Yann Barberot Stable Tour
19 Aug 2019

Yann Barberot’s career as a jockey was brutally cut short 12 years ago when he suffered a heart attack after the third race at Craon. Only 35-years-old, it was a shock, but he quickly turned his life around by taking out his training licence.

Within the shortest amount of time and with the support of many owners and fellow trainers, he set up a yard at Deauville where he today looks after about 60 horses.

“I was attached to the yard of Stéphane Wattel in Deauville when I was riding,” he explains. “So, for me it was never a question of training anywhere else but Deauville. I know the whole place like the back of my hand and to be honest, in retrospect it was actually quite easy to switch from being a jockey to becoming a trainer.

Already in the winter, when Stephane Wattel sent horses to Cagnes-sur-Mer, I had looked after them, so I knew what to expect. And I was very lucky that I had straight away a lot of good horses and brilliant owners. And I really enjoy training.”

Barberot trained his first Group 1 winner in 2016 when Waikika lifted the Premio Vittorio di Capua in Italy and the trainer currently features in the top ten of the French trainers’ table.

Here, he takes Liz Price through some horses that he will saddle during the remainder of the meeting and also some that are being prepared for the re-opening of ParisLongchamp in September.

Older Horses
Diwan Senora
Kiss Senora
6 bay c Youmzain - Kiss Senora
Runs in handicaps over a mile.
He was sixth in the Grand Handicap de Deauville over a mile. He is a tough horse. He has won three Quinté races. He is running great with age and loves the fibre track. Last time he had come too early, which certainly stopped us from finishing third. There was not much between them. He will run on the 25th August on the fibre track. We shall see who runs that day, but that could be his race.
More Than This
Magic Date
6 bay g Authorized - Magic Date
Very consistent handicapper. Won a race in May in ParisLongchamp over 12f.
He won a nice handicap at ParisLongchamp in May and then had a little break. I actually sent him away to the paddock for a month and that should have done him a world of good. He is now going to make his mid-seasonal reappearance in the Grand Prix de Chateaubriand this Monday at Chateaubriand, with Pierre-Charles Boudot riding. He always runs well there, so I’m hopeful.
Vasy Sakhee
Vasy Fleur De Roy
6 bay f Sakhee - Vasy Fleur De Roy
Has been running in handicaps over the longer trips. Has not won since last year, but should be able to win another handicap soon.
She will run in the first division of the Prix Casino Barriere on 25th of August over 2 miles. This race has been her target. Last year she finished third. She is a real stayer and she likes soft ground.
Cry Baby
5 bay f Power - Monteleone
Runs mainly in mile handicaps on the fibre tracks. Came over to Lingfield at the beginning of the season.
She is one tough filly. She loves the fibre tracks. She can run over 6½f to a mile. She won a Quinté race and she actually came to Lingfield at the beginning of the year. She had a very bad draw that day that surely cost her a place or two, but she ran well to finish fourth. She has had a little break this summer and she came back to finish third in a Listed. She then was third again when carrying a lot of weight in a handicap. I think she will win a race again this winter. And she might run a Class 1 race next week, the Prix des Rouges on the 24th of August on the fibre track. I will see how big the field is going to be.
5 gre g Excelebration - Safiyna
Won the Prix Sassafras at Deauville from Mount Popa and One Foot In Heaven.
He has a lot of stamina. He won his Class 2 race the other day and will now run in Clairefontaine in the same race as Musikaline. There are really no other races for him at the moment, so they will have to run against each other.
Vienna Woods
Vienna View
5 bay f Cacique - Vienna View
Used to run over 12f but has been stepped up to 1m7f and upwards lately. She runs in Handicaps and claiming races.
She will run in the second division handicap on 25th of August at Deauville over 2 miles. I hope she will make it into that race, as she will be suited by the trip and should be well placed in the weights.
Brokeback Mountain
Le Havre
4 bay g Le Havre - Beaumont
Consistent handicapper over 12f.
He is a very late developer. He did some great things as a three-year-old but was very coltish, so we gelded him. He was a bit too keen. Today, he is proving that we made the right decision. He has improved tremendously and has already won two Quinté races. One on the day of the Prix du Jockey Club and the other last month at Clairefontaine. I think I will now run him in a Listed race at the Craon racecourse in September. He can only run right handed. I have hardly seen a horse like that.
Ficelle Du Houley
Air Chief Marshal
4 bay f Air Chief Marshal - Facilita
Has been struggling a bit this year in Listed races and handicap races.
She has some talent, but I am dropping her back in class. She is going to run in the Prix de Canapville on 24th August at Deauville. I think she should have a chance in this Class 2 race. She was a runner-up in a Group 2 race in Milan last year, but this year it’s been a bit tougher. I think next year it will be easier for her.
French Pegasus
French Fifteen
4 bay g French Fifteen - Etrangere
Runs mainly in mile handicaps.
He will run in a big handicap over 7f when ParisLongchamp opens again in September.
Natt Musik
4 bay f Martaline - Natt Musik
Ran for the first time in a Group race in May when she finished fifth in the Prix Corrida over 1m 2½f.
She is well bred. She is a half-sister to Fox Norton. She is with me as I don’t train jumpers and she will be a broodmare. I would like her to get some black type before she becomes a broodmare. She will run a Class 2 race at Clairefontaine on the 29th of August and then we shall see where she goes.
Three Year Olds
Amazing Grace
Business Class
3 gre f Makfi - Business Class
Filly with plenty of stamina.
She won her maiden and she ran third in a Class 2 race at Clairefontaine at the beginning of August. She should run again before the end of the meeting. She loves soft ground and I think she will run a Class 2 race either on the 23rd of August at Deauville or on the 24th at Saint-Malo. I haven’t decided yet. I think she could win a big handicap at the end of the season when the ground is soft.
Lili St Cyr
Penny's Picnic
3 bay f Penny's Picnic - Lili St Cyr
Has improved a lot since she left the fibre track for the turf track.
It took me a while to get her spot on for her races. The last two times she has run very well, especially in Dieppe where she was the runner-up in a Quinté race. She will now run a Quinté for fillies at Deauville on the 24th of August. It’s the Prix de Franceville over 10f. This is her trip and we have prepared her especially for this race.
Go To Hollywood
Agence Belge
Penny's Picnic
3 bay c Penny's Picnic - Agence Belge
Group 2 placed over the mile in Germany.
He is a good horse, just not quite good enough to mix with the best. He has been Listed placed twice already and ran well in Germany. In France, it is a bit more difficult. I think he will run a Listed over the mile in Toulouse at the beginning of September. He likes soft ground.
Goya Senora
Nina Senora
3 bay c Anodin - Nina Senora
Winner of a Class 1 race over 10f at Lion-D’Angers and was last seen finishing fourth in a Listed at Deauville.
He ran once as a two-year-old at the end of December when he won. He has pretty much been on the go since. He won his Class 1 race and I was maybe a little ambitious to run him in the Prix Greffulhe where he finished fourth. It was a good effort though, but I did drop him back in class. He was very unlucky last time in Deauville and with a better run, he would have won. There was only a neck, short head and nose between the first four. I really believe he will win a listed next time out. He should be even better at four.
Grey Anatomy
3 b. c Zoffany - Grey Anatomy
Third in the Group 1 Criterium International at two, he finished fourth to Persian King in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Was last seen finishing fifth when taking on his elders in the Prix Jacques le Marois.
I fell in love with him when I saw him at the Breeze-up sales and so I bought him. And what was great was that Gerard Augustin-Normand believed in him too and he now runs in his colours. He finished only a neck behind Hermosa in Chantilly last year and then he was beaten a nose in the Prix Djebel in April, otherwise he would already be a Group winner. He ran very well in the French 2,000 Guineas, but ran badly in the Prix Jean Prat where the ground was just too fast. We ran in the Jacques le Marois because it had cut up a lot and so we thought we give it a try. He finished fifth as he didn’t have the best of runs. If everything goes well now, he will run next in the Prix du Pin on Arc trial day and if that works out he will aim for the Prix de la Forêt on Arc day. He does well at Longchamp, so that is why I want to try it.
Rio de La Plata
3 bay g Rio de La Plata - Airlight
Still looking for his first victory.
He is a very late developer. He has some stamina. He won’t run during the meeting though, as he knocked himself. It’s nothing too serious, but I couldn’t run him in the race I wanted to. He will certainly run in September over 12f. Maybe he’ll go to Craon on 2nd September for a big handicap, but as I said, I’m not sure yet.
Smart Cookie
Shilly Shally
Air Chief Marshal
3 bay f Air Chief Marshal - Shilly Shally
Won her maiden on her second start in Orelans and has struggled a bit since.
She has the same profile as Plateado. She ran fifth in a handicap and I think she will win one, but maybe not in Deauville during the meeting.
Two Year Olds
2 b f Alhebayeb - Iffraja
A winner on her third start at Deauville over 6f.
She is entered in the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg at Chantilly on 31st of August or she could run in a Class 2 race the same day Chantilly. It will depend on her work. However, she won very easily over the 6f straight at Deauville last time out.
Chill Chainnigh
Ella's Honour
Wootton Bassett
2 bay c Wootton Bassett - Ella's Honour
Won his maiden on his third start. Runner-up in a Class 2 race at Vichy.
He doesn’t need a lot of time between his races. I am not quite sure yet where we will go with him, but I think he has a lot of quality.
My Love's Passion
Amber Two
2 bay f Elvstroem - Amber Two
A winner on her debut over 5f at Chantilly, she was Listed placed and then was the runner-up in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin behind the Simon Crisford trained A’Ali.
I bought her for very little money last year. I paid 10,000 Euros for her. I liked the stallion, an Australian stallion, who is not known here. I was looking for a horse with some speed who could run early. And that is what she did. She has improved tremendously. I wanted to run her during the meeting here, but she suddenly grew and I had no choice but to leave her for a bit. I think she will improve a lot from two to three, so I won’t run her again, but she is a good-looking filly and one to keep an eye on.
