Jean-Claude Rouget Stable Tour
03 May 2019

Jean-Claude Rouget had a big smile on his face when Olemedo, last year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner, was just caught in the Group 2 Prix du Muguet. The last season had not been easy for the Pau-based trainer, as the yard was still recovering from the virus that had affected a lot of his horses in 2017, but the start of the 2019 season is definitely looking rosy and Olmedo seems to getting back to his best.

Always very open about his horses, he did not hide that he has received 45 two-year-olds less than the previous year, but at the same time, he still has plenty of horses to keep him busy. He might not lead the trainers’ table in terms of prize-money won, but he is certainly leading it in terms of victories. In fact, his horses have already won 53 times and he is now hoping for classic glory.

Fillies like Etoile and Cartiem who could both run in the Prix de Diane, or Commes, a daughter of Le Havre, who is going to line up at the start of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, all give him reason to be optimistic for the classic season.

Here, Jean-Claude Rouget gives Liz Price of the lowdown on the pick of his string.

Older Horses
Le Havre
4 bay c Le Havre - Keira
Runs mainly in the provinces. Very consistent, he has already run four times this year. He was last seen in a listed at Toulouse over 1 ¼ m where he finished fourth.
He is a horse for listed races in the provinces. He is straight forward and is always an honest performer. He will run at Longchamp next I think.
Amazing Story
Silver Frost
4 b f Silver Frost - Amazing Story
She was unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old and everyone had high hopes for her for the classic season but then she injured herself in the Prix de la Grotte in April 2018, even though she still managed to finish third that day. She was then off until last month when she made her reappearance in the mile Prix de Valmondois. She finished fifth that day behind stable companion Pretreville.
She suffered a hairline fracture in her knee in the Prix de la Grotte. I think she would have won that day if she hadn’t suffered that injury. So she had twelve months off. She ran for the first time the other day, which wasn’t a bad performance. She couldn’t compete with those horses following a year’s break. I would like to run her at Ascot in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes. We shall see, it’s early, but she is well. If she wins her next race, she’ll go to Ascot.
Super Pie
Declaration Of War
4 b c Declaration Of War - Super Pie
Last year’s winner of the French 2000 Guineas, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, Olmedo was then the favourite of the Prix du Jockey Club, where he disappointed, finishing only thirteenth of sixteen runners. A month later he was brought back in trip but again flopped and was then given a long break of 265 days. He recently made his seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix Edmond Blanc over the mile, where he finished fourth. And then he was just beaten in the mile Group 2 Prix du Muguet.
We gave him a long break as he had back trouble. But now he is in great form. He pulled like a train on his seasonal reappearance and was still struggling to settle in the Prix du Muguet and later paid for having exhausted himself in the beginning. However, he was a lot more relaxed than the time before that and I think we are going the right way with him. The season is long and this was a very encouraging performance. He has to get back into the rhythm of racing, but this was a nice surprise and I think he will improve from this. I don’t know how high up he will go as the three-year-old generation last year was not very strong, but we shall see.
Pegase Hurry
4 bay c Acclamation - Pegase Hurry
Unbeaten this season in three starts over the mile.
Last year he was beaten on his debut by Sheikh Hamdan’s good horse Wusool. He then won a maiden and then injured himself, so he couldn’t run for the rest of the season. We brought him back in the winter and he has won three races on the trot. He is definitely a black type horse and I think he could win a listed race.
Three Year Olds
Cape Cross
3 bay f Cape Cross - Mintaka
Unbeaten in two starts this season. She lifted the 1m2 ½ f Group 3 Prix Penelope at Saint-Cloud.
There was absolutely zero pace in the Prix Penelope and with four hundred metres to go I thought she would finish third. But just like the time before that, she produced a serious turn of foot and she came and won by a neck. Only good horses have that kind of acceleration. I think in a true run race with more pace, we will see a different filly. Her main target is the Prix de Diane. She is not very big but well proportioned. She has lots of stamina and will be able to go over a mile and a half.
Le Havre
3 b f Le Havre - Leaupartie
A winner on her debut as a two-year-old over the mile, she made her seasonal reappearance in the Prix du Louvre, where she was beaten a length and a half by Siyarafina, who is now the favourite for the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.
I really like her. I was patient with her last year in view of her three-year-old season. She was beaten on her seasonal reappearance, but we went easy with her that day. She will run in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and I think she will have a great chance. I think she would prefer soft ground, but either way I don’t think that she is very much bothered by ground.
Le Havre
3 bay f Le Havre - Ennaya
A winner on her debut at two, she finished third in a 1 ¼ m Class 2 race at Saint-Cloud on her seasonal reappearance.
Ebony made a very pleasing seasonal reappearance the other day. If everything goes well, she will run in the Prix de Diane. I will give her one more race beforehand to see what she is capable of. I really like her though. She won well on her debut and she has a nice turn of foot. She wasn’t ready the other day.
Milena's Dream
3 bay f Siyouni - Milena's Dream
She never ran as a two-year-old and made her racecourse debut at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in January. A winner on her debut, she was successful again three weeks later when she ran again at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and then had a bit of a break. She was then entered in the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux where she was beaten a neck by the Wertheimer & Frère owned Platane.
She didn’t run at two as she had a bit of problem. Seeing that I couldn’t run her in the autumn, I then took her to Cagnes in the winter. I don’t like running my best horses in Cagnes, but I wanted her to get some experience. The classic races are early in the year, so you have to get them schooled beforehand. She will probably run in the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary or the Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud a week earlier. She is very well. She is entered in the Prix de Diane and the prep race will tell us if she stays. She can quicken, she has a nice stride and the only reason she was beaten the other day was because she had never had to fight before to win a race.
Joe Francais
Gibraltar Bay
George Vancouver
3 bay c George Vancouver - Gibraltar Bay
Was unbeaten as a two-year-old in two starts. Then finished fourth in the Group 3 Prix Noailles.
I thought that Soft Light would finish in front of him, but the ground was not soft enough for him that day and so he finished behind him. I didn’t train Joe Francais as a two-year-old. He is a very late developer. I’m surprised he won over 7 furlongs at La Teste as a two-year-old because for me he is a stayer. He has speed, but he doesn’t have a great turn of foot. If everything goes well, he will run in the Grand Prix de Paris in July.
Just Little
3 bay f Siyouni - Just Little
A winner on her debut at Deauville in March, she then finished sixth in a mile Class 2 race at ParisLongchamp. She is entered in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and in the Prix de Diane.
She had a pelvis problem at two and was stopped for 3 months. She is a very delicate filly, a very late developer. We shall see if she can run in black type events, but she needs more time. She is not ready to run in the big races yet, but we have all summer to see where she can go.
Rock Of Gibraltar
3 b c Rock Of Gibraltar - Makana
Made a winning debut last year at Deauville on the fibre track. Was then beaten half a length into second place in the Prix Tourbillon, which is run over the same distance as the Prix du Jockey Club. Also entered in the Epsom Derby.
He is one of the horses we like very much in the yard. He is going to run in the Prix de Guiche. His first run this year was very pleasing and we hope to run him in the Prix du Jockey Club. That is his main target. I think he is a good horse, he has a nice temperament. He has a nice stride and I think he will like good ground, although as a son of Rock of Gibraltar he might like soft ground too.
Lady Meydan
Le Havre
3 bay f Le Havre - Lady Meydan
High hopes for this filly who was a winner at two and finished her year with a second place in the Group 3 Prix des Reservoirs over the mile. She made her seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte, but failed to live up to expectations, as she struggled and only finished seventh.
She was a little bit disappointing on her seasonal reappearance. She didn’t run badly, just a bit rusty. I will drop her in class a little bit, in a listed or a Class 1 race and then bring her back again for a race like the Prix de Sandringham or something like that. She will not run the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. Maybe the Prix Saint-Alary could feature on her programme, but I’m not sure. I think she would like soft ground. She is quite small.
Naissance Royale
Charm Spirit
3 bay f Charm Spirit - Naissance Royale
Ran three times as a two-year-old and won her maiden in December at Deauville. She beat her stable companion Blanche Doree in a mile conditions race on the all-weather.
She was a bit fragile at two, like many Charm Spirit products. She won a good maiden at the end of the year and she won it well. She will run in the listed Prix des Lilas on Monday. I won’t run her in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. I think she will go for the Prix de Sandringham. She likes good ground.
Olympic Games
Super Anna
Olympic Glory
3 bay f Olympic Glory - Super Anna
Unbeaten in two starts this season over nine furlongs.
This one came out of nowhere. She is not yet come into her coat and yet, she has won easily twice. She is a nice surprise. She seems to be able to gallop. The other day she carried no weight at all, but she still did something special, so we shall see. She doesn’t show anything in the morning, but she could continue to surprise us.
Madame Beatrice
Style Vendome
3 bay c Style Vendome - Madame Beatrice
Disappointed on his seasonal reappearance in a Class 1 race at Bordeaux where he could only finish fifth.
He made a real impression first time out, but he is a very tense horse. We take him to the racecourse to give him a run and he stresses. He is already tense when he just walks in the parade ring. We will try and run him soon, but he needs to be all right in his head to run. He has potential, but he needs to unstress, he is too stressed at the moment.
Soft Light
Light Saber
3 bay c Authorized - Light Saber
Half-brother to City Light. Finished fifth in the Group 3 Prix Noailles, which is a prep race for the Prix du Jockey Club. His stable mate Joe Français finished just in front of him.
I think he is a good horse who likes soft ground. He is by Authorized so he has lots of stamina. He will run this Sunday in the Prix de l’Avre at ParisLongchamp. I am not really looking at the Prix du Jockey Club for him, unless the ground is heavy. I think I rather prepare him for the Grand Prix de Paris.
Spirit Of Brittany
Invincible Spirit
3 bay f Invincible Spirit - Ysandre
Won two races at the beginning of last year and then ran third in the Group 3 Prix Six Perfections over 7 furlongs. She made her seasonal reappearance in a Class 1 race at Fontainebleau.
She did well as a two-year-old. She also made a pleasing reappearance. I will run her in 6 furlong races this year. I think she will do well. She has a lot of speed.
3 bay c Kendargent - Verone
He ran twice as a two-year-old without getting himself onto the podium, but in 2019 he got his name on the board at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and then won a class 1 race at Fontainebleau under Christophe Soumillon. He was stepped up in class when he ran in the Group 3 Prix la Force at ParisLongchamp where he finished fourth.
He ran in a Group race as he seemed very forward and also because he had won a Class 1 race. I think he might run in something like the Derby du Midi (Bordeaux). He is by Kendargent so he wants soft ground.
Medical Kiss
Wootton Bassett
3 bay c Wootton Bassett - Medical Kiss
He beat stable companion Soft Light in a 1 ¼ m Class 1 race at Toulouse in April. Lightly raced.
He surprised us. He is a late developer but won a Class 1 race the other day. I guess I will step him up to Listed company now. I don’t really have a choice, but I am not rushed. I think he will make a nice four-year-old. 1 ¼ m will be his trip. I think he will want good ground.
