David Barron Stable Tour
15 Jul 2019

DAVID BARRON has long been respected as a trainer who knows exactly the capabilities of the horse in his care but even this astute handler has had to suffer some frustration this year as the crossbar has been rattled in some of our major handicaps.

Kynren was no match for Auxerre when beaten two and a quarter lengths in the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster but then went onto be beaten only a neck by Cape Byron in the Victoria Cup at Ascot in May and there was further high drama in the wrong direction for the Maunby trainer when Afaak held Clon Coulis in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot in June.

In his usual laid back style Barron brushes those frustrations to one side and looking forward said: “Hopefully, the season isn’t over for us yet. We have been second in the Hunt Cup, second in the Victoria Cup and second in the Lincoln and you don’t get remembered for your second!.”

The aforementioned pair will surely figure at some stage and Gunmetal (drawn on the wrong side in the Wokingham Handicap) will sure find success in a major sprint handicap before too long with Goodwood likely to be his next engagement.

David has plenty that can find their heads in front in Northern Handicap company too and kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hope can add to his 18 winners so far this term.

Winner of eight of his 46 starts and currently rated 105. Gained his last success in a listed contest at Lingfield (1m) in April when scoring by a length from Island Life.
He hasn’t been particularly on song the last couple of runs and he’s going to have a bit of a break. The first thing that springs to mind is that we could send him to Galway for the big seven furlong handicap.

Winner of six of his 24 starts and currently rated 103. Finished highly creditable sixth, beaten three lengths, to Cape Byron in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot (6f) in June off his current mark.
All being well he will run in the Stewards Cup at Goodwod. He didn’t have too much luck at Ascot – he won his own race but he was drawn on the wrong side. You would hope for a little bit of luck with the draw at Goodwood and that is the plan.

Winner of four of his 31 starts and currently rated 86. Finished third, beaten half a length, to Arecibo at Ayr (5f) last Monday off his current mark.
He needs a strongly run race and plenty of cover. He ran up at Ayr last week and ran a perfectly sound race and would have been better in there with 20 runners rather than five or six. There’s nowhere to hide and he needs dragging into the race.  We will try and find a nice five furlong handicap and hope we get plenty of runners where it can be run to suit him.

Winner of five of her 13 starts and currently rated 103. Finished runner-up, beaten a neck, to Afaak in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot (1m) off a mark of 99 and subsequently fifth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Exhort in a listed contest at Pontefract (1m) last week.
She ran a cracker in the Royal Hunt Cup and a fast run mile suits her admirably. She didn’t really get the race run to suit at Pontefract last week and suffered as a result and we will now look at the mile handicap at Goodwood. You need luck in running to win there but they do go a good pace in those races and that bring out the best in her.

Winner of one of his 21 starts and currently rated 72. Finished second, on it's last two starts, beaten half a length, to Global Spirit and three quarter of a length to Ramesses both in handicaps at Ayr (7f) on consecutive Mondays
He has been an unlucky sort of fella and he was just touched off at Ayr last Monday, and again yesterday. It looks like seven furlongs is his trip and I don’t think the ground matters to him. He is another strong travelling horse and he needs to be dragged into a race. It look like he was going to win last week at Ayr until being mugged late on and he was doing his best work late on yesterday.

Winner of three of his 14 starts and currently rated 101. Best effort this term when runner-up, beaten a neck, to Cape Byron in the Victoria Cup at Ascot (7f) in May and subsequently fifth, beaten two and a half lengths, to Afaak in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot (1m) in June.
I wasn’t 100 per cent happy with him and the ground was too fast for him in the Bunbury Cup and we had to give it a miss. There are a few options at the end of the month – the big handicap at Ascot and the mile handicap at Goodwood and also a couple of options at Galway and we will go where we get the ground. He has been tremendous and he was second in the Victoria Cup and fifth in the Royal Hunt Cup and we would like to go back there if possible.

Winner of three of her 22 starts and rated 58 (AW) and 51 on the turf. Gained her last success at Wolverhampton (7f) in May when beating Just An Idea half a length off a mark of 54.
She is just out of action at present as she had quite a busy time. We weren’t happy with her in her last run so she has had a break since then and the plan is to come back with her at the end of the year.

Winner of five of his 23 starts and currently rated 70. Winner four times this season and gained his last success when beating Little Indian a length at Haydock (1m 2 1/2f) this month off a mark of 65. Finished ninth, beaten four lengths, to Archie Perkins at York (1m 2 1/2f) on Saturday off a mark of 70.
He has never stopped improving this season and won for the fourth time this term when winning at Haydock this month. York was quite a big step up for him on Saturday and he was just found out a little but he still ran a reasonable race.

He is in good form at home and we will run him in the next week or two. We are probably going to step him up in trip and go a mile and a quarter with him. He is a horse I am sure is better with a bit of cut in the ground.

He was beaten at Wolverhampton on Tuesday and probably ran with the choke out a little bit. He suffered from the draw and was out wide and saw too much daylight and overraced. He will go for a similar sort of contest and we will be looking for a little bit of help with the draw and a bit of cover.

A mile and a quarter seems to be her trip and we ran her in a fillies handicap at Leicester the other day. We will look for a similar sort of contest nothing above that at present. She is a big strong mare and you just hope that she could be an improver.

He won at Catterick last week and I don’t think it was a great contest but he won quite well. If the handicapper doesn’t do anything silly with him then Northern mile and a half/mile and six handicaps I think he is capable of making a living.

No wins from 4 starts and currently rated 73. Has finished runner-up in four of his starts and beaten only half a length by Gold At Midnight on his handicap bow at Leicester (6f) in June off a mark of 70.
He is a big horse who really hasn’t matured yet. I think I would like to put him away even if it meant leaving him until next year. He got beaten at Leicester the other day and he looked like the winner all the way and just finished second. It is only time he needs and I have no intentions of running him at the moment.

She looks as though she is crying out for seven furlongs. The track at Catterick wouldn’t have been ideal over a sharp six and a galloping six or seven furlongs she will probably do much better.
