Francis-Henri Graffard Stable Tour
10 May 2019

Francis-Henri Graffard’s yard is enjoying a good start to the 2019 season and a hat-trick at Maisons-Laffitte on Thursday has set him up nicely for French 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas weekend that is rapidly approaching, in which he will be saddling the cleverly-named Watch Me in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, writes Liz Price.

The classic season arrives nearly too early for French-trained horses, who seem to take a little longer to get into their stride than their British counterparts. Hence, it was only in the second week of May last year that the Al Shaqab Racing-owned fillies Wasmya and Bowled Over made themselves known to the world with impressive victories in two maiden races.

The four-year-old The Revenant on the other hand, has already made waves by winning both of his starts this season and could very well come over to Royal Ascot in June to run in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes.

Since he started training in Chantilly in 2011, Francis-Henri Graffard has been a regular in pattern races and this season seems no exception.

Made his debut in England as a two-year-old and was then sent over to France to be trained by Francis-Henri Graffard. Lightly raced, he won a couple of condition races over the mile at the end of the 2018 season and was gelded in March 2019. Since then, he has massively improved and won his listed and Group 3 race over the mile in good style.
The Revenant won his two races this year, a listed race and the Prix Edmond Blanc. He was getting ready for the Prix Ganay but he wasn’t as well as he was before the Prix Edmond Blanc and so I preferred to bypass that race and he will probably run next time at the end of May in Baden-Baden in a Group 2 race over the mile. He is a nice horse, who can definitely go in soft ground, so there are some nice races towards the end of the season to target. The mile is his trip and that is why he has an entry in the Queen Anne. Should he perform well in Baden-Baden, we could go there as we have nothing to lose

Was stepped up in class in the Prix Vanteaux on her second start. The Group 3 race came maybe a bit early against the likes of Poule d’Essai des Pouliches fancy Platane.
She is a lovely filly. She has a typical Dubawi action and a lovely temperament. She has done really well physically. She won easily first time out in a small maiden in the provinces. I was optimistic the other day when I tried her in a Group 3 race at Longchamp. She finished fourth, but she was very green. The first time out was on the Polytrack, a tight track, so the second time, on the big galloping track of Longchamp, she was a little bit lost. But she didn’t disgrace herself and we are keeping our faith. She is a very well-bred filly. Her dam won a Group 1 at four, so we know that time will be beneficial to her. I’m sure she will get some black type.

Made her debut in a mile race at Maisons-Laffitte in heavy ground and won the race after making all.
She surprised me a bit. She is a nice filly, but she hasn’t showed me much in the morning and she is still immature physically. We gave her a lot of time but what she did the other day was very good. I will give her some time. She has shown that she can go in soft ground, so we can wait a little for the backend of the season. I would like to find a conditions race for her so that she can gain a little bit more experience.

A winner in the provinces over 1m 3 f after making her debut this year at Saint-Cloud.
She is a very small filly. She made a good debut at Saint-Cloud where she was beaten by a good filly. The second race was always going to be an important one, so I took her to Lyon and she won easily on the bridle. She has had two easy runs. She is improving and I don’t know her limits. She can stay and she can quicken. These fillies have a lovely programme for them. I think she will run in the Prix Cleopatre. I wouldn’t want the ground to be too soft for her as she is out of a Dansili mare, but when she ran at Lyon it was soft.

Was moved from England to France and has since run twice over the mile. Second on his first start, he then beat Melicertes in the Prix Machado at Longchamp.
I received this horse last summer. He is a lovely horse who strengthened a lot over the winter. I really like this horse. Unfortunately, the first time he ran for me the ground was bottomless at Saint-Cloud. I was hoping he might prove an exception as a son of Dansili and like soft ground, but that was not the case. He was beaten by the ground that day. I kept my faith in him and we went straight for the Prix Machado which is a very good race and he won it. He won his maiden on good ground. He is still immature mentally and I know there is improvement in him and so we will go step by step. We won’t run him in the French Guineas, he will go for a listed race over the mile at Longchamp a week after the Guineas. Hopefully he can step up in class as time goes by. He has a big stride and I think he can stay, but we will keep him on the mile at the moment. He does have an entry in the St James’s Palace Stakes, but as I said, we will take it step by step.

Finished fourth behind the Aga Khan owned filly Dariyza on her debut at ParisLongchamp over 1m 2 ½ f.
She finished fourth in the Prix de Chaillot. She is a lovely, big, good-looking filly who played up a little bit before the race and subsequently didn’t perform to her level. I think she will improve with time. She is a big galloping filly. I have a lot of faith in her and I hope she will prove me right. She will run in a maiden next and then we shall see.

Made her debut in England at the end of last season, then won a conditions race in Nantes over 1m 3 f. She was beaten in a Class 1 race at Lyon on her last start.
She won first time out this year. She is a filly that is struggling to come out of the winter. She is really behind in her coat and was a bit disappointing at Lyon the other day. But I think with a little bit of time she will be stronger. She is a nice filly who works really well in the morning, so I don’t know why she didn’t really perform the other day. She didn’t disgrace herself though, so I am hoping she will get black type later in the year.

Finished fifth on her debut in April in a mile race for unraced fillies, but made a different impression when she won her maiden over 7 furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte by three lengths.
Running her over the shorter trip was the key to success with her. She didn’t stay the last time. I am not surprised that she did it well this time. She is a nice filly who needed a bit of time. I would like to run her in a conditions race, but I am not sure I can find one. Other than that, there is a listed at the beginning of June, but that would be against the colts. I have to see where I will go but I want to keep her over six and half or seven furlongs.

A winner at two, she won the Group 3 Prix Imprudence over 7 furlongs on her seasonal reappearance.
She won her maiden at two in a listed race, quickening nicely. She won on her seasonal reappearance. She is a lovely filly. I have always liked her. She did very well physically from two to three. She is a filly who can quicken and she will run in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, which is a logical entry. She worked well and is in top form. I think she would prefer good ground, as she quickens well, but I think she can also act on soft ground.
