Ian Williams Stable Tour
24 Jul 2019

IAN WILLIAMS is forever hitting new heights in a progressive training career and another first was achieved at Royal Ascot last month when The Grand Visir provided him with a first success at the Royal  meeting when carrying topweight to victory in the Ascot Handicap.

That horse found life a little bit harder over half a mile shorter at Newbury on Saturday but his stamina is likely to come into play in the 2m 5f handicap at Goodwood shortly and Williams in nudging along nicely with 31 winners on the board already and rapidly approaching the half million mark for the season.

The Portway trainer may be hard pressed to better his 66 winners and passing the £1 million in prize money barrier which he did for the first time last year but it certainly won’t be for the lack of trying from an astute and extremely hard working individual.

Ian kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can swell his total in the next few months.

Winner of 10 of his 57 starts and currently rated 94. Gained his last success on his reappearance at Doncaster (6f) in May when beating Wentworth Falls a neck off a mark of 92.
I was hoping to take him to the Curragh last weekend but the ground was too soft for him. He delighted us with his win at Doncaster in May and he probably had a little too much racing too quickly. He is another who has had three weeks off and he could end up slipping into the Consolation race for the Stewards Cup at Goodwood.

Winner of eight of his 54 starts and currently rated 75. Best effort this term when runner-up, beaten two and a half lengths to Angel Gabrial at Ripon (2m) in June off a mark of 74.
He has been a great little horse for all his syndicate members and has run some blinders over hurdles as well as running well on the flat. He was badly placed at Newcastle but ran on well at the finish and he hasn’t run recently due to fast ground. He could end up at Thirsk next Friday in a nice two mile event if there was some cut in the ground.

Winner of nine of his 53 starts and currently rated 83. Returned to winning from when scoring by a neck from Upstaging at Ayr (6f) last month off a mark of 79.
He has always been a reliable horse and always gets his head in front. He was probably a little unlucky not to have won more than once this Summer but did the job nicely at Ayr under Paul Hanagan. He will probably run in the consolation race for the Stewards Cup at Goodwood – a track at which he has plenty of form at in the past.

Winner of ten of his 37 starts and currently rated 104. Came closest to victory this season when runner-up, beaten a length and a half, to Soto Sizzler at Epsom (1m 4f) in June off his current mark.
What a star he has been – not only is he a 104 rated flat horse but he is a 130 rated hurdler and we will, at some stage, go novice chasing. I think he will squeeze in the Ebor off his current mark and that is the initial target for him. He ran very well at Royal Ascot from a bad draw and just slipped at Haydock which made him lose his place quickly and he actually pulled up lame. We are hoping we can get him back on target for the Ebor and he is in great form. There will be better handicapped horses in the Ebor but not many that try as hard as he does.

He did well to win over seven and a half furlongs around Chester in what was quite a competitive claimer. I am hoping that will give him a little bit of confidence as he has won off a higher mark in the past. We are just waiting for a little bit of cut in the ground for him.

Magic Circle ran very well in the Ormonde on his first start of the season and stepping up to Group 1 company at Royal Ascot last time in the Gold Cup he didn’t run as well as I hoped he would do. He’s had a short break and he will probably been seen next in the Listed mile and six at Chester in August.

He won over hurdle recently but his long term plan has been the staying race at Goodwood. His owners enjoy a day out at Goodwood and that is a great day for him to look forward too.

He has probably run his last race in the UK and I was really impressed with him last time at York and that was a suitable prep race for him to head off to Australia. He passes qualification for the Melbourne Cup and it is quite possible that he will have a prep race in Caulfield Cup over a mile and half 16 days before the big race. He will either run in the Melbourne Cup or both.

He has come to me from David Evans and he has been way out of form in recent months. I am not sure if we can find a magical solution to his loss of form but will give it a shot. If he could find his old form then he would be nicely handicapped.

He is enjoying a short break and I thought he ran a super race at York last time but couldn’t or wouldn’t let himself down on the faster ground. His run at Newcastle can have a line put through it and I am sure there will be a little more to come from Michael’s Mount before he goes back over hurdles. We will aim to campaign him towards the end of August but I would think it’s a necessity to find some cut in the ground.

He has done little wrong in defeat in his last three races. He is probably crying out for a little more cut in the ground and a little more distance. On his best form he is still nicely handicapped and I’m sure he will be winning through the Summer and Autumn before going back hurdling.

He has struggled with niggling problems for a good while and all came together last time at Windsor. Hopefully, his niggles are behind him and his form will continue to improve at a mile and two. I thought he might have benefited from a bit of cut in the ground but he coped admirably with the fast ground at Windsor under an exceptionally good ride from Adam Kirby.

He has been unfortunate not to get his head in front this season and he ran a blinder at Newmarket. He is not high enough to slip into the Ebor but probably got to a stage where he’s not badly handicapped at all. Winner of five of his 25 starts and currently rated 93. Best effort since joining the stable when third, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to stablemate The Grand Visir in the Ascot Stakes (A Handicap) at Royal Ascot (2m 4f) in June off a mark of 96.
He is probably going to be well suited by the Cesarewitch later in the season. He is a French-bred horse who is eligible for the French premiums and he could either go to Ascot for the Shergar Cup meeting or France for a small conditions race at Deauville. The ground will determine which options he takes.

Winner of one of his 15 starts and currently rated 86. Probably best effort on reappearance when runner-up, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Sextant at Ascot (1m 4f) in May off a mark of 89.
He has disappointed a little this season and I anticipated more from him after some very good form last season. He has had a little bit of time off and will come back fresh and well in the next three weeks. Physically he is a lovely individual but he hasn’t mentally strengthened to the task yet. He will at some stage but it may take a little time longer.

Winner of five of his 21 starts and currently rated 86. Gained his last win at York (1m 4f) in June when short heading Doctor Cross off a mark of 83.
He won nicely at York and wasn’t disgraced at Chester next time. He probably likes to be prominent in a smaller field and I will drop him back in trip next time. I have him in a race over a mile and two at Sandown on Friday where he should be seen to good effect.

Winner of one of his 13 starts and currently rated 79. Off the mark with a four length success from Saryshagann at Chester (1m 4 1/2f) in May off a mark of 78.
He has been unfortunate not to run closer in a couple of races since winning at Chester under a very good ride from Cameron Noble. He is off a similar mark to that which he won off and he is sure to win again when things fall right for him. He may just require a slightly more galloping track than at Chester which his owner adores.

He has progressed well this season and has won two races for us. He remains on a mark he should be capable of winning off and we will go to Newbury on Wednesday in a race that should suit.

Winner of two of his 18 starts and currently rated 86. Gained his last success when beating Pipers Note a nose at Pontefract (5f) in April off a mark of 85.
He has done well this season and just lost his form a little. He won nicely at Pontefract in April and maintained that level of form in his next two races. He’s had a short break and had some time to get himself back together and he’s likely to be hitting the track shortly. I’m sure he will be seen to good effect over six furlongs.

He won for us for the first time when stepped up to a mile and a quarter at Newbury and proved a disappointment at Haydock on Friday having missed the break and getting tied up in the sticky ground. He is better than he showed on that occasion.

Winner of three of his 14 starts and currently rated 86. Scored by four and a half lengths from General Zoff at Salisbury (1m 6f) in May off a mark of 82.
He is a horse I am very fond of and through no fault of his own he has a couple of lesser performances under his belt in his last two starts. Having ineffectively made the running at Sandown he got a little behind in a messily run race at Ascot and I am sure there is plenty to come from him when conditions drop right for him. He is on a fair mark and likely to progress forward during the Summer and the Autumn. You could see improvement when he’s stepped up to two miles.

He has progressed nicely this season and ran well in what I think was a very good race at Newmarket at the weekend. I think some of those in front may progress beyond handicap company and there are more races to be won with him.

Winner of four of his 13 starts and currently rated 72. Completed a four timer when scoring by a length and a quarter from Well Funded at Nottingham (1m 6f) on Tuesday off a mark of 66.
He has been a revelation stepped up in trip and completed a four timer at Nottingham. He has progressed well physically but is still a good way from the finished article. If the handicapper hasn’t got hold of him too hard there should still be progress to be made.

He has lost nothing in defeat but has been creeping up the weights and is another who had a lot of racing during May and June. He is enjoying a short break before coming back and we hope he can progress during the Autumn and show his true worth. I am sure he will appreciate a step up in trip at some stage.

No wins from three starts and currently rated 71. Finished fifth, beaten two lengths, to Symphony when odds-on at Chester (7 1/2f) in June when trained by Andrew Balding.
He was formerly trained by Andrew Balding and looked like a horse that would benefit from castration. That happened on his second day in the yard and if that works as it can do he is a horse who will be seen in maiden company in August. There could be a little progression in him.
