Alain de Royer Dupré Stable Tour
06 May 2019

It is fair to say that the 2018 season for Chantilly-based trainer Alain de Royer Dupré would not be his most memorable, even though Vazirabad’s third successive victory in the Dubai Gold Cup holds very fond memories for the man who looks after the majority of HH the Aga Khan’s horses, writes Liz Price.

The 2019 season is looking much more positive with a promising bunch of three-year-olds, of which many have already made an impression on the racecourse. He had high hopes for the unbeaten but still unexposed Siyarafina, but she didn’t convince in her last work and the decision against supplementing her in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches was made accordingly.

Alain de Royer Dupré, who has won the majority of French Group 1 races not once but several times, is known to give his horses time to come to their best and the last word has certainly not been spoken in the case of Siyarafina who also holds entries in the Prix Saint-Alary and the Prix de Diane Longines.

Older Horses
7 b g Manduro - Visorama
Beaten only ¾ lengths by Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup, the three times Dubai Gold Cup winner has not raced since. He was being prepared for a fourth attempt at the Dubai Gold Cup but suffered a setback that ruled him out.
At the moment he isn’t back to his former self yet. He still needs some time.
4 bay f Muhtathir - Jacira
A filly who has run mainly in 1 ¼ m handicaps. She was a winner in a mile handicap last year and this year has run twice over further. She finished fourth in a Class 2 handicap at Saint-Cloud, where she was not beaten far.
She is a handicap filly. She loves soft ground, so she is more a filly for the autumn. But we will try her at listed level next I think.
4 bay g Motivator - Antebellum
Has only run three times in his career. He was gelded after his debut last year. Since then, he has run twice this year and won both times. He won over 1 ½ m.
He was a late developer and we don’t really know his limits. He has won two conditions races, but he can do better. We only ran him in those to give him back some confidence after he was gelded. He is a horse with a lot of stamina and will run over 1 ½ m and further. He is a real stayer. With those kind of horses you never know where you will end up.
4 bay f Azamour - Shanndiyra
She was very fancied in the Prix de Diane Longines but could only finish seventh that day. She was then dropped in class, but never managed to get herself onto the podium, finishing third in a Group 3 and Group 2 race. She made her seasonal reappearance in the Listed Prix Zarkava where she was well held by Morgan Le Faye, who also beat her into third place in the Group 3 Prix Allez France.
The programme forces me to run her in the Prix Corrida on the 20th of May. But then, she will run over longer trips as she produced her best performances in races like the Prix de Royallieu, which is run over 1m 4 ½ furlongs. She is a daughter of Azamour, so she has plenty of stamina. I would like to win a group race with her.
4 bay f Pivotal - Shemiyla
Very lightly raced. Ran three times as a three-year-old. She won her maiden at the end of last year over 1m 3f. She made her seasonal reappearance in a Class 2 race over ten furlongs at ParisLongchamp.
She is small filly who doesn’t have a high rating. But she is better than her rating suggests. Her dam won the Prix Allez France and I think she will improve. I might run her in a handicap first but then I will go for a listed with her.
Three Year Olds
3 gre f Shamardal - Manerbe
She won her maiden on her first start at the end of last season. She ran over the mile on the all-weather at Chantilly.
She won her maiden nicely. The start of the season didn’t go as smoothly as I would have liked but she will run soon. She will run over 7 furlongs up to the mile. She has speed.
Starboard Beam
3 bay c Sinndar - Starboard Beam
Made his racecourse debut in the Prix Juigne at ParisLongchamp over the same trip as the Prix du Jockey Club. He was well beaten into fourth place that day.
He is a good-looking horse with a lot of stamina. He is a real looker. And with that family, he is a real stayer. I’m not sure yet where I will run him.
Invincible Spirit
3 bay c Invincible Spirit - Dalkala
Nowhere to be seen on his debut at Saint-Cloud, but a winner next time out at Nancy over 1 ¼ m.
I think he is a good horse, but he only ran in a little maiden in Nancy. We went to Nancy because the track is always good. The ground was soft, which is great when you don’t want to ruin your horses. He has the looks of a proper racehorse. He does what you ask him to do. And has lots of room for improvement.
Dawn Approach
3 che f Dawn Approach - Daryakana
Daughter of a Group 1 winning mare Daryakana who had lifted the Hong Kong Vase as a three-year-old. She is a sister to Dariyan, winner of the Prix Ganay.
She won very easily on her debut. She has a very good pedigree. She is a sister of Dariyan, her dam won a Group 1 and her grand dam won the Prix de Diane and the Prix de Royallieu. She has a solid background and what she did on her first run was very good. She will run in a Class 1 race at Chantilly, which is four weeks before the Prix de Diane. So it is a bit of a trial race, as the Diane is also run at Chantilly. If she runs well, she could go for the Prix de Diane. I think she would prefer better ground.
Kitten's Joy
3 che f Kitten's Joy - Ebiyza
She made her debut at the end of last year at Saint-Cloud when she finished third. She made her seasonal reappearance in a Class 2 race at ParisLongchamp over the mile where she finished towards the back of the field.
She ran badly at Longchamp. But I don’t think that was normal. She can galop and something was just off. She just didn’t breathe. She comes from the “E” family of the Aga Khan, which is a very good family. It’s the family with lots of stamina. She would prefer good ground.”
Golden Box
Gold Round
Kitten's Joy
3 che f Kitten's Joy - Gold Round
She made her debut at Chantilly this year when she finished third in a mile race on the all-weather.
Gold Round is by Dalakhani and is a sister of Goldikova. Golden Box needed a bit of time to recover from her first start, but she is very promising. I think she will need further, 1 ¼ m or even 1 ½ m.
Grace Spirit
Invincible Spirit
3 bay f Invincible Spirit - Gracefully
Ran twice as a two-year-old, but is still a maiden. Made her seasonal reappearance at Chantilly, where she finished eighth.
She is a sister of Group 1 winner Giofra. She disappointed me the last time. She is certain to improve, but it will still take some time.
3 bay f Camelot - Gyrella
She ran three times as a two-year-old and won her maiden over the mile on her final start last season at Angers.
Gyrella is a daughter of Ysoldina who produced Wings Of Eagles, the 2017 Epsom Derby winner. Mythic is a fabulous looking filly who won as a two-year-old. I was delayed a little bit with her and she hasn’t run yet at three but she is one to follow. She is really stunning.
3 bay c Mastercraftsman - Radiyya
Ran once at the end of last year and then was the runner-up in the Prix Amour Drake, a maiden over 1 ½ m at Saint-Cloud in soft ground. He was beaten three lengths that day by Khagan, who has subsequently been beaten in a listed. He finished fourth in a maiden over a mile and a half at Chantilly on his last start.
I really like Rayapour. He was the runner-up on his first start this season, where he produced a good run in the final straight. Unfortunately, the winner was subsequently beaten, so maybe that lot is not as good as I thought it would be. And then the last time he was out, it started raining and seeing that he is a heavy horse, who weighs well over 500 kilos, it just didn’t suit him. I think he has a nice future over 1 ½ m. He has a lot going for him. He is easy to train, is well built and easy to ride in a race. He is the type of horse that is going to get beat at the start of his career and who will then turn into a proper racehorse. He reminds me a bit of Shakeel, the 2017 winner of the Grand Prix de Paris, who also took his time before turning into a Group 1 performer.
3 bay c Nathaniel - Sanabyra
Fifth on his debut this year in a 1 ½ m race at Maisons-Laffitte.
He was seriously hindered on his debut. The winner leaned on him and the jockey actually was suspended for three days because of this, but they didn’t change the placings. So you must forget that run. I think he can go in any ground and will continue to run over 1 ½ m.
3 bay f Kingman - Shamakiya
She made her winning debut in a maiden over the mile at Saint-Cloud.
I always though a lot of her. So, I wasn’t surprised that she won her maiden. I think she has some real potential. She is a nice-looking filly and we shall see how she is after this race and then see if we can step her up in class.
3 b f Pivotal - Siyenica
Unraced at two but is unbeaten in two starts this season. She won the Class 1 Prix du Louvre over a mile comfortably from Commes and is now the likely favourite of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. She won very convincingly. The dam is a sister of Siyouni.
She never ran as a two-year-old. She was ready, but she coughed so she didn’t run. She really stands out. She has an incredible turn of foot. She will run in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. In fact, as soon as she had won her maiden, I planned her programme so that it would lead to the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. She looks like a Group 1 filly. We don’t know if she will stay the trip of the Prix de Diane and there might be some other fillies for that race, but we shall see. I wouldn’t want to run her in very soft ground.
Invincible Spirit
3 bay c Invincible Spirit - Zarkava
A son of Arc winner Zarkava, he made his racecourse debut in April at Saint-Cloud in a race for unraced three-year-olds. He was only beaten a neck that day by the Godolphin owned Melicertes. He then ran in a mile maiden at Saint-Cloud, where he was beaten into second place again.
He was impressive on his debut in April. However, when the other horse closed in on him, he suddenly pulled back. I don’t know if he got scared or if he hurt himself, but he came home as if he hadn’t had a run. Maybe because he was struck into in the bend, he got scared again when a horse came close to him in the final stages, but I don’t live in his head, so I don’t know. And last time out he again was just beaten. He is still green and not concentrated enough. It’s annoying, as he doesn’t do it in the morning. I will run him in another maiden and I think I will change racecourse and go to Longchamp to run him right-handed.
Two Year Olds
3-y-o gr f Exceed And Excel – Daltama
She is a sister of Dolniya. She is a beautiful filly who is not ready yet, but who looks promising. She has a sire who had speed and a dam who has stamina, so I’m not sure yet what distance she will like.
3-y-o b c Motivator – Mila
He will run soon. He is by Motivator. He looks good and he makes a good impression in the morning. He will be a stayer.
3-y-o b f Le Havre – Reine Zao
She works really well and will soon make her debut. She is a typical Le Havre filly, very beautiful and she would have already run, but didn’t please me last time, so I preferred to wait. But she is worth following.
3-y-o gr f Sinndar – Rosawa
She is a full sister to Rosanara, who had won the Prix Marcel Boussac and who was the runner-up in the Prix de Diane. At the moment she doesn’t show much, but she is a very late developer and could be quite good.
3-y-o b c Sea The Stars – Shareta
This is a son of Shareta. He is such a good-looking horse. He is still not ready, but looks very promising. I think he will only run in a month or two. He looks like his father and I think he could be good.
