Joseph O'Brien Stable Tour
26 Jul 2019

Joseph O’Brien has achieved more in racing at the age of 26 that most could dream of achieving in a lifetime, yet the remarkable thing is that he is only just getting started.

As a jockey he rode 30 Group 1 winners including two renewals of the Derby at Epsom before the inevitable day came where his lengthy frame made it impractical for him to make the weight required to ride on the Flat.

While he was still just 22 years old when that day came, he had already been playing a major role as a trainer under his father Aidan O’Brien’s name on the family farm in Owning, with him being given all the credit for the success of Ivanovich Gorbatov in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016.

Having been granted his own licence to train in June 2016, O’Brien has already trained multiple Group 1 winners on the Flat and Grade 1 winners over jumps. In just his second full Flat season in 2018 he finished second to in the Irish trainers’ championship and became the first Irish trainer other than Aidan O’Brien to train 100 domestic winners on the Flat in a calendar year since 1994.

The Galway Festival has been a happy hunting ground for O’Brien in his short training career, him having saddled Tigris River to win the Galway Hurdle in 2017. He has a big string to go to war with at Ballybrit next week and was good enough to sit down with Kevin Blake of and guide us through it.

All Horses
A Wave Of The Sea
Je T'adore
Born To Sea
3 b g Born To Sea - Je T'adore
Rated 83, he has won a maiden at Sligo and a handicap at Down Royal.
A Wave Of The Sea is a lovely horse that seems to be progressing well. I would be very forgiving of his last run in the Ulster Derby as he ended up getting a very wide trip from his draw. He’s much better than that. He holds an entry in the mile-and-a-half handicap for three-year-olds on Monday and could well take his chance there. I think the course and distance will suit him and I’d expect him to bounce back to form.
Arthurian Fame
4 b g Camelot - Wishing
Rated 99, he improved significantly this season to win handicaps at Naas and Leopardstown prior to finishing in mid-division in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot.
I thought he ran quite well for a long way at Royal Ascot. He was forced wide to make his challenge and looked like he might get involved before getting a bit tired late on. We’ve had the Guinness Handicap on the Friday in mind for him since then and he’s been in great form at home. The Blackrock Racing Syndicate that own him got out of Royal Ascot in one piece (!) and are very excited about being at Galway to see him. It should be great fun no matter how he runs, but I think he’s capable of running a big race.
Ash Hill
Sarah Marshall
5 b g Aizavoski - Sarah Marshall
Won a bumper at Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival and made a winning hurdling debut at Punchestown in June.
He showed a useful level of form in bumpers and I was impressed with his winning hurdling debut at Punchestown. His jumping was very good and he still looked a bit raw in front, so you’d have to be hopeful that there will be more to come from him. He’ll have entries in the Listed novice hurdle on Tuesday and the novice hurdle on Thursday. Whichever one he goes for, he should be good and competitive.
Band of Outlaws
Band of Colour
Fast Company
4 b g Fast Company - Band of Colour
A 145-rated hurdler, he has won three of his six starts over hurdles including the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Band Of Outlaws has been a great horse for us already and hopefully there will be more big days ahead for him. We’ve had the Galway Hurdle in mind for him for a while and we were happy with his return from a break when second in the Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary. He should come on from that, but the question with him is whether his jumping will hold up in what is always a really tightly-run handicap hurdle. It did just that in the Boodles at Cheltenham and he won, but he never got in a jumping rhythm on his next start at Aintree and that cost him. If he can get into a good rhythm, he should have a good chance of running well.
Royal Fizz
3 b f Acclamation - Royal Fizz
Rated 96, she won a maiden at Fairyhouse last season and has since hit the frame in multiple stakes races.
Cava has been knocking on the door in stakes company for a while and we are obviously very keen to try and win a stakes race with her. She ran another solid race over six furlongs at Naas on Wednesday and if she is in good form in the coming days, we might well let her take her chance in the Corrib Stakes on Thursday. That course and distance should suit her well and we’d be hopeful that she could run another solid race.
Cosmic Horizon
Flavia Tatiana
3 b c Excelebration - Flavia Tatiana
Rated 88, he won a maiden at Roscommon in September and has run well without winning this season.
Cosmic Horizon has been a bit slow to come to himself this season, but he seems to be running into form and produced his best effort of the year when second at Leopardstown last time. We are looking to run him in the three-year-old handicap over an extended mile on Wednesday and the stamina test that course and distance presents should suit him well. He looks handicapped to run very well if getting the rub of the green on the day.
Early Doors
Soldier of Fortune
6 b g Soldier of Fortune - Ymlaen
A 152-rated hurdler, he won the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Early Doors had a break after Cheltenham and we’ve had this meeting in mind for him for a while. He is likely to make his chasing debut in a maiden chase on Thursday. While he’ll improve from whatever he does, considering the strength of his form over hurdles, you’d have to be hopeful that he will be good and competitive.
Fine Brunello
Sweet Brune
Al Namix
4 b g Al Namix - Sweet Brune
A French import, he finished second in a Grade 2 juvenile hurdle at Cheltenham for O’Brien in November.
He has always looked more of a long-term prospect, so we were delighted to see him run as well as he did last season. He is still a maiden over hurdles, but we are looking at one of the handicap hurdles during the week to start him back.
Gardens of Babylon
4 b g Camelot - Condition
A 142-rated hurdler, he won twice over hurdles and twice finished in the frame in Grade 1 juvenile hurdles last season.
Gardens Of Babylon is an intended runner in the Galway Hurdle. He put together a very good juvenile hurdle campaign last season and maintained his form well through the season. He’ll probably end up over longer trips than this, but he has earned his place in this and we’ll give it a go. We were hoping he’d be able to make a winning return from a break in a Flat maiden at Killarney last week, but he missed the kick and it was a messy race for him thereafter. That run will hopefully put him spot on for this and hopefully he’ll acquit himself well.
King's Vow
Seven Magicians
3 b c Frankel - Seven Magicians
Rated 93, he won a handicap at Leopardstown in May prior to finishing a close second in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal.
King’s Vow has really started to improve since stepping up in trip. I thought he ran an excellent race in the Ulster Derby and while he went up 3lb for that run, I’d be hopeful that he can compete off his revised mark. He’ll run in the Guinness Handicap on Friday and while I couldn’t say with certainty that he’ll handle the track at Galway, if he does I think he’ll run a big race.
Await So
Cape Cross
6 b g Cape Cross - Await So
Rated 65 on the Flat and 108 over hurdles, he made a winning start after joining O’Brien in a handicap at Gowran Park in May. He has been placed in his two starts on the Flat since.
We’ve had Galway in mind for him for quite a while and I suspect he’ll run more than once during the week. He’ll have plenty of entries both on the Flat and over hurdles. He has shown he can be competitive on the Flat and his mark over hurdles looks fair based on his old form, so hopefully he’ll run well at least once next week.
Fame And Glory
5 b g Fame And Glory - Refinement
Made a winning debut in a bumper at Killarney and has acquitted himself very well in Graded bumpers without winning.
He ran well enough in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival, but finished a fair bit further behind Envoi Allen than he had on his previous start at Leopardstown. I think he’s better than he showed there and we are looking to run him in the winners-of-two bumper on Sunday. His form should make him a leading contender for that and I’ve been very happy with him at home of late.
3 b g Camelot - Condition
Rated 85, he won a maiden at Gowran Park in October and has run well without winning this season.
Millswyn is a gross type of horse that has just taken a few runs to get fit this season. His last two runs have been solid and he looks like one that will be suited by a mile-and-a-half at Galway. There is a three-year-old only handicap for him over that trip on Monday and that is what we have in mind for him. I think he’s capable of going close off his current mark.
3 ch f Tamayuz - Walayef
Rated 65, she failed to win in three starts for Brian Meehan and has shaped with promise in her two starts for Joseph.
Munaajaat was bought by Jack Cantillon at the February Sale and he has done a great job in putting together a big syndicate of enthusiastic young owners. I’ve been very happy with how she has settled in and I thought she ran with plenty of promise in her latest start at Galway. We’ve had Galway in mind for her for a while and the three-year-old only handicap over an extended mile on Friday is what we are aiming her at. With a bit of luck, she’s capable of running a big race.
Delicate Charm
Holy Roman Emperor
3 b c Holy Roman Emperor - Delicate Charm
Rated 98, he won a maiden and a winner’s race at Dundalk prior to finishing third in a Listed race back at that track in March. He finished fifth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot on his latest start.
We intend to run him in the Galway Mile on Tuesday. We set him a very tough task for his first-ever start on turf in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, but he ran an absolute cracker to finish fifth. He should improve from that run and while he’ll undoubtedly need plenty of luck in a race like this, his Ascot run suggests he might be capable of winning a competitive handicap like this when things fall right for him.
Potala Palace
2 b c Dansili - Sanjida
Finished second in his two starts in maidens.
He has run well in all his starts to date, but I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him on the track yet. He’ll be given entries in the nursery on Saturday and the auction maiden on Sunday and we’ll pick one closer to the time.
Lady Shakespeare
4 b c Galileo - Lady Shakespeare
Rated 86, he has won three handicaps this year.
He has progressed really well since stepping up in trip this season. While he was well put in his place by Il Paradiso at the Curragh last weekend, history might well show that he faced an impossible task against him in a handicap. We are planning on running him in the Connacht Hotel Handicap on Monday. If he gets a low draw, I think he should be well suited to the race and will hopefully acquit himself well again.
Top Moon
Spanish Moon
4 b g Spanish Moon - Courtaline
Finished second in a bumper at Naas on his debut prior to finishing third in a Listed novice hurdle at Punchestown on his hurdling debut. He most recently disappointed in a bumper at Limerick in March.
Top Moon has always worked like a nice horse and I don’t think we have seen the best of him on the track yet. He looks likely to run in the maiden hurdle on Saturday and should be capable of running a big race there.
4 b f Elzaam - Wiolante
Rated 90, she won four handicaps in a row last season and returned to winning ways in a fillies’ handicap at the Curragh in July.
Waitingfortheday got right back to her best at the Curragh last weekend and it was great to see. While it might be flying a bit high, she probably deserves to have a crack at earning black type, so we’ll give her an entry in the Corrib Stakes on Thursday and will see how she is between now and then. The stiff seven furlongs would suit her well there.
West Coast Time
7 b g Westerner - Refinement
A 123-rated hurdler, he finishing a promising second at Gowran Park on his return from an absence in February, but failed to build on that in two subsequent starts.
West Coast Time is one that we probably haven’t seen the best of over hurdles yet. He was sick after his last run at Ballinrobe in April and that is why he hasn’t been out since. He has been working well of late and will be ready to run at Galway, with a handicap hurdle on Wednesday being his target. He would really apprentice some rain, as he hasn’t had his favoured soft ground all year.
Winner Takes Itall
4 b g Nathaniel - Sinndiya
Ran well in both his starts on the Flat last season.
Winner Takes Itall is a horse that looked promising in his two runs on the Flat last season, but was just immature and needed time to grow into himself. Everyone has been patient with him and he is ready to go now. We have him entered in a novice hurdle on the Monday and while it will be a tough ask to go there on his hurdling debut, he is a promising horse and I’d be hopeful he can show plenty of promise for the future.

4 b f Dark Angel - Alina
Rated 98, she won a maiden last season and finished second in a Listed race at Musselburgh last June.
We were thrilled to get some black type with her at Musselburgh last month, as she is a half-sister to Barney Roy and has a future as a broodmare. She was a bit disappointing at Killarney last time, but dropped back to a stiff seven furlongs might suit her, so we’ll give her an entry in the Corrib Stakes on Thursday.
