Charlie Fellowes Stable Tour
21 May 2019

There wasn’t quite the dream start that Charlie Fellowes would have hoped for when his first runner from Bedford House, Cavalry Park, finished unplaced at Salisbury last Thursday but that situation was redressed later in the day when Carnwennan won the closing two mile handicap at York and I Am Magical added another touch of gloss just over five minutes later at Newmarket’s evening fixture.

Fellowes took charge of the historic Newmarket yard which was home to Derby winners Kahyasi and High-Rise in the middle of last month and has already shown he possesses similar traits to his globetrotting predecessor Luca Cumani with Prince Of Arran putting his name on the world map when landing the Lexus Stakes at Flemington last November.

Prince of Arran will be one of those doing battle once more this term, with Australia on his schedule again, and with 11 winners already from 82 runners the season looks likely to confirm Fellowes position as one of our progressive young handler.

Charlie said: “It is a great yard and the horse have settled in very well. They are happy here and hopefully we can look forward to plenty of success from our new base.”

Charlie kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can do well for him from his Bedford House stables.

Winner of five of his 32 races and currently rated 111. Better effort this season when fourth, beaten three and a half lengths, to Old Persian in the Group 2 Dubai City Of Gold at Meydan (1m 4f) in March.
He is in great form and he came back to the yard last week having had a break after Dubai where he was clearly below his best on World Cup night. The plan is to go for the Ebor which is now worth a £1 million and then it will be down to Australia. Whether he takes in a race before the Ebor we will see but we are in no rush with him. He looks an absolute picture and let’s hope he has put his disappointing run in the Dubai Gold Cup behind him.

Winner of two of his 16 starts and currently rated 85. Best most recent effort when finishing second, beaten three quarters of a length, to Lion Hearted at Chelmsford (1m) in April off a mark of 86.
He got too far behind in the Thirsk Hunt Cup last time out and on ground that was probably too quick for him. I have entered him in the Whitsun Cup at Sandown and if we were to get some rain that would be a good race for him. He will like Sandown and hopefully there will be some cut in the ground. I am really keen to get him going again on grass as I can’t seen any reason for him not to go on it even though he hasn't run on it that often.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 58. Finishes seventh of 10, beaten five and a half lengths, to Stoney Lane in a novice event at Wetherby (7f) this month on his debut for the stable.
She ran at Wetherby the other day and I thought she ran well. We gave her a nice educational run over seven furlongs and it was really to find what her trip will be and Steve (Donohoe) said step her up in trip and she could be well handicapped. She has a mark of 58 from which she should be more than competitive off.

He won really nicely at Thirsk on a track which doesn’t suit hold up horses. He ran at Newbury on Friday but the ground was plenty quick enough and he wasn’t helped by the draw. He looks a happier horse this year and doesn’t look badly treated.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 79. Returned to form when scoring by a length and a half from Mancini in a handicap at York (2m 1/2f) on Thursday off his current mark.
He won nicely at York last Thursday and is a really progressive stayer with a lovely temperament. He is very laid back and is an easy horse to train and he has been very consistent since going handicapping. I would like to think he will improve again and he will get further than two miles. I would like to think he would be a horse for the Ascot Stakes (Handicap) if he got in and the Cesarewitch or something like that further down the line.

Made a winning debut at Chelmsford (1m 2f) this month when beating Kodiac Harbour a length and three quarters.
He won impressively the other day first time out at Chelmsford. The problem is that there are no more novice races just for older horses and we have a choice of running in three-year-old plus novices where he would be carrying loads of weight or a four-year-olds and upwards listed race at Goodwood on Saturday. We might put him in there and have a look at it and make a call further down the line. I think he is a nice horse and he is a big leggy sort and it is no surprise that he didn’t run until now. He clearly has an engine and if he continues to progress then he will make a nice horse.

Winner of one of her 5 starts and currently rated 76. Having first run in over 16 months when last of seven, beaten 16 lengths, to Juanito Chico at Nottingham (1m 1/2f) in April off a mark of 79.
She ran well for a long way at Nottingham the other day and was having her first run in a long time. She had a real niggle as a three-year-old and never really got over it and I think she has more speed than we give her credit for and I may drop her back to seven or even six furlongs. She is a lovely big powerful filly and I would be disappointed if she doesn’t progress this year. Her work has been good and she has a lovely attitude.

She nearly pulled off a shock in a listed race at Nottingham the other day and was caught on the line. She is a very nice filly and I have always thought a lot of her but even I probably didn't think she would do that the other day. The key to that performance was soft ground and she really loved it. She is quick and hopefully she can get some winning black type somewhere down the line.

He was a bit disappointing last week at Salisbury but he hasn’t come in his coat and still looked very wintry. He should improve for the run and six furlong on quick ground should be ideal for him. We will chip away and I will be really disappointed if he can't be competitive off his mark.

He got punished for running well in a listed race in France last year and as a result he started the season on 89. He ran ok at Chester on bottomless ground where he was never really travelling and got too far back and the handicapper has dropped him 3lb. He does want a bit of cut and he could well stay further than a mile and a half in time.

Winner of one of her 5 starts and currently rated 76. Off the mark with a length success from Al Messila in a handicap at Newmarket (1m) this month off her current mark.
She ran a lovely race at Newmarket last week. She got stuck behind a wall of horses and never got out until inside the final furlong but still got up and won. I thought she was quite smart before that race and I now think she is pretty decent. I do have her entered this week and there is a very small chance I might run her again. I don’t think she had much of a race and I have half an eye on the Sandringham at Royal Ascot which would suit her. She is a really good looking big strong filly and I would be hopeful she will pick up some black type somewhere along the line this year.

She had done her job really well and won her race at Wolverhampton earlier in the year. I think she was disappointing over two far at Nottingham next time on ground that was too soft. She will drop back in trip on a sounder surface and she is very tough and has a lovely attitude. She hasn’t got much in hand over the handicapper but has a very likeable running style which will help her.

Winner of one of his 4 starts and currently rated 73. Disappointing in three runs for stable and finished tenth, beaten 15 ½ lengths, to Cardano in a handicap at Notttingham (1m 1/2f) this month off a mark of 75.
He has been a bit disappointing for me. He won first time out for Mick Easterby and ran two solid race in novice under a penalty without looking anything special. He was real dopey and switched off when he arrived and he was 80-1 when he won first time so it probably wasn’t expected. He is just starting to turn a corner and look like a racehorse and his whole demeanour has changed slightly. He ran poorly on soft ground the other day but apparently hated the ground and I might look to drop to seven furlongs again now he is a bit more switched on. I hope he won’t be far off winning races.

He won impressively first time out at Newbury this year before not getting home behind Sir Dragonet in the Chester Vase. He travelled great that day and if anything a little too well on horrible ground. It was a proper stamina test and he just didn’t get home and we will drop back to ten furlongs with him and I am sure he wants better ground. There is a Group 3 at Royal Ascot for him if the ground doesn’t get too quick and another in France at Maisons-Laffitte about ten days after Ascot.

He doesn't seems to be facing the visors recently and I am going to take all of the headgear off and start again and see if that helps him out. His work at home is better than he is showing at the racetrack.

Unplaced, beaten 11 lengths, to Geizy Teizy on his debut in a novice auction event at Windsor (1m 2f) in May.
He ran a nice race first time out at Windsor the other day where he stayed on from the back of the field. He wants soft ground and he will be a nice stayer next year so we are going to take our time with him.

No wins from 3 starts and currently rated 74. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Jubiloso in a novice event at Chelmsford (6f) in April on her reappearance.
She behaved appallingly first time out and pulled like a train and then second time out it was much more like it at six furlongs. She settled down nicely into a lovely rhythm. She might go to Wolverhampton in a week’s time for a Fillies race over seven furlongs. I would be disappointed if she doesn’t progress through the grades.

He is a lovely big stayer and he is not far off being ready to run. He wants a mile and a quarter and is a really good looking horse. He is going to be a really nice stayer in time.

No wins from 5 starts and currently rated 66. Finished eighth, beaten eight and a quarter lengths, to Love So Deep on his stable debut at Yarmouth (1m 2f) in April off a mark of 68.
He ran ok first time out at Yarmouth where they crawled and it turned into a sprint. That wouldn’t have suited him and he will get further than a mile and a quarter. He might be better with a bit of cut in the ground and should have wins in him.

Unplaced in a maiden at Newbury (7f) in April and a novice event at Salisbury (7f) in May.
She is a lovely filly and she would have almost won at Newbury in April had she jumped out straight. Then she got really gassy and keen on the way to post at Salisbury last time and blew the race before it started. She still ran well from an awful draw and we will change our tactics and take her down steady and nice and early and keep a lid on her. She has got to learn to race properly but she is a big scopey filly and I like her a lot.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 74. Gained his latest success at Salisbury (1m 2f) in April when short heading Htilminto off a mark of 69.
He has done well and won his last two on ground that I actually think is not ideal for him. I think he will be better with cut in the ground and I think a mile and quarter is his trip. I can’t see why he can’t continue to win.

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 67. Beaten a short head by Spirit of May at Chelmsford (6f) in April when bidding to complete a hat trick off a mark of 62.
Pentland Lad has won two from six this year and at the moment all his winning has been on the AW but he is just as good on turf. I ran him at Windsor last time under a penalty and I think it was all a bit too soon and he had too many races in a short space of time and the ground was probably a bit quick as well. I have given him an easy time recently and he did his first bit of work back last week. We will find a race for him and he definitely has more wins in him.

She ran ok from a poor draw at Nottingham last time and a mile and a quarter is no problem to her. She wants a bit of cut in the ground and she needs everything to go her way as she doesn’t have much in hand from the handicapper.

He worked really nicely last week and is ready to run and I expect him to improve significantly for his first run. He is going to be like a rabbit in the headlights as he is quite laidback but he could be ok.

Finished unplaced, beaten 16 ½ lengths, to Far Above in a maiden at Newmarket (7f) in April.
He is a good looking son of New Approach and a full brother to a Group 1 winner. He got very colty at Newmarket and misbehaved so we gelded him. It was too short and the ground was too quick at Newmarket and we will step him up to a mile and a quarter with some cut in the ground. I think you will see a completely different horse and he will be a nice horse in time.

No wins from 3 runs and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten a short head, to Search For Light in a novice event at Haydock (1m) in April on her reappearance.
She ran a lovely race and was bit unlucky not to win on her reappearance at Haydock and we nearly thought about appealing. The Godolphin filly bumped her a couple of times in the last furlong. She is a quirky breeze-up filly and she was suited by the step up to a mile and I think she will get further. She runs at Nottingham on Tuesday and we want to get a win into her.

Winner of one of his 8 races and currently rated 93. Finished third, beaten five and a half lengths, to Happy Power at Newbury (7f) in April and runner-up, beaten half a length, to Archaeology at Doncaster in May off a mark of 90 in two runs for the stable.
He has run two huge races for the yard in hot handicaps. He was just touched off at Doncaster and the plans is to go for the Britannia. He is rated 93 and that should mean he will have no problems getting into it. I think a stiff track like Ascot will suit him and I am looking forward to that. The slight unknown is the quick ground but I think it won't be a problem.
