Henry Candy Stable Tour
13 Aug 2019

HENRY CANDY maybe in the twilight of his training career but the sparkle still remains as he ends this season after 46 years with a training licence.

The Kingstone Warren trainer has enjoyed his fair share of success at Group 1 level with the likes of Time Charter, Master Willie and Kyllachy and the evergreen Limato and it is the last named who looks for further success in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury this Saturday.

Group success has also come for him this term with the likeable sprinter Kurious and there is plenty of untapped potential in his Lambourn stables with the once-raced Adonijah looking a colt of serious potential.

Henry has already accrued 19 winners from his 128 runners and as we enter the second half of a thrilling turf season, he kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can continue to help his fortunes prosper.

Winner of five of his 20 starts and currently rated 94. Finished fifth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Mojito at Sandown (1m) in July off his current mark.
He has had a holiday for four or five weeks and has just come back in. He looks fantastic and he would be aiming at seven furlong or a mile at Ascot in the first week in September. He has the speed for seven furlongs now even though he appears to be staying well. He definitely needs give in the ground which is why we gave him some time off.

Winner of 13 of his 29 starts and currently rated 114. Returned to winning form in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket (7f) in June when beating Glorious Journey a neck. Subsequently last of 12, beaten nine and three quarter lengths, to Ten Sovereigns in the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket (6f) in July.
It would be ground dependent but he would be aiming for the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury this weekend. If for any reason that looked unattractive he would have alternatives in the City of York Stakes on August 24 or the Supreme Stakes at Goodwood on August 25. He has been brilliant for us over the past few years and he remains as enthusiastic as ever.

Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten two and a half lengths, to Mandarin on his last start at Newmarket (1m 4f) this month off his current mark.
He is in great form at the moment. He was disappointing in the first half of the year but he has come on in each of his runs and was second at Newmarket last time. He is very prone to pulling shoes off when he goes racing and he lost both his front shoes at Newmarket last week which wouldn’t have helped on good ground. He is in very lively form at the moment and I think he will be off to Goodwood on August 24 and a little bit of cut in the ground would help him.

She ran quite well the other day at Newmarket and is a filly who definitely wants some cut in the ground. She is in at Nottingham on the 16th and hopefully the ground will stay in her favour.

She definitely needs cut in the ground and went off a bit too quick at Nottingham the other night. She didn’t finish her race but she likes to be out front and was taken on for the lead and they just went a bit too quick. She has come out of the race well and I think she will win again.

Winner of two of his 23 starts and currently rated 62 (AW) and 53 on the turf. Scored by a neck from Kennocha on his latest start at Wolverhampton (6f) in July off a mark of 60.
As his rating would indicate he is just an ordinary little sprinter but he does have fantastic speed and we are going to try him over five furlongs at Lingfield on Tuesday. When he won at Wolverhampton a couple of weeks ago he was climbing all over them and didn’t gave David Probert a happy ride so five furlongs might easily be his game now. He looks fantastic and he’s full of enthusiasm.

Winner of three of his 23 starts and currently rated 97. Returned to winning form latest start at Salisbury (1m 2f) in July when beating Time Change a neck off a mark of 94.
She seems to get more enthusiastic as time goes bye and she is in great form at the moment. It was a good performance to win under 10st at Salisbury the other day and she will very likely go back to Salisbury for the Listed Upavon Fillies race on Wednesday. She is fairly versatile regards ground now but if it is soft she doesn’t quite get a mile and a quarter.

She stays forever and she is at last growing up mentally and is a lot easier to deal with. She runs at Ffos Las on Tuesday and as long as it not extreme hard or soft she is very versatile. However, she is a good moving filly and good ground would suit her best.

He is an interesting horse and he’s big and immature which is not surprising looking at his breeding. He is starting to work well now and I would think he would be running in early September and will probably stay forever. I don’t think he was himself when he finished second at Newmarket last time as he was on edge saddling and down at the start. He is an exciting prospect for the Autumn and next year.

He’s a lovely little horse – he is small but he has a huge stride on him and he’s a real enthusiast. Everyone loves him and he would be off to Salisbury on August 14 for a mile handicap. He is getting his act together and improving and he is long striding horse who needs decent ground.

She won nicely at Yarmouth last week over nine furlongs and that’s just about as far as she wants to go. There aren’t a lot of nine furlong races about for her but the long journey to Yarmouth paid off and Harry Bentley said he would be happy going back to a mile with her and that could be her future now. She just coped with that ground which was plenty fast enough and she could do with some decent ground. She should win again.

Unfortunately after running on the firm ground at Sandown she just jarred herself up a bit and is going to need a little time. She has done nothing but improve and over five furlongs she is a pretty decent filly. It’s in the balance whether she appears again this year.

Winner of one of her 2 starts. Off the mark with a two and a half length success from The Very Moon in a novice at Salisbury (1m 2f) in May.
She is another who has had to have a bit of a Summer break. She has been a little immature and a little jointy after her win at Salisbury. She was quite impressive in a decent maiden and she has just started to work again and done well after her time off. She need to grow and thicken up and has done that. There are no plans as yet but she is one we would hope could do well during the Autumn. I think she is almost certain to get a mile and a half which will help.

No wins from 8 starts and currently rated 59. Better recent effort when third, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Lethal Laura at Chelmsford (1m) in July off a mark of 60.
She is rated 59 and that is just about what she is. She definitely wants a bit of juice in the ground and she is having a short break and she ought to win a race. She is quite genuine and has run well a good few times.

Winner of one of his 11 starts and currently rated 87 (AW) and 82 on the turf. Best recent effort when runner-up, beaten a short head, to Molivaliente at Kempton (7f) in July off a mark of 85.
He is a hard horse to weigh up after his run at Newbury. David Probert is adamant we should drop him back in trip. He looks a nice horse but has never quite got it together on the racecourse and we are not sure whether he wants six or seven furlongs. The way he raced the other day where he was hard on the bridle early on I would think a stiff five or six could be his game. We will just give him two or three weeks to regroup and then I think he will be winning races.

No wins from 7 starts and currently rated 72. Best recent effort when runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Eligible at Sandown (1m) in July off a mark of 71.
She raced too freely at Sandown last week and she was quite heavily in season. Things didn’t work out for her but she does have the ability to win a race or two.

Winner of one of her 5 starts and currently rated 69. Off the mark with a length success from Catch The Cuban at Salisbury (1m 2f) in May off a mark of 60 and finished runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Teadora De Vega at Leicester (1m 2f) at the end of July off a mark of 65.
She is a filly who is doing very well now and she was on the small side and a bit light framed but she is building up now and ran a good race when finishing second the other day. A mile and a quarter is her trip and hopefully a bit of decent ground. She is on a reasonable mark and ought to win again.

He ran a nice race first time in a handicap at Nottingham last week and definitely wants cut in the ground. He should win a race over six or seven furlongs.

She will be going to Newbury for the St Hugh’s Stakes. It may be a bit ambitious but worth a try and she has done well since her win at Sandown. She is growing and thickening all the time and quite an impressive individual for a two-year-old filly.

Finished fourth, bearen 10 ½ lengths, to Ultra Violey at Newmarket (6f) on her only start in June.
She ran at Newmarket a few weeks ago and started favourite as she had shown plenty at home. She is a nice big filly and unfortunately she suffered a hairline fracture in that race but she is sound again now and on her way back. She will run again in the Autumn and is a nice filly for next year.
