James Fanshawe Stable Tour
10 Sep 2019

JAMES FANSHAWE has pulled off more than his fair share of masterstrokes during an illustrious career and came within an ace of doing so once again with The Tin Man in the Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday.

The hero of the 2018 Grade 1 contest had been staring at thoughts of retirement after a couple of uneventful performances but Fanshawe had his stable star at the peak of his form for a repeat and whose to know if a slight mishap when he stumbled at the start cost him at the business end as Hello Youzain held on by half a length.

Still that gives high hopes for a crack at the Champions Day Sprint at Ascot on October 19 and there are plenty more from Pegasus Stables that could be making names for themselves in the last few months of the season.

With 41 winners on the board to date it has, numerically, been a very good season for Fanshawe and his team and he kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about his string as a busy week at Doncaster ensues.

Winner of nine of his 25 starts and currently rated 114. Scored by half a length from Brando in the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock (6f) 12 months ago and ran his best race since when second, beaten half a length, to Hello Youmzain in the same race at Haydock (6f) on Saturday.
It was great to see The Tin Man back in top form at Haydock on Saturday. He had a couple of indifferent runs earlier in the year for which there were reasons. He came back stiff behind after Newbury but he was much more like him old self before Haydock and he showed that in the race. It is lovely to have him back on song and he will go for the Qipco Champions Sprint at Ascot in October where he has such a good record. He is seven now and you have to take each race as it comes but it was interesting that the second and third were both seven-year-olds at Haydock. They are the horses you need in the yard as they are real standard bearers.

Winner of two of his 24 starts and currently rated 82. Finished fifth, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Delilah Park at Kempton (7f) on Saturday off his current mark.
He belongs to Fred Archer Racing, is The Tin Man’s friend, and does all the work with him. However, he won very well at Yarmouth with young Lorenzo Atzori on him and, unfortunately having won two races in his life he was put up 8lb. He ran well when fifth at Kempton on Saturday but he is rather exposed. If we can find the right race for him and it coincides with The Tin Man’s running I am a sure he can be competitive again.

Winner of five of his 17 starts and currently rated 88. Finished runner-up, beaten a length, to Bayshore Freeway in a handicap at Chelmsford (1m 6f) in June off her current mark.
She belong to Andrew Turner who built my new yard and she is a nice filly and just had a little problem behind after her last run at Chelmsford. She is back in good form and on her day she is pretty useful. She will be running towards the end of September and has an entry in the Fillies & Mares as her owner is ambitious. If she is on song that could be possible.

He has done really well this year and won three races. He is owned by Jan and Peter Hopper and is an improving horse who is a half brother to Mazzini and from the family of Zidane and Frizzante. He has an entry at Chelmsford on Thursday and has only won over five furlongs so far but I am sure he will go well over six.

I still feel there is more to come from Sleeping Lion. He ran well at York then never really got involved in the race at York’s Ebor Festival. He is owned by Merry Fox Stud, seems in good form and has an entry in the Mallard at Doncaster on Friday or a similar race at Yarmouth next week.

He is another Fred Archer Racing and was really brave and just got up to win at Doncaster and he has gone up to 98. He is a useful gelding and we ran him over a mile and a half for the first time at Haydock last week. He ran ok behind Epaulement but the ground was just a bit too heavy for him.  He is effective from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half.

She won three in a row and she is pretty useful. A few of the horse weren’t running so well when she disappointed at York and she was a bit free and got a bit upset there but she has been going nicely and I think she is more effective with a bit of ease in the ground. She is in the Scarborough Stakes at Doncaster on Wednesday where she has a 6lb penalty but it's not a huge field and I am sure she will run well.

Winner of two of her 6 starts and currently rated 91. Scored by a length from Infanta Isabella at Goodwood (1m) in August off a mark of 87.
She is French bred and owned by Alison Swinburn. She is pretty useful and was second three times before winning an uncompetitive novice at Redcar. She was given a rated of 89 after that and she stays a mile and a quarter but had been dropped 2lb when winning a competitive Fillies Handicap at Goodwood over a mile last time out. She might go to France for a listed race a week on Wednesday at Saint-Cloud or we will look at the listed John Musker Stakes at Yarmouth.

He is well named being by Animal Kingdom and he has been running well all year. We stepped him up to a mile and a half at Ascot last Friday and he didn’t pick up like I thought he would but I still think he is a little on the weak side. I think he stays a mile and a half and I think he will get stronger as he gets older.

She is a tough filly and she has only won once but has been placed numerous times. She ran a good race last week at Lingfield in a Fillies handicap and I think there are more races in her. The ground may have been a bit quick at Lingfield and she is a nice filly of Meon Valleys.

She is owned and bred by Dr John Ryan and she is quite a late maturing filly and she appreciated being stepped up to a mile and a quarter last time. He is a nice progressive colt and he won at Nottingham over a mile and a quarter and then by five lengths at Sandown. I probably went in a bit deep after that stepping up to a mile and a half in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. He has been second in his last two runs over a mile and a quarter at Newbury and Haydock and he is a big powerful horse from whom I think there is more to come when we go over a mile and a half again. He will go for the Dubai Duty Free at Newbury a week on Saturday.

Winner of two of her 4 starts and currently rated 90. Finished third, beaten a length and a quarter, to Soudania in a listed race at Longchamp (1m 2 1/2f) this month.
She is a nice filly.  She won her first race at Doncaster very nicely and then paid the price carrying a penalty in a novice race. The ground was a bit slow when she got beaten by Owen Burrow’s Ojooba and then really bounced off the ground when winning well at Wolverhampton. She finished third in a listed at Longchamp and the main aim is to get more black type but she doesn’t want soft ground and is a very good mover. She belongs to Arthur Boyd-Rochfort and she has given him a lot of excitement.

Harry's Bar
improving sort who may well stay six furlongs and looks set for further glass raising.
3088389
Pondus
looks the sort to keep on improving with experience and a return to a mile and a half may see him get his head in front once more.
3093270
Selino
improving for a step up in trip and could excel further at two miles.
3091258
Skerryvore
off the mark on the AW at Newcastle last week and could have more to offer in that sphere.
3000893
Sleeping Lion
better than his recent effort at York would suggest and could soon be roaring to victory.
2834077
The Tin Man
showed all his old zest in the Sprint Cup at Haydock and one to keep on the right side in the Champions Day Sprint at Ascot.
