Paddy Twomey Stable Tour
23 May 2019

Paddy Twomey isn’t a name that will be familiar to all followers of racing, but the fast-rising trainer is a man that has a long-established reputation as a successful trader in the bloodstock business.

Having bred the Group 1 winner Tagula at the age of just 14, Twomey went on to establish himself as a very successful pinhooker and breeze-up consignor in the 25 years that followed. He went on to breed another Group 1 winner in Serious Attitude and has had an array of Group winners through his hands over the years including the likes of San Sicharia, Prolific and Pallodio.

Twomey, who is based in Cashel, County Tipperary, first took out a restricted trainer’s licence in 2012 and caught the eye from an early stage thanks to his quite remarkable strike rates. Since having his first runner, he has run at a 26% strike rate and a 59% winners-to-runners rate on the Flat in Ireland which is a tremendous return in such a competitive jurisdiction. Even more impressive is that the vast majority of his successes have come in maidens and conditions races rather than handicaps.

Having upped his numbers significantly this year, Twomey has an excellent start to the 2019 season. This coming weekend promises to be the biggest one of his training career to date, as he is set to have runners in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Greenlands Stakes, a remarkable achievement for a yard of his size.

With just days to go until what is a huge weekend for the yard, Paddy sat down with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com to discuss his Flat team for the upcoming season.

Rated 78, he made a winning debut at Dundalk in February 2018, but was well held in his two subsequent starts that year. He has since been gelded.
He runs at the Curragh in a 0-80 handicap on Friday evening. He had an issue with a quarter crack in a foot last year and it took him a while to get over it, but he’s back now and in good form. He’s a nice horse that I’d expect to go well tomorrow and hopefully improve from it.

Rated 97, he won two of his three starts as a two-year-old for Ger Lyons included a Listed race at Navan. He missed the entire 2018 campaign and has joined Twomey.
The plan is to run him in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday. I’ve had him since the middle of last year and he’s been very good and straightforward the whole way through for me, we just ran out of time to get him to the track last year. The Greenlands looks a good starting point for him and while all his form is on soft ground, I think that was just because there was a lot of soft ground around the time he was running. I don’t foresee him having any problems with firmer ground. He looks to have a lot of speed, but he won over seven furlongs as a two-year-old, so we’ll have options going forward. He’s a lovely horse to have around the place and I was delighted to be sent him.

Rated 96, he won a maiden at the Curragh last June and made an impressive winning return to action in a winners’ race at Cork in April.
He runs in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Saturday. He’s in good form at home and we’re looking forward to it. Based on how he finished out his race at Cork last time, I’d be hopeful he’ll be fine over the mile. Every time he has run he has shown a lot of class and has beaten the likes of Lady Kaya already, so I think he has earned his chance to run in this sort of company. He’s won on good-to-firm ground, so the surface shouldn’t be an issue. He didn’t run again after his maiden last year as we wanted to give him time as he was growing and developing.

Made a winning debut in a five-furlong maiden at Navan in May.
We were very happy with him going to Navan and we thought the stiff finish would play to his strengths. He did what we hoped he would do, and it was a good way to start his career. He shouldn’t have any problem stepping up to six or seven furlongs. He’s probably go for a winners’ race next, but we’ll wait until he tells us he’s ready before we go looking for his next race.

Rated 102, she won a maiden at the Curragh last season and a winner’s race at Killarney in May as well as running well without winning in Group and Listed company.
She runs in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on Sunday. We started her back in the Athasi Stakes at the Curragh and we went there thinking she’d need the run, as she very much needed her first run last year and she’s just that type that will always tighten from her first run. She took a big blow inside the final furlong that day on yielding ground which she wouldn’t really like. When the ground stayed on the good side at Killarney, we decided to let her take her chance in a winner’s race and she duly scooted up down there. She has been in among plenty of those good fillies like Hermosa and Iridessa already last year, so I wouldn’t be worried about stepping her back into that company again on Sunday.

Made a winning debut in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden at Cork in May.
She’s a lovely big filly that Charles and Noel O’Callaghan sent to me as a yearling. She has always shown herself to be a classy filly. She’s by Kodiac, but she’s out of a mare by Shantou that won the Prix Vermille as a four-year-old and has produced a couple of stakes winners over middle-distance and staying trips. She’s a lovely, long-striding filly and she did what we hoped she’d do when making a winning debut at Cork. All of mine would be a bit green on their first start, so it was a very pleasant surprise to me to see her put her head down and go through a gap that was barely there. The fact that she did that and galloped through the line with her ears pricked was very encouraging. We are looking forward to stepping her up to stakes company later this season. A mile-and-a-quarter will suit her well and she should be versatile with regards to ground.

Made a promising debut when fourth in a seven-furlong maiden at Gowran Park in April.
I was very happy with her debut effort at Gowran Park. She was just ready to start, was drawn out in stall 16 and fell out of the gates. It was a strong contest for the type of race it was, the winner, second, third and fifth all won their next starts. She has come out of the race very well and has got very strong since. We’ll look to run her back in a fillies’ maiden around a mile in the next few weeks. She should have no problem winning a maiden and we’ll see how she progresses after that. She will appreciate an ease in the ground and we might just wait for that until we go again with her.

Has finished second in maidens at Leopardstown and Limerick in her two starts to date.
I was very happy with her debut run. She was just ready to start and showed plenty of promise to finish second at Leopardstown. Hamariyna who was just behind her there has since won a Group 3 at Leopardstown. She went to Limerick after that and ran another very good race behind a filly that has gone on to be second in that same Group 3 at Leopardstown, but unfortunately she picked up a little setback in that race. It’s likely to be the second half of the season until she is back at the races, but she’ll hopefully be worth the wait.

Made a promising debut when third in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden at Cork in May.
He made a pleasing debut at Cork. Typical of one of mine, he wasn’t the sharpest away and showed greenness, but I was pleased with the way he travelled. Considering he didn’t have an ideal trip through the race, I was pleased with the run. He’s a horse with ability and we’re looking forward to him.

Made it second-time lucky when running out the impressive winner of a six-furlong maiden at the Curragh in May.
Typically for one of mine, he needed the experience on debut and ran a nice race behind Monarch Of Egypt at Naas. He came on well from that and did what we hoped he would when winning impressively at the Curragh. The plan is to go to Royal Ascot with him. I wouldn’t be against dropped him back to five furlongs, so he’ll have plenty of options there. He could potentially run in a median auction winners-of-one race at Tipperary on June 4th before Ascot, but we’ll wait and see.
