Jedd O'Keeffe Stable Tour
03 Sep 2019

JEDD O’KEEFFE has had a season that will long live in his memory as his 29 winners so far from 152 runners provides him with the healthy strike rate of 19% and he has already sailed past his personal best of 20 winner in 2017.

The prize money tally has obviously gone hand in hand with the rise in winners and the £371,493 accrued this term means the High Beck Lodge trainer has battered his previous best of £233,051 and there is still the major part of Autumn to come.

Recent recruit Marnie James marked himself down as one that would soon be winning for O’Keeffe when finishing second to Dakota Gold on his stable debut at York last month and the likes of Air Raid, Breanski, Jazeel and Rare Groove could also be adding to the total before the season’s end.

Theatro, a half sister to Lord Yeats, looks of particular interest in the three-year-old division and he also has a sprinkling of two-year-olds worthy of mention as well as the forthcoming chasing career of the mighty Sam Spinner to look forward too.

Jedd said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the ways the season has gone and it’s by a long way our best in terms of numbers and prize money. We are having a good lucky year and long may it last.”

Jedd kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about his highly successful team.

Winner of six of his 16 starts and currently rated 164 over hurdles. Best effort last season when runner-up, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Paisley Park in the Grade 1 Stayers Hurdle at Cheltenham (3m) in March.
He is back in training after having a really good Summer holiday. We are planning to send him straight over fences and let him learn his job up North before, hopefully, proving good enough to take on the big boys later in the season.

Winner of five of his 33 starts and currently rated 83 (AW) and 75 on the turf. Gained his last success at Newcastle (1m 4 1/2f) in February when beating Claire Underwood half a length.
His best form is at Newcastle and all Summer I haven’t been able to find a race there for him. He has been running on the turf and running quite well - sometimes unluckily. He may run at Hamilton this week but I have found a race for him at Newcastle later in September and that is where he will go.

He has had another cracking year and won two races. He won a race again at Doncaster in which he had been successful 12 months earlier and he will hopefully go for a race at Ascot over seven furlongs in which he also ran well in last year.

He is back in training after his Summer holiday and he is staying over hurdles. We like him a lot and we think he is improving all the time. I think he could be a smart hurdler and subsequently a nice chaser.

Winner of seven of his 33 starts and currently rated 87. Completed a hat trick when beating Arecibo half a length at Ascot (5f) in July off a mark of 80. Saw little daylight and badly hampered when unplaced, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Justanotherbottle at Sandown (5f) on Saturday off his current mark.
His best runs have been over a stiff five furlongs but had absolutely no luck at Sandown on Saturday when he was badly hampered in the closing stages. He won at Beverley, Carlisle and Ascot in July and has improved considerably after starting off the season off a mark of 78.

Winner of four of his 27 starts and currently rated 71 on the Flat and 115 over hurdles. Best most recent effort when third, beaten a length and a quarter, to Zihaam at Carlisle (1m 3f) in July off a mark of 74.
He has been frequently placed on the Flat this year and I am desperately trying to get a win out of him on the Flat before he goes back over hurdles. He is a good fun syndicate horse.

Winner of five of his 14 starts and currently rated 100 on the turf and 95 (AW). Gained his last win at Hamilton (6f) in July when beating Lake Volta a length and a quarter off a mark of 95.
Air Raid has an entry in the Ayr Gold Cup and that is probably where he will go next. We weren’t disappointed by his run in the Stewards’ Cup and we had to chance our arm there but the ground was too quick for him. That style of race on that type of track just went against him and he is suited to more give in the ground and a stiffer six furlongs. I am toying with the idea of running him at Ascot on September 7 but, without being cocky, I wouldn’t want to pick up a penalty for Ayr.

He is owned by my neighbour the former trainer Sally Hall and he started the year very well and won three on the trot. He is doing well and is frequently placed even though the handicapper has probably had his say. We will keep him to two miles and he should continue to give his owners some fun.

He is having a little bit of a break at the moment and then will come back to race and may have a Sales entry at the end of the season. He is a very nice dual purpose horse and we thought he was very unlucky in the Cumberland Plate.  He is a cracking horse to have around.

He is having a really good year and won at Sandown and ran a blinder at Goodwood. We took a chance and ran him over a mile and a half at York and he ran a strange sort of race as he appeared to stay but got outpaced in the first half of the race. He was drawn wide and we had to drop him out and I just think everything went against him. The plan was to go for the Cambridgeshire but he is also a the Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury the weekend before.

Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 99. Finished runner-up, beaten a neck, to Eddystone Rock at York (2m 1/2f) in August on latest outing. He is improving steadily and we were thrilled and also heartbroken that he was so narrowly beaten.
He is up to a mark of 99 and plans for him are a bit up in the air for the remainder of the year. He is not in the Cesarewitch - his jockey PJ McDonald thought that trip was just a step too far for him this season. The handicapper has put us up to 99 and that has made it harder to find a race and he may only race once more this year.

He ran last week at Catterick and he has had a good year but the handicapper has probably just about got his measure. We were slightly disappointed at Catterick as we dropped him back to seven furlongs and he may be better over a mile. He just missed the break a little bit and still ran respectably and we'll claim off him again next time.

She has had a good year and we really like her. She is very tough and improving all the time. I don’t actually have a target for her at the moment we just wanted to freshen her up a little. She will probably have a Sales entry at the end the season for the only reason that it is the terms of the partnership. We stepped her up to ten furlongs at Ripon and we will stick to that trip for the time being.

He ran at York’s Ebor meeting and was having his first run back since a wind operation. The ground was too quick and he was drawn wide but I was very pleased with the way he ran. It was a very competitive mile handicap and we look forward to finding a race with a little more give on the ground at a more suitable track for him.

He ran last week at Catterick and finished fourth of four but was not beaten very far and made the running. He looked the winner turning for home and for me he failed to stay the mile and a half. We will drop him back to ten furlongs and he wouldn’t want it too soft. He is another who will have a Sales entry due to the conditions of his partnership.

She is a half sister to Lord Yeats and she is definitely progressive. She has won two of her last three starts and the blip in the middle was my fault as I was trying to run her too soon to stay a step ahead of the handicapper. She won nicely at Ripon last time and the horse that she beat won her next three. She might go to Haydock on September 6.

She is a nice filly who won over five furlongs at Thirsk last time. She is getting the hang of things now and is progressive but we don’t have many options for her right now. We may look for a novice with a penalty and there is also a nursery in late September for her. We have no fancies plans for her as yet we just want to work our way up gently.

She is owned by John Dance and we like her a lot. She is showing lots of ability but we are taking our time with her and she will probably start over six furlongs.

Winner of one of her 4 starts and currently rated 71. Off the mark at Beverley (5f) in August when scoring by three quarters of a length from Bertie’s Princess.
She is in the same boat as Balancing Act and she is a nice filly who won at Beverley last time. We are looking at some novices with a penalty and also a nursery. Again, we are taking it one step at a time with her.

She is a half sister to Lord Yeats and a full sister to Theatro and she should be out in the next few weeks. We like her very much and she has shown a high level of ability. She will probably start over a mile and she could win this year but she will be a lovely three-year-old.
