Ed Vaughan Stable Tour
27 Aug 2019

ED VAUGHAN has had an August to remember with Dame Malliot flying the flag in no uncertain manner when providing the Newmarket trainer with a Group 2 success in the Prix de Pomone at Deauville.

The Machell Place trainer does extremely well with the talent given to him and as September approaches fast he will be eagerly thumbing through the entry book for a suitable Group 1 target for his progressive filly.

September also spells the return of the exciting Magic J who has been kept off games due to a niggly problem but anyone witnessing his debut at Yarmouth last Autumn would have readily pencilled him in as horse to follow.

There are several other in Vaughan’s team who should be seen in the winner’s enclosure in the coming month as well as the emergence of an interesting set of juveniles and Ed kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about his hopes for the rest of the season.

Older Horses
Desert Wind
4 b c Worthadd - Matula
Winner of four of his 12 starts and currently rated 98. Gained his last success when scoring by a length and three quarters from Big Kitten at Kempton (1m 4f) in June off a mark of 93.
I took him out at York as the ground went too quick. He ran very well over a mile and six and I couldn’t say he didn’t stay but Stevie Donohoe knows the horse well and said he just wasn’t letting himself down on Newmarket’s July course. He’s a tough little horse and he won well on his second last start at Kempton. Ideally, I think we could consider gelding him and going for an all weather campaign through the Winter as he seems to be definitely better with a consistent surface.
Seeking Solace
High Chaparral
4 b g High Chaparral - Seeking Solace
Winner of one his 5 starts and currently rated 72. Off the mark with a two length win from Contrebasse at Doncaster (1m 4f) in June off a mark of 67.
He started off in a bumper and was very unlucky not to win after going wide all the way and he only lost by a head. Since then he's been placed in his maidens and then won on his handicap debut at Doncaster. He works like a horse that is still well handicapped but last time it just didn’t happen over a mile and six at Yarmouth and I just stretched him out too far. He will perhaps make the running over a mile and a quarter or just be ridden handily over a mile and a half. He is a lovely athletic horse who works like he has plenty more in the tank and is a very sound horse who I’m sure will be attractive to the jump boys.
Three Year Olds
3 b f Australia - Hoyam
Winner of one of her two starts. Scored by a head from Jadeerah on her debut at Kempton (7f) in November and having her first run since when third, beaten a length and three quarters, to Whispering Beauty in a novice at Newmarket (1m) in July.
She was very impressive when winning on her debut at Kempton at the backend of the year. She had a little wind procedure done after her first run and when she came back at Newmarket last month the ground just turned a little bit and they were kicking the top off and she finished a very good third to Whispering Beauty. She got stuck behind a couple of inexperienced horses and Jame Doyle thought she should have won. I had her in a listed race at York but the ground turned very soft so we took her out and I think she wants good or faster ground. She just got a little bang behind so she has been out of action for a little but she will hopefully resume shortly and we might go for a novice race for her or run her in a listed race somewhere. She is a nice filly and very unexposed.
Dame Malliot
Stars In Your Eyes
Champs Elysees
3 bay f Champs Elysees - Stars In Your Eyes
Winner of three of her 4 starts and currently rated 108. Progressive filly who scored by five lengths from Spirit of Appin in a listed event at Newmarket (1m 4f) in July and followed up with a head victory from Love So Deep in the Group 2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville (1m 4 1/2f) this month.
She is a very talented filly and she won on her debut at Wolverhampton last December. She is a big filly probably 16.3 hands and she has always worked like a good filly. She blotted her copy book when beaten at Chelmsford which was probably my fault but I was trying to get a run into her before the Ribblesdale. I knew then she was that calibre and she hadn’t come to herself in the Spring and she had a wide draw and Stevie (Donohoe) was trying to get a position and she was free on the outside and it was never happening for her. She made amends for that when breaking the track record in a listed Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket and since then she has gone on won the Group 2 Prix de Pomone at Deauville on ground she hated. We got away with it and the filly that finished second to her had finished eight lengths behind her at Newmarket on fast ground. She is in a few  Group 1’s she may be in the Prix Vermeille and the Fillies race at Ascot on Champions Day and there is also a Fillies race at Longchamp over a mile and six on the day before the Arc. We also not ruling out the Park Hill at Doncaster under a penalty and she will go where we get the best ground.
Dubai Dominion
3 b c Pivotal - Hoodna
Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 98. Opened his account with a neck success from Machell Place in a novice event at Newmarket (7f) in June of last year.
He has run a couple of good races and didn’t disgrace himself in the Jersey and wasn’t beaten far in a listed race in France. We will look for a listed race from him back in France in couple of weeks time.
Love Explodes
Champs Elysees
3 b f Champs Elysees - Acquainted
No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 77. Finished sixth, beaten 15 ½ lengths, to Sweet Promise in a novice event at Doncaster (1m 2f) in June on her latest start.
I have probably jumped into the deepend with this one. She has one run and just got a lot of kickback on her debut at Chelmsford and then we ran her in the listed race at Goodwood where she travelled well and was nearly the last one of the bridle considering her inexperience. She works like a nice filly and she is in at Bath on Tuesday and she is a filly who will definitely win races. Judging on her work she is well handicapped.
Magic J
Miss Lamour
Scat Daddy
3 ch c Scat Daddy - Miss Lamour
Winner of one of his 2 starts. Impressive length and a quarter winner from Swindler at Yarmouth (6f) in September and not seen out since finishing eighth, beaten six and a quarter length, to Fox Power in a listed event at Newcastle (1m) in April.
He is a very talented horse and he works like the very good horse I believe he is. He won very well at Yarmouth on his debut. We had him in the 2000 Guineas and I put him in the Greenham to see if he would stay but it went soft and the only other option was to run in the mile race at Newcastle which proved he lacked the experience for it. He looks like a six furlong horse and he will drop back to sprinting and we will look for a novice. There is one at Newcastle on September 27 and he could go there. We had a niggle with him after his reappearance and he’s on the way back now. He would need fast ground or polytrack and his whole pedigree suggests that.
Rock The Cradle
Independent Girl
Ruler Of The World
3 ch g Ruler Of The World - Independent Girl
Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 78. Off the mark with a neck defeat of Casement at Sandown (1m) this month off a mark of 73 and solid effort at Windsor (1m) on Saturday night when runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to City Wanderer.
He is very much a work in progress and like his trainer a bit of a slow learner. He is just getting the hang of it and he is probably best of a flat track and just got away with it when winning at Sandown when hitting every undulation on the way. He ran a good race at Windsor on Saturday and he should stay further than a mile.
The Dancing Poet
Caldy Dancer
Poet's Voice
3 ch g Poet's Voice - Caldy Dancer
Winner of one of his 5 starts and currently rated 67. Off the mark with a neck defeat of Junior Rip at Chelmsford (1m 2f) last Friday off his current mark.
He has worked like a horse that is well handicapped and he just hadn’t put it altogether until winning at Chelmsford last Friday. I trained his full brother Dance And Dance and he was a grand horse and it took him five attempts to break his maiden and then he turned out a very good horse. He won a $1 million race in Canada and should have won the Royal Hunt Cup and maybe this fella has just been slow putting it together. I can’t imagine him going up too much and then we will see where we will go. He moves like a good ground horse but he’s run well each time on the all weather and we could keep him to that if the ground goes.
Two Year Olds
Faene Queen
2 b f Lemon Drop Kid - Sigurwana
She is one that came in from Malcolm Bastard’s recently and is owned by Mr Oppenheimer. She is a nice filly and I have trained two of her sisters. I just want to get her settled in a bit more and we will probably start over seven.
Little Becky
2 b f Sir Percy – Amelia May
She just got a touch of shins about five weeks ago and she is just coming back to full work. She probably won’t take much getting ready and is a filly who goes well on the polytrack. She is a sweet filly and will debut in two or three weeks.
Mira Star
Sea The Stars
2 b f Sea The Stars - Spinaminnie
Finished unplaced, beaten four lengths, to Angel of Delight at Newmarket (7f) in August.
She ran a nice race on her debut and wasn’t beaten that far over seven at Newmarket. The form has had a little boost at Yarmouth last week when the pair that finished in front of her finished first and second. She will probably go a mile and could make into a nice filly. She could go up to a mile and a quarter next year and she is a nice straightforward filly with good confirmation. She will hopefully win her maiden on her next start.
Ultra Violet
Rive Gauche
2 b f Gleneagles - Rive Gauche
Winner of one of her two starts. Impressive debut winner at Newmarket (6f) in June when beating Game And Set eight lengths and disappointed next time when unplaced to West End Girl in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket (7f) in July.
She scored by eight lengths on her debut at Newmarket and fluffed her lines on her second start when she ran in the Sweet Solera. She just hit the gates running and was upsides in one breath and just fell in a heap. It looks at home as though she wants seven furlongs but last time she was too keen so I am running her in a novice event over five at Ripon on Tuesday where she would be guaranteed to get some cover. I will then step her back up to six and more than anything she needs to learn to relax in the race.
War Cross
2 Br c War Front - Curvy
He is a lovely horse and he looks quite flashy. He should run before the end of the season and he should be worth keeping an eye on. We are very much looking forward to his three-year-old career
Wonderful Effort
Up At Last
2 b f Acclamation - Up At Last
Finished unplaced to Dear Power on her debut at Chelmsford (6f) this month.
She is a filly who was working well and is a really lovely moving filly. She is straightforward and I ran her at Chelmsford and they just took her off her feet and she never got into it. She didn’t learn as much as I would have hoped but she will be out again quite soon and we will see what she does next time.”
unexposed filly who could easily prove listed class at the very least.
Dame Malliot
classy middle distance filly who could well bag a Group 1 before the end of the season.
Desert Wind
taken out of York due to the fast ground but is a tough individual who could have more to offer on the AW.
Love Explodes
runs at Bath today (Tuesday) and could well make a bold show before progressing in handicaps.
Magic J
the stable’s budding star who could make healthy inroads in the sprint division as his career progresses.
The Dancing Poet
impressive worker who finally got his head in front at Chelmsford last Friday and there's plenty more to come.
