Richard Spencer Stable Tour
09 Jul 2019

RICHARD SPENCER would be the first to admit that the season didn’t get off to a Usain Bolt start but the catching up is underway and an across-the-card double with Magical Ride at Yarmouth and Revich at Epsom on Thursday gave the Sefton Lodge trainer plenty of encouragement that it will indeed be “A game of two halves.”

Spencer made the short transfer from Albert House Stables when Phil Cunningham signed on the dotted line for Sefton Lodge just over 12 months ago and double figures we reached for this season with Thursday’s brace.

Spencer said: “A lot of yards in Newmarket, for whatever reason, were not really hitting form and we were one of the sufferers. Since Royal Ascot  we feel we have turned the corner and the horses are running well. We have a long season left and a lot of horses that haven’t run yet. There’s a lot left to go and, hopefully, there will be some exciting times ahead.”

One of those that figure prominently in future plans is Alabama Whitman who belied her odds of 50-1 when a close fourth to Daahyeh in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and could prove a penalty kick in a novice event at Carlisle on Thursday. Stable flagbearer Keyser Soze will be looking to make his presence felt in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket on Saturday and there are several others waiting in the wings that could be worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks and months.

With his squad raring to go, Richard kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about his prospects for the season.

Winner of four of his 14 starts and currently rated 90. Finished sixth, beaten six and three quarter lengths, to Cold Stare at Haydock (6f) in June off a mark of 91.
He ran at Haydock last month and loves the mud so the ground at the moment isn’t in his favour. He is a real mudlark and his main target will be the Ayr Gold Cup at the end of the year and we will have to sit and wait for the rain to come for him.

Winner of five of his 18 starts and currently rated 105 (AW) and 102 on the turf. Gained his last success in a handicap at Newcastle (7f) in February when beating Gallipoli three quarters of a length off a mark of 101. Finished sixth, beaten six and a quarter lengths, to Safe Voyage in the Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock (7f) in June.
He had a good Winter spell when winning three races on the AW and I thought he was a little unlucky on AW Finals Day at Lingfield where nothing went right for him. He was a little below par in the John Of Gaunt at Haydock but we are planning to run him in the Bunbury Cup this week. He is in very well in himself and I am looking forward to running him. I think he is versatile between seven furlongs and a mile and he has dropped a couple of pounds in the handicap and, potentially he could run a big race.

Winner of three of his 20 starts and currently rated 88 on the flat and 127 over hurdles. Ran well on his return to flat racing when runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length, to Hulcote in a handicap at Haydock (1m 2 1/2f) in June off a mark of 85.
He has been a good servant and we have flicked it between the jumps in the Winter and he ran well at the Grand National meeting at Aintree and he was unlucky in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock. He ran well back on the Flat and the handicapper put him up 3lb for that. He wants good ground and I can seem him in those big mile and a half handicaps in the Summer before going back over hurdles in the Winter.

She’s taken a long time to win but has plenty of ability and I think her confidence has grown since her Yarmouth win. She was unlucky at Sandown on Friday where she just got beaten half a length and she can go in again soon.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 64. Scored by three and a quarter lengths from Sir Jamie in a handicap at Yarmouth (1m) at the end of June off a mark of 55 and followed up with a neck victory from Sonnet Rose at   Yarmouth (7f) last week.
He won well at Yarmouth when Adam Kirby rode him and he has been a bit of a slow learner, The penny has dropped and he had previously finished second. He won at Yarmouth again last week and will bid to complete the hat trick there on Wednesday where Sean Kirrane will claim 7lb once more. He is back over a mile and I think that should suit him better. We will see what the handicapper does with him but he shouldn’t kill him too much and we can pick up a few more races with him.

He had a good Winter campaign and ran well after a break at Chelmsford on Saturday. The seven furlongs was probably a little short for him and he will go back there over a mile in a week’s time. Hopefully, he can get his head in front again.

He came to me from Peter Bowen and has run well on both of his starts. He finished a  respectable fourth at Epsom last week and I think he will pick up a few races during the Summer before going back hurdling at the end of the year.

He has been disappointing as he showed a lot of promise last year and I think things haven’t really gone his way this year. We are going to try a few different things with him and he is going to run at Newmarket this week and a few other places. He is on a winnable mark and I would be disappointed if he wasn’t winning before too long.

Winner of two of her 7 starts and currently rated 87. Finished sixth, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Thanks Be on her reappearance in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot (1m) in June off her current mark.
She ran a very good race in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot after being off for 219 days  when finishing sixth. She is going to run in the Fillies Handicap at Newmarket and then we can see her stepping up to Pattern Class. She is a very good filly and I think she will be effective over seven furlongs and a mile.

She won her maiden at the start of the year and she is very consistent. There are a lot of handicaps to run her in during the course of the season and it would be nice to try and knick some black type with her. She goes on any ground and we could go to France with her at some stage.

Finished seventh of nine, beaten three and a half lengths, to Kurios in the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown (5f) on Saturday.
He made his reappearance over six furlongs at Royal Ascot and ran well but the ground wasn’t as quick as he would have liked. He ran in the Coral Charge and his target will be the King George V at Goodwood. He showed a lot of speed at Sandown and a fast pace and a fast run five furlongs at Goodwood will play to his strengths and we will see him in a better light.

He won two races last year and disappointed on his latest run at Lingfield but nothing went right for him. He is working well and he could potentially have an entry at the July meeting. We will go through the handicaps with him but he should win races.

No wins from 2 starts. Finished runner-up, beaten a length, to Ivatheengine on her debut at Windsor (6f) in May and improved form in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot (6f) in June when fourth, beaten three and a half lengths,  to Daahyeh.
She hadn’t done a lot before her debut at Windsor and she shaped really well to finish second to Ivatheengine. She took a massive step forward going into the Albany and I fancied her a lot given that she was still a maiden and she ran a great race to finish fourth. She could have an entry at Carlisle where all being well she can go there and win. We then have options like the Sweet Solera and there are a couple of Group races in France over seven furlongs that could suit. She is potentially a very good filly and everything she does at home she improves on and if we get her maiden out the way and then take a step back up in class.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 77. Finished runner-up, beaten three quarters of a length, to Otago at Yarmouth (6f) in June.
He is very consistent and ran in two races at Salisbury before bumping into one at Yarmouth last time. He has been given a mark of 77 and we will play it by ear when we go for a novice or jump into a nursery now. He is not just an early season type and is a nice big horse who will be better with a bit of time.

Promise in two starts and finished third, beaten eight and three quarter lengths, to Separate at Lingfield (5f) in June latest.
She ran very well on her debut at Windsor when finishing fourth and then finished third at Lingfield. She has a few entries coming up and she shouldn’t be long in winning.

Finished fourth, beaten three lengths, to Homespin at Windsor (6f) in June.
He made a pleasing debut at Windsor recently and was bumped coming out of the stalls and shuffled back further than we wanted to be. He was given a nice introduction and hopefully he will come out of the race well and go for a maiden in the next couple of weeks. He shows a lot of promise and is an exciting horse.

Finished promising fifth, beaten four lengths, to King’s Command at Newmarket (6f) in June.
He made a pleasing debut at Newmarket and he is going to run this week all being well. He could be seen in a better light stepping up to seven furlongs and he is a nice horse and one with a bright future.

No wins from 4 starts and currently rated 82. Finished 15th of 25, beaten only seven and a half lengths, to Raffle Prize in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot (5f) in June but disappointing when eighth of nine, beaten 18 lengths, to Living In The Past at Beverley (5f) on Friday.
She ran well in the Queen Mary and people might have thought we were mad in running her there but she shows a lot of potential and nothing went right in her first two runs. She disappointed at Beverley on Friday but she is better than that and, hopefully, we will see her back on track in the next two or three weeks.

He is a very nice colt who is more of a backend type and has done everything nicely so far. We are looking forward to getting him started in the second part of the year.
