger. I expect him to do well for her this winter over staying trips.

This filly looks very well-handicapped and will be running for my new racing club. She could be a dark horse this winter in little handicaps over 11f or 1m4f around Southwell. I’m half-tempted to try her over further because I think she will stay well. She found Wolverhampton too sharp on her third run in July but she’s had a good break and is ready to go. The ever-reliable Katie Gale, who has now been retired, showed me that those races on Fibresand are not hard to win with a horse that travels and stays and Mirabelle fits the same bill.

I really like this horse. He’s one for the future. Even though he’s three now I deliberately left him for the back-end because he was a big yearling who has just grown and grown. I started him over 1m in a Southwell novice and though he ran quite well. I think he actually showed more speed than I gave him credit for. He’s by Bungle Inthejungle but there’s a lot of stamina on the dam’s side. I’ll run him over shorter and expect him to progress well.

He does have a sales entry but I’m keen to keep him as I think he’s tailor-made for the All-Weather. He’s by US-bred stallion Due Diligence, who is doing well, and had no trouble winning over 5f on his debut at Nottingham in July. He’s not overly big but is well built for sprinting on the All-Weather as he proved when second at Chelmsford last month. I’ve taken my time with him because I didn’t want to run him on unsuitable ground but I’m desperate to try him over 6f. I hope he can be competitive in those good 3yo races and make it to Good Friday Finals day. That’s my Royal Ascot.

This colt is very honest and straightforward and might have won on debut at Hamilton with a better run. He ran a lovely race around Chelmsford over 6f but improved again to win over 7f in a maiden auction at Brighton last month. He’s a half-brother to a couple of All-Weather winners and is open to a lot of improvement. With a nice opening mark in the low 70s I think he’ll come into his own over 1m this winter.
