John Gosden Stable Tour
17 Sep 2019

The Newmarket Gold Season was launched at Tattersalls in Newmarket on Tuesday and with 13 Group 1 winners so far this term it was the perfect stage for John Gosden to unveil some of his own plans for an ultra-busy period ahead.

Five more Group 1 races will be up for grabs at Newmarket in the next four weekends on the Rowley Mile and a race programme that is worth £4.2 million.

Gosden, who won the St Leger at Doncaster with Logician on Saturday and the Prix Vermielle on Sunday with Star Catcher is clearly on the same crest of the wave as his number one chosen jockey Frankie Dettori.

Gosden quipped: “We’ve done well but we won’t catch up with the jockey though! – we’ve being travelling an awful lot with the Yorks, Chesters, Ascots and everything in England, Ireland and France and America for the Sales.”

“So the time you come home everyone says great you’ve come home but actually it’s a tough time of year as your training horses in the morning then have the Sales – we have over 500 hundred to look at in Tattersalls Book 1 and the racing too.

“You have to look at all these yearlings and once you’ve gone through that you’ve got Arc weekend and Goffs.

“You then have all this amazing race in the middle of it and I’ve been looking forward to the Middle Park and the Cheveley Park and then you roll into Book 2 which is a fantastic sale with great depth and this is where you can find some value and some really lovely horses come out of it and everybody is there for it.”

John kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about some of his stars that could light up the autumn campaign.

5 b m Nathaniel - Concentric
Winner of 13 of her 14 starts and currently rated 128. Has won the past two running of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Has looked a good as ever this season beating Magical three quarters of a length on her reappearance in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown (1m 2f), scoring by a neck from Crystal Ocean in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot (1m 4f) in July and having two and three quarter lengths to spare over Magical in the Yorkshire Oaks at York (1m 4f) in August.
She is fine and we are very pleased with her – she cantered this morning and she enjoys her training. She just loves going out and doing something and she makes it easy on her trainer as she is so willing and positive. She is in great form and we had a lot of difficulty last year but this time it has gone a lot smoother running up to the Arc. These preparations are never easy as you are always looking for any problems, but at the moment we are happy with her. Last year they did the building at Longchamp but forget about the track but this time it’s in good nick. It’s exciting and let’s hope we can keep our nerves under control. The key thing is to keep it as natural as possible and just do what suits the horse and so far, so good.

Winner of four of his 9 starts and currently rated 110. Gained his latest success at York (1m 2 1/2f) in August when beating Johnny Drama a length and a half off a mark of 100.
The handicapper thinks he is Halling and he is a very famous case. Brent Thomson did such a brilliant job going around Windsor that he must have stopped and had a coffee with someone in a boat on the river and got him beat. I said to Frankie when we went to Ripon that you are going to have to win this race well otherwise we are not going to get into this Cambridgeshire and he was raised 18lb and he got in and won. This poor fellow has been lumped 10lb and he is going to have to try and win a Cambridgeshire as a three-year-old off 110. He may well not be there, and we might have to go to Plan B and try and win with another one so we will see. He is in at Newbury on Saturday and I think we beat a lot of overexposed rivals at York and the handicapper has overreacted - we might have to rely on a darker character to come out of the woodwork!

Winner of two of his 4 starts and currently rated 102. Having his first outing since being gelded when runner-up, beaten half a length, to Bless Him at Ascot (1m) this month.
Lord North and Star of Bengal might suddenly come into the limelight for the Cambridgeshire.

Winner of two of her 7 starts and currently rated 108. Scored by three and a half lengths from Fount in a listed event at Deauville (1m) in July but runner-up, beaten half a length, to that rival in a Group 3 over the same course and distance in August.
It didn’t quite go right in Deauville last time and the track got very rough – they had used it a lot and she wasn’t happy on it. She won in great style the time before that and we will have a look at the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes – it’s a lovely race.

Unraced.
He has done well but has done a lot of growing which is a good thing and he should be running mid-October. He is showing me he is like his mother and is going to be a horse that will develop into a three-year-old and four-year-old whereas Too Darn Hot was just one who just wanted to get on with it. Too Darn Hot had a different personality and this horse will come along very nicely and we hope to get a couple of races into him towards the end of the year and we will look to next year.

Winner of his only start at Sandown (7f) in August when beating Mascat three and three quarter lengths.
I have left him in the Dewhurst and he was very impressive when he won the other day but I just love the way the Racing Post called that horse Pinturbo! He was named after a Philippine volcano and I think if he turns up in the Dewhurst he is just going to terrify people. What better way to crown a horse that is Champion Two-Year-Old and 2000 Guineas favourite here and you might suddenly see us sneaking over the Channel (Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère) and we might go there. We could end up with a very small field in the Dewhurst but if you see a Champion that’s what it is about. Palace Pier has been fine and we always wanted to go back to Sandown as it’s track he likes so we go there again on Wednesday.

Winner of one of her 2 starts. Off the mark with a length victory from Alpen Rose at Newmarket (7f) in July.
She is another who has been left in the Fillies’ Mile. She runs at Newmarket on Saturday and she has won her second race. If she does go there she will have had three races and you need the experience for that race. The Fillies’ Mile has become a very accurate line for the Guineas and just as the Dewhurst has for the colts.
