Chris Wall Stable Tour
28 Jul 2019

CHRIS WALL is a past master at cutting his coat according to his cloth and anyone with knowledge of his ways will be aware that entries made from his small team in Induna Stables in Newmarket are performed meticulously.

The quietly spoken trainer is long established as an astute placer of his horses and could well be looking at some Goodwood joy this week with the now eight-year-old First Sitting who contests the mile and a quarter Unibet Handicap on the first day.

First Sitting has slipped to a workable mark of 97 and, back over a course and distance where he has twice won the Listed Festival Stakes, hinted that he was ready for a return to winning form when finishing a respectable fourth in a decent handicap on Newmarket’s July course at the end of June. Whatever the outcome on Tuesday, Chris can be assured to find success somewhere down line and he has his team in top order at a period of the season when he invariably does well.

The rain has arrived to allow Oh It’s Saucepot to take her chance at Windsor Monday evening and similar conditions could pave the way for many of her stablemates to be back in imminent action.

Chris kindly spoke to Tony Elves about his team and their prospects for the next few months.

Older Horses
First Sitting
Aspiring Diva
8 b g Dansili - Aspiring Diva
Winner of seven of his 34 starts and currently rated 97. Finished fourth, beaten three lengths, to Setting Sail at Newmarket (1m 2f) at the end of June off a mark of 99.
He miss-fired a couple of time earlier in the season and we now know he doesn’t handle the Rowley Mile. It was disappointing when he went up to Redcar and ran no race there either but he bounced back when fourth on the July Course at Newmarket. The plan is to run him in the mile and a quarter handicap at Goodwood on Tuesday and he has a good record at that course. We hope he will do well again – he is down to 97 and at his pomp he was up to 114. He is eight-year-old now and may not be the force he was but off that mark he can prove to be competitive.
Ice Lord
Special Lady
7 gr g Verglas - Special Lady
Winner of five of his 26 starts and currently rated 94. Finished fourth, beaten two lengths, to Flavius Titus at Newmarket (6f) in April off a mark of 95.
He has been held up with a few little niggles but also he’s not really a top of the ground horse and there has been a lot of that about. He was a good fourth staying on over six furlongs at the Craven meeting and he’s a decent Sprint Handicapper. Six furlongs with a little cut in the ground is ideal and I am hopeful we can run him at Newmarket early in August just to get him back on track and then we will plan a late Summer/Autumn campaign.
Delilah Park
Sarah Park
5 b m Delegator - Sarah Park
Winner of three of her 14 starts and currently rated 76. Gained her last win at Kempton (7f) in June off a mark of 69.
She won well at Kempton and paid the price for that with a fair rise in the weights. She didn’t handle the surface at Wolverhampton on Tuesday which was poor and you can draw a line under that. I think she is better suited by seven furlongs than six and she doesn’t have to have the AW and we can try her on the turf but she wouldn’t want things to be too firm for her.
Hi Ho Silver
Silver Spell
5 gr g Camacho - Silver Spell
No wins from 12 starts and currently rated 50. Best effort this term when runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Scoffsman in a handicap at Yarmouth (1m) in May off a mark of 52.
We seem to be struggling with him a bit and we had a couple of near misses with him earlier in the season at Yarmouth but since then he hasn’t run as well and we can’t put a finger on why. We will keep going and he probably wants a bit of juice in the ground and a fast pace so he can finish off.
Oh It's Saucepot
Oh So Saucy
Sir Percy
5 b m Sir Percy - Oh So Saucy
Winner of three of his 15 starts and currently rated 77. Finished third, beaten a length and a quarter, to The Pinto Kid at Kempton (1m 3f) in June off her current mark.
She is another who is in great form at home but another who wants some juice in the ground. She saw a mile and three out well last time and anything between a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half would suit. The rain has arrived in time and she runs at Windsor on Monday and we would be looking for a good run from her.
5 b g Excelebration - Zayanida
Winner of one of his 14 starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten a length and a quarter, to Gabrial The Tiger on his latest start at Chester (7f) in July off a mark of 77.
He has been running well and is slightly handicapped by the fact that he needs to get his toe in to be seen to best effect. He ran well Chester last time where the winner just got first run on him as can happen there. He was third at Nottingham before that and seven furlongs is his optimum trip. There is a race at Newmarket this week but we will just have to wait and see.
Black Lotus
Declaration Of War
4 b f Declaration Of War - Ravensburg
Winner of three of her 12 starts and currently rated 80. Gained her last success at Doncaster (1m 2f) in May when scoring by two and a quarter lengths from Lady of Shalott off a mark of 77.
Her season got off to a good start and she won well at Doncaster second time out. Her two subsequent runs were a bit disappointing and she ran third on ground that was too firm for her back at Doncaster then ran no sort of race and ran very flat at Ripon at a time when we had some others do the same. She has had a bit of a break and we are waiting for some better ground. She is suited by a mile and a quarter and I still think there is some progression in this filly as she works at home like she is a nice filly.
Dramatic Device
Surprise Moment
4 b g Dansili - Surprise Moment
Winner of one of her 9 starts and currently rated 82. Off the mark in a novice event at Leicester (1m 2f) this month when scoring by three quarters of a length from Final Orders.
He has had a good season so far and kicked off with a fourth at Leicester, was narrowly beaten in a handicap at Newmarket and then won a novice at Leicester last time. The handicapper has left him on his mark which is handy and we will try and find a handicap for him somewhere in the none too distant future. He is best on a galloping track and doesn’t want extremes of ground.
Follow Intello
4 b g Intello - Sauvage
Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 76. Scored by a length from Contrebasse at Haydock (1m 6f) this month off a mark of 73.
He has not had a bad season and won at Newbury in the Spring and misfired at Thirsk when some of ours were not running well then bounced back at Haydock when stepped up in trip. I think he appreciates a bit of a distance and getting his toe in. Hopefully, there is a bit of progression in him.
Han Solo Berger
Lord Shanakill
4 b g Lord Shanakill - Dreamaway
Winner of two of his 16 starts and currently rated 72. Finished second, beaten half a length, to Indian Raj at  Sandown (5f) last week.
He ran at Sandown last Wednesday and he ran another cracker to finish second. We would hope we can find a race for him to win very shortly and he is suited by five furlongs. The ground doesn’t want to be too firm and as long as it’s safe ground he will be fine. I might be forced to run him again quickly this week as he is will be going up a bit more. He has a couple of options and it is not something I like to do but we might have to run him.
Jumping Cats
Pivotal Drive
Champs Elysees
4 ch g Champs Elysees - Pivotal Drive
Winner of two of his 12 starts and currently rated 78 (AW) and 76. Gained his last success when beating Remember The Man at Chelmsford (2m) in June off a mark of 70.
He is a thorough stayer who won over two miles at Chelmsford and ran well but didn’t handle the track that well on his next start at Catterick when finishing third where he had no chance with the winner. He is a thorough stayer and he might go to Kempton over two miles and he might even stay further than that if we could find the right opportunity.
The Fiddler
Big Bad Bob
4 b g Big Bad Bob - Strings
No wins from 14 races and currently rated 50. Finished second, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Make Good at Nottingham (1m 6f) in July off his current mark.
He is another stayer who is lowly rated but has put together a couple of tidy efforts this year. He finished third at Wetherby and second at Nottingham and at his level his turn isn’t too far away. We have found that a mile and six is his best trip and he doesn’t quite stay the two miles. At least he has started to show a bit of form and we just have to find the right opportunity for him.
Three Year Olds
Capla Huntress
3 gr f Sir Percy – Great White Hope
She is an unraced filly but not far off her debut. She is a backward staying type and will start off over a mile and a quarter and could end up staying a bit further.
Lucky Charm
Drift And Dream
Charm Spirit
3 b f Charm Spirit - Drift And Dream
No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 73. Best effort when finishing third, beaten a length and three quarters, to Heartwarming at Sanown (5f) in July of last year.
We have had problems with her at the stalls and she has refused to go in or got upset and she remains a bit of a project. She has the ability but trying to get everything right with her is quite tricky and I would think any ground but probably not too soft.
Meet Me Halfway
Dark Angel
3 b g Dark Angel - Meet Me Halfway
No wins from 8 starts and currently rated 59. Best effort when second, beaten three and a half lengths, to Pushmi Pullyu in a Classified race at Yarmouth (1m) in June.
Although he is by Dark Angel – he wants a step up in trip. I think he wants a mile and a quarter and we will be looking to do that next month. He is another who wants a bit of juice and if the ground is firm then we will look to the AW
Smart Samba
3 b g Intello – Brazilian Bride
He had an injury in the Spring and is just coming into work now. I would have thought like a lot of Intello’s that he will need a trip and it could be September before we are ready to go.
Bated Breath
3 br f Bated Breath - Superfonic
No wins from 8 runs and currently rated 65. Probably best effort this term when third, beaten six lengths, to Amourously at Leicester (1m) in May off a mark of 70.
She has been running consistently and didn’t run well on that bad surface at Wolverhampton last Tuesday but is better than that. Now that she is starting to settle a bit better I am stepping her up to a mile and a quarter and we will see how we go. Hopefully, we can find a race for her as she is out of a half sister to Goldikova and that would make her a valuable proposition at the paddocks.
The Corporal
3 b g Dansili - Ideal
Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 73. Off the mark on his latest start at Yarmouth (1m 2f) in July when scoring by a length and a quarter from Rock The Cradle off a mark of 68.
He has taken awhile to get the hang of things and for us to get his trip right. A mile was too sharp for him and a mile and a half was too far for him and we found a mile and a quarter was about right at Yarmouth last time. Even though it took a long time for the penny to drop, once he got the hang of it he won ok. He is a horse I think will progress with time and we will stick to a mile and a quarter for now but it was quickish at Yarmouth and he wouldn’t want it any firmer.
Walk It Talk It
Windy Britain
3 b f Nathaniel - Windy Britain
Better effort on debut at Wetherby (1m 2f) in May when fourth, beaten six and a half lengths, to Gold Stick.
She is a stayer in the making but she has to have slowish ground. She is a big filly who hits the ground hard and she ran well on her debut at Wetherby and not quite so well at Doncsaster last time but the ground had dried up on the day and was probably livelier enough for her. She will want a mile and a half or maybe further in the future.
Two Year Olds
Sewards Folly
Bated Breath
2 b f Bated Breath - Sewards Folly
She is in work and not far off a run. She is a half sister to Sayif and was a cheap purchase at the Sales so qualified for Auction races and that is where we will campaign her. She has plenty of speed and we will start her over six furlongs. She could run in about two weeks.
Double Or Bubble
2 b f Exceed And Excel – Mango Lady
She is a full sister to Mix And Mingle who I trained a few years ago. She seems a nice filly in the making and she could be out in a couple of weeks. I haven’t made my mind up whether to start her over six or seven furlongs.
Glen Esk
2 b g Kyllachy – Ski Slope
He could run at the end of the week in an Auction race at Donaster. He is a Kyllachy gelding who will run over seven furlongs but will probably end up wanting a mile. We get him started and see where we go.
Molly Shaw
Paradise Isle
2 b f Helmet - Paradise Isle
She is a Helmet filly out of Paradise Isle who did well for us. All being well she will be out in August as well.
Black Lotus
her Doncaster win earlier in the season suggests there’s a lot more to come.
First Sitting
has shown his very best form at Goodwood and appears to have slipped to a feasible mark.
Follow Intello
another who will welcome the recent rain and expect further gains his way.
Han Solo Berger
narrowly beaten in his last two starts and fancied to put the record straight at Yarmouth on Tuesday.
Ice Lord
always wins his share and can look forward to a productive late Summer/Autumn campaign after returning from niggling problems.
The Corporal
came good over a mile and a quarter at Yarmouth last time and now that the penny has dropped could well earn further stripes.
