Owen Burrows Stable Tour
15 Oct 2019

OWEN BURROWS remains positive after a testing season at Kingwood Stable in Lambourn and three winners from his last six runners this fortnight suggests the tide has turned for the affable trainer.

The loss of flagbearer Laraib on the gallops was a bitter blow to the fourth season trainer but he has accrued 24 winners from a medium sized bunch of horse and still had ammunition to fire in the last month of the year.

Habub could be one of those to shine further light on Owen’s season and Elwazir has hinted that his galloping powers could bring reward shortly.

Sawwaah was another to suggest he has more fire in his belly when winning at Ascot recently and there is surely more to come from Tabdeed who impressed when making a winning appearance at Doncaster.

Owen kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hope can carry him forward this season and next.

Winner of two of his 19 starts and currently rated 97. Finished sixth, beaten two and half lengths, to War Glory in a handicap at Chelmsford (7f) in September off a mark of 99.
He ran well at Haydock when I thought he was a touch unlucky and then he went to Chelmsford where he won last year and leapt in the air and gave them five or six lengths start. They didn’t go overquick and he managed to get a position but he just weakened in the final furlong. He was predominantly sent to me as a lead horse really and whether I get another run into him this season I don’t know. He may be more valuable to stay at home and lead some two-year-old in their work.

Winner of two of his 4 starts and currently rated 88. Scored by a neck from Michele Strogoff in a handicap at Chelmsford (7f) on his reappearance in September off a mark of 83.
He came back and won on his reappearance at Chelmsford and has always been a horse we liked at home but he has had his fair share of niggles. He is rated 88 now and if we can have a good run with him he could find more races on the AW.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 105. Best effort this term when runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Fox Tai in a conditions event at Doncaster (1m 2f) in September.
He is another who for whatever reason was slow to come to hand. He ran no sort of race in the Brigadier Gerard and was keen and didn’t run as expected and then wasn’t quite right for awhile after that. I was very pleased with him up at Doncaster when he finished second to one of Andrew Balding’s that won well and I took a punt on the ground at Goodwood and I am not saying he would have won but he got absolutely flattened. For a big horse like him he didn’t have a chance to get back and I think he would have finished in the first three otherwise. He has come out of it well and I may look at the Floodlit at Kempton in November – he should be fine on the AW – and then we will finish him for the season.

Winner of four of his 14 starts and currently rated 103. Returned to form with a neck success from Medahim at Doncaster (6 1/2f) in September off a mark of 100 and followed up with a length and three quarter victory from Royal Birth in a conditions event at Kempton (6f) the following month.
He won well the other night at Kempton and there is a listed race for him at Lingfield on November 16. There’s a chance he may be going to Dubai but I haven’t actually heard yet and everything is up in the air. He was a listed winner at two and it didn’t really happen for him last year as he was one of my sick ones and he didn’t run well at all after finishing third in the Pavilion at Ascot. For whatever reason, it took an age for him to come in his coat this year and he ran well at Haydock when second to Danzeno then disappointed at Newmarket. It was good to see him get back-to-back wins at Doncaster and Kempton. He was impressive enough at Kempton the other night as they didn’t go that quick and which we were a tad concerned about, but he has always shown enough speed at home and when Jim (Crowley) asked him he soon put the race to bed.

Winner of four of his 7 starts and currently rated 99. Gained his third success of the current campaign when beating Arctic Sound three and a quarter lengths in a Conditions event at Chelmsford (1m) in October.
It was only a three-runner race but he won well at Chelmsford on his latest start. He really acts well on the AW and there is a listed race at Kempton in November which is a “win and you're in” for the AW Finals Day at Lingfield. He has come out of his Chelmsford race in good shape and is progressing nicely. He won early on over six at Lingfield and then had a bit of a blip at Newbury and wasn’t seen out for awhile after. Those few valuable handicaps he ran in made a bit of a man of him. He ran over seven but I always thought he would get a mile and he was a tad keen when winning at Chelmsford but with more runners I think he would be fine and would settle better. Hopefully, that listed race will go to plan and then we can have a little bit of a break and bring him back for Lingfield.

It was nice to see him come back at Ascot when we put the blinkers on but to be fair to the horse we have just disappointed him when we have taken him to tracks where he has to run round a bend. His best runs have been straight tracks like Newmarket and Ascot and I took a punt at Ascot over the stiff straight mile and it worked out. There is a handicap in which he finished third last year at Newmarket at the beginning of November and we will have a look at that.

Shabaaby unfortunately picked up an injury after winning at Haydock in May. He is out for the season but touch wood he will be back next year. He put up a decent effort when winning that day and he likes a bit of juice in the ground and six furlongs is his trip.

He was disappointing in the Bengough Stakes at Ascot recently and I am scratching my head a little as to why as I thought he was one of the first beat which just isn’t him. I know that Dane (O’Neill) thought it was horrible ground and he could go for the listed Westrow Stakes at Doncaster over six furlongs on the last day of the turf season. He has had an easy season and touch wood we have had a good run with him and he needs racing really.

He has been disappointing this year and ran one good race up at York. Jim (Crowley) reported at Newbury last time that he made a noise. We have had an overground scope so we are awaiting from a specialist to determine what he needs doing surgery wise. We will get on and get that done and bring him back next year. He looked progressive as a three-year-old but it just hasn’t happened for him this year.

He is a big horse, nearly 16.2 hands – and he won at Lingfield and Doncaster where there was a bit of juice in the ground and he won well. I didn’t happen for him at Ascot in that big mile and a half handicap – they didn’t go fast and he was trapped a bit wide but he wasn’t beaten far. He wasn’t quite right afterwards and is such a big horse that I am sure with another Winter on his back he will be a nice horse.

Finished fifth, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Jibaab at Wolverhampton (7f) in May on his only start.
He is a half brother to Massaat and Eqtidaar and he is another one who had been a bit sleepy in his work. We thought we would go seven at Wolverhampton but he suddenly came alive and didn’t stay seven. He is a horse who shows plenty of ability at home but unfortunately isn’t the easiest to keep sound. He’s been gelded and from what I have seen at home we could have some fun next year with him.

She ran a lovely race first time at Salisbury but has unfortunately gone the wrong way. She was disappointing last time at Beverley on ground that was probably too fast for her and was a bit jarred up after. He is in a couple of places this week. He won at Beverley on soft ground but didn’t handle it that well and I would like to try one more run for him. He is a progressive horse and has always shown me plenty at home. He is rated 83 now but he could improve again next year. He won over a mile and a quarter at Chelmsford and I would keep him at that trip on the AW and he would be fine at that trip on decent ground on the turf but it might stretch him just a bit on soft ground.

She wasn’t beaten that far but the ground probably wasn’t soft enough for her. I have the listed race over a mile and quarter for Fillies at Doncaster on November 9 in mind for her. She appreciates a bit of juice in the ground and she should get it there.

Finished fifth, beaten five and  a quarter lengths, to Melnikova on her debut at Kempton (7f) in August.
She ran at Kempton awhile back and she had been showing up nicely at home and I was a bit disappointed with her run but it turned out to be quite a nice race and she finished fifth. She picked up an injury in that race but she is a nice filly for next year.

Finished fourth, beaten seven and a half lengths, to Platinum Star on her debut at Leicester (6f) in May.
She is a filly who showed a bit of promise on her only start at Leicester and picked up an injury. All being well she will be back next year.

Winner of one of his 2 starts. Scored by a length and a quarter from Upstate New York on his debut at Nottingham (6f) in August.
He was very impressive up at Nottingham when he won and then ran on what looked similar ground at Haydock but whether he burnt himself that day or it was a bit quick after his first run we don’t know. I wouldn’t mind giving him another run. At the end of the month there is a six furlong novice at Kempton and there is also one on the turf. I would be keen to find some better ground for him on his third start so we can learn a bit more.

Finished fourth, beaten a length, to San Rafael on his debut at Wolverhampton (7f) this month.
He ran at Wolverhampton the other night first time out and showed a nice bit of promise. We will have him out again shortly in the next ten days. He really acted on the AW and could go back there.

Finished third, beaten six lengths, to Cherokee Trail on his only start at Newbury (7f) in September.
He ran a nice race at Newbury when finishing third and just took a bit time to get over that. He is back cantering and will try and give him one more run. He is a nice horse for next year and I won’t force him to get another run.

Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Miss Yoda on her only start at Kempton (1m) in August.
Zagrah picked up an injury after finishing second at Kempton so she is out for the season. That was a decent run and I am sure that she will stay a mile and a quarter. I will look forward to her coming back.

better than he showed in the Bengough Stakes at Ascot and could well put the record straight before the close of the turf season.
