Carlos Laffon Parias Stable Tour
08 May 2019

Carlos Laffon-Parias has enjoyed a fabulous start to the new season, writes Liz Price

He has already won 13 races from 50 starts, which is a strike rate of 26%. And we are not talking handicaps or condition races, but valuable maiden and several black type races. He certainly looks like he has an extremely promising bunch of three-year-olds in his yard at Chantilly this year.

After winning both of her starts this season, the Wertheimer owned filly Platane has been singled out by racing aficionados as one to follow in the classic races and her handler will now run her in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary before aiming her at the Prix de Diane Longines.

Shaman, who also runs in the colours of the Wertheimer brothers, is another classic contender who is going to run in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

After his flagship horse Recoletos moved on to stud, he has every reason to look forward to the 2019 season.

He runs mainly in handicaps. He rarely wins, but is nearly always placed in races over the mile.
He is a proper handicapper, who is always in the first three. He is a great servant as he leads horses like Starmaniac. He is always in the money and he will continue to run in those races, where it is fun to follow him.

Worked his way into listed and Group company at the end of last year. He runs over 1 ½ m and longer. This year he was the runner-up in a 1 ½ m listed at Saint-Cloud, but then disappointed in another listed over the same distance at ParisLongchamp.
He ran very badly that last time. We must forget that race. I don’t know what was wrong. I think it was just a day off and as I said, we must forget that race. He is Group 3 placed over 1m 7 f and he will run over those longer trips again this year, but later in the season. I don’t want to run a four-year-old over the longer distances at this time of the year. The better races are all at the backend of the season and I will keep him over shorter before exposing him. I think from Deauville onwards I will run him over 1m7f.

Runner-up on her debut in a mile maiden at Saint-Cloud in March.
She made a good impression on her first start. She had a few little problems afterwards, but she is a good filly and I am going to take my time with her. I will bring her out during the second half of the season. She will run over the mile. Her dam has only produced Group winners, so I have high hopes for her.

Won on his debut this year and then was beaten in a Class 2 race at Paris Longchamp over 1m3f.
He is a very late developer. He produced a very good performance the other day at Longchamp when he was second. I will give him some time still, so that he can mature before he goes over 1 ½ m. He is coming into himself now and I think he will run at the end of May or June. He is more a horse for the second half of the season. He is a stayer.

Beaten by her stable companion over this trip last year, she was then the runner-up in the Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac, where she was beaten only a neck by the now retired Lily’s Candle. On her reappearance she dominated her opponents. She comes from the family of Arc winner Solemia.
She is a filly who should have won last year. In fact, I am treating her as if she had won and so I’m going directly for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. I know that the form of the Prix Marcel Boussac is not really holding up at the moment, but as the runner-up of a Group 1, she is entitled to go for the classic. As she was still a maiden, we just wanted to give her an easy run and so we ran her in a maiden at Chantilly. She is a bit delicate but shows so much potential in the morning. She has a lot of qualities, but you mustn’t work her too much. I think she can go in any ground, but she hasn’t run in soft ground yet.

Winner of a little maiden at Fontainebleau over 1m 3 f on his seasonal reappearance.
He is a horse similar to Himola. He won on his reappearance and I will keep him now for the second half of the season. Since we shortened the trip in the Prix du Jockey Club there isn’t really a race to run him in, as he needs to run over 1 ½ m. I don’t want to tire him out by running him over the mile and a quarter, so I’m going to wait for a bit. He will be able to run over 1m 7 f eventually.

Made her debut as a two-year-old and then won a nine furlong maiden at Chantilly on the all-weather track before stepping up in class in the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux, which she won comfortably enough. It was impressive to watch as she stretched and lowered herself when she approached the finish post.
She is a big filly. She only ran once last year, as I knew she was a bit of a late developer. However, she already showed some potential and I think it is important to run them at two. She made a good impression that day and I decided there and then to not run her again, but to keep her for the three-year-old season. She won well on her seasonal reappearance and again in the Group 3. I would have preferred to take her straight to the Prix de Diane, but there are ten weeks between the Vanteaux and the Diane, so she will be running in the Prix Saint-Alary. It is another step up in class and we shall see if she is up to it. She is an easy filly to train who has a good head on her shoulders.

He finished fifth in last year’s Group 1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, which might have come a bit too early for him, but which helped him grow up as he has gone from strength to strength. He has won all of his three starts since then. A listed winner on his seasonal reappearance, he won the 9 furlong Group 3 Prix La Force, which leads to the Prix du Jockey Club.
He is a very tough horse. Already last year he was involved in a few battles. He is very much like his father, in the sense that he is tough. He hasn’t got a huge turn of foot, but he has a very big heart. He is a fighter. We ran over nine furlongs as we didn’t want to run him in the Prix de Fontainebleau. We didn’t want to meet Persian King straight away in a Group 3, we rather meet him in a Group 1. However, I think that Shaman is as good over the mile as he is over nine furlongs. He has a lot of speed and he likes to gallop. He will go to the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. I have also entered him in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Winner of the Class 1 race the Prix Tourbillon, which is run over the same distance as the Prix du Jockey Club, he was then very disappointing in the Group 2 Prix Greffulhe where he was beaten more than three lengths.
I think we rode him the wrong way in the Prix Greffulhe. We waited with him in the back and I think he needs to be run more positively. I could be disappointed with his last run, but I think that is the explanation. I really like this horse. He shows a lot of ability and obviously has a lot of stamina. I would say that he is very likely to run in the Prix du Jockey Club, as he surely is better than what he showed last time.
