Mick Appleby Stable Tour

NOTHING LIGHTWEIGHT ABOUT NEW-LOOK CHAMPION APPLEBY’S TITLE DEFENCE

Champion trainer Mick Appleby may be much lighter and leaner than he was this time last year – he could be a contender for a slimming award - but his prospects of winning a fourth title in seven seasons carry as much weight as ever.

Former jump jockey Appleby is well on his way to shedding a whopping four stone to ride in a charity race at Newbury in November.

His accomplishment doesn’t come as a surprise, as the steely determination that has seen him trim down from 15 stones in a few short months has served him well since his training career took off in 2012.

Appleby has been top dog three times in six seasons of the All-Weather Championships and finished second in the others to two of racing’s super powers, Mark Johnston and Charlie Appleby.

With a team of over 70 horses to go to war with this winter, the Oakham-based trainer is fully focussed on retaining his title but acknowledges how tough it might be.

“It gets harder every year but I’m as keen as ever to win it again,” says Appleby, who beat John Gosden by just one in a nail-biting Good Friday finale with a tally of 50 last season.

“The bigger yards have more strength in numbers and more quality. By contrast I have horses that are rated much lower but they are fit and well and – thanks to my team - keep on producing at their own level week in, week out.”

In a championship decided on the number of winners rather than prize money, those lower level successes are just as vital as the high-profile ones.

He is leading trainer at Southwell with well over 150 winners and has also topped a century at Wolverhampton, but sparring with racing’s big hitters in the more valuable races is a challenge he never shies away from.

Appleby might have won a couple of Listed races last winter with Big Country had it not been for his classy nemesis Wissahickon; Supersta failed by only a nose to win the valuable Lincoln Trial handicap in 2016 and old favourite Bancnuanaheireann – his mount in the charity race – landed a £50,000 handicap at Chelmsford City in 2015.

Big Country will be conspicuous by his absence this winter, however. He was being prepared for the Horses in Training Sales while fellow stable star Danzeno will be put away in readiness for another campaign in the big sprint handicaps on turf.

Riding plans will remain as familiar as the horses that keep him in the All-Weather limelight. Former champion Luke Morris and stable jockey Ali Rawlinson will ride the majority, along with his apprentice Theodore Ladd, who reduced his claim to 3lb with a polished success on sales-bound Saaheq at Southwell in mid-October.

Here, Appleby nominates Simon Mapletoft 12 horses that he hopes will help him on the way to another title.

I’ll be aiming this lad at those two-mile Fast-Track Qualifiers. He’s already proven what a good horse he is on the All-Weather with wins at Kempton and Newcastle last season and should hold his own off a mark in the low 90s. He’s a 7yo now but has improved a lot in the last year and has done well for having a short break ready for a winter campaign.

Although he hasn’t won since taking an 8.5f handicap at Wolverhampton in January, he is a very consistent horse who likes to be on the front end. He’s come back down the handicap despite a couple of near misses at Chelmsford, a track that really suits his run style. He’s been placed over 7f and 10f around there this year so he’s versatile.

This 6yo needed a break after winning over 6f at Chelmsford in the summer and is ready to go again now. He’s a nice big horse who is easy to train so I expect him to give his owners a lot of fun right through the winter. He’s blessed with a lot of speed even though there is stamina in his pedigree so he might be another who could push his way in to those better sprint handicaps from his mark in the low 90s.

This gelding has only just been sent to me for an All-Weather campaign. He won over hurdles for Dr Richard Newland after starting out with Roger Varian and I’m looking forward to running him in staying handicaps on the Polytrack or Tapeta. He started with a rating of 75 at Wolverhampton the other day on only his second All-Weather start but I think he will prove better than that.

He sustained an injury so has been given plenty of time off but he’s OK now. He showed some ability for George Baker over 7f and 1m but for me he’s all about speed. By Kodiac, he’s made for the All-Weather and will step back in trip to 6f. I’m not convinced he’s a Southwell horse but he’ll be fine around Chelmsford and Kempton – a track he ran well at for his previous yard.

It just didn’t happen for this horse last winter but I think he was desperate for a break. We ran him straight out of the sales but he’s been given plenty of time off and it’s definitely done him good. He’s enjoyed being turned out all summer but will soon be back over trips around 1m and has fallen to a mark in the 60s that sees him fairly well handicapped.

This horse is quite exciting and with a rating of 97 is on the cusp of running in those big 1m or 1m2f races. The Horse Watchers snapped him up for 20,000 gns from Owen Burrows at the July Sales and he won his first two races for us at Kempton, including the valuable London Mile Final. He ran again at Kempton earlier this month and did well to finish fourth considering he was trapped wide. He’s won over 10f around Lingfield so we know he acts on that track and I think that will be his best trip. I’d like to target the same Listed races we ran Big Country in last winter but we also have the Lincoln Trial to consider back over 8.5f in March.

He’s had a light summer so we’ll be ready to crack on with him now he’s been freshened up. Owned by Middleham Park, he has already won five times, including a Class 2 at Chelmsford in August, and handles most tracks. He is effective over 1m or 10f but I actually think the longer trip is his optimum so he’s another who could progress into those big Middle Distance races from a mark in the mid-90s.

This 3yo has come to me from William Knight and could prove quite decent. He’s a big scopey maiden who has only had 10 races and definitely needs a trip. A can see him enjoying a galloping test at Newcastle, Chelmsford or even Kempton. He’s a full brother to Sir Michael Stoute’s Group winner Zaaki and is related to All-Weather winners so he ought to be competitive off a mark of 60.

I bought this lad for £12,000 from Ascot Sales in August after he had beaten one of mine, Luna Princess, in a Leicester seller a month earlier. He was bought in for £17,000 that day so you can imagine how delighted I was to get him for that price! Still a 3yo, he won over 1m at Lingfield on the Polytrack earlier in the year. He’s a big, keen-going sort who will probably enjoy making the running on those tight tracks. I’m very keen to drop him back to 6f.

He joined me from Joseph O’Brien in the spring for £11,000 and won over 1m4f at Southwell on only his second start for us. I stepped him up in trip over the extended 2m at Southwell in September and he ran well to be second, even though he was no match for the winner. He’s still a few pounds higher than his last winning mark but I think he’s well treated and will have more to offer over those longer distances.

I bought this Zebedee gelding when he won a 6f seller at Wolverhampton for Brian Meehan on 12th October so I’m still learning about him. I noted how well he had run over 1m at Southwell previously but he just didn’t stay. He’ll have no problem going back on the Fibresand over sprint trips and is still at the right end of the handicap off a mark of 63.
