Saeed Bin Suroor Stable Tour
30 Apr 2019

SAEED BIN SUROOR has every right to have a spring in his step as he heads into Guineas weekend as he once again has a leading contender in the Qipco 2000 Guineas in the shape of Royal Marine.

The Raven’s Pass colt displayed his Classic pretensions when beating subsequent easy Ballysax Stakes winner Broome in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagadere at Longchamp last October and an unsatisfactory effort in a messy race for the Craven Stakes in no way undermines his chance in Saturday’s Mile challenge.

Royal Marine has pleased his handler in his exercise since and Bin Suroor bids to win the Classic for a third time after earlier successes with Mark Of Esteem (1996) and Island Sands (1999)

The year has already started with a bang for Saeed as he enjoyed what he considers is his finest horse when Thunder Snow gave him a ninth Dubai World Cup when beating Bronkowski at Meydan in March to gain back-to-back victories in that event and, as always, he has plenty of ammunition in his Newmarket base to make their impact felt in Group 1 company during the coming months.

With the 2000 Guineas approaching fast, Saeed kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about Royal Marine and other established and potential stars under his care.

Winner of seven of his 16 starts and currently rated 123. Scored by a short head from Blair House in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes at Caulfield (1m 2f) in October and subsequently runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Winx in the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley (1m 2f) later that month.
He is another who was a consistent performer at the top level for our stable in 2018 and recorded three wins at Group 1 level culminating in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes at Cauflied in October. He has had a break in Dubai over the Winter and I will look at options like the Group 1 Arlington Million and Group 1 Canadian International in 2019 for him.

Winner of nine of his 23 starts and currently rated 121. Short head winner from Homesman in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup at Caulfield (1m 4f) in October and had previously gained Group 1 successes in the Grosser Preis Von Baden (scored by a neck from Defoe) at Baden-Baden (1m 4f) in September and in the Group 1 Grosser Preis Von Berlin at Hoppegarten (1m 4f) in August.
This horse had a fantastic campaign during 2018 – he started his season with a win in the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes at Newmarket before winning two valuable Group 1’s in Germany. He was then shipped to Australia for the latter part of the season and put up a fantastic display when winning the Group 1 Stella Artois Caulfield Cup. He has had a break over the Winter and he will be seen in Group company again during the latter part of the year.

Winner of four of his 14 starts and currently rated 116. Gained his last success in the Group 1 Jebel Hata at Meydan (1m 1f) in March when scoring by a length and a quarter from Wootton.
He repaid the faith I had in him during the Winter when winning the Group 3 Singspeil Stakes, the Group 2 Al Rashidiya and the Group 1 Jebel Hatta on Super Saturday. He showed a fantastic turn of foot and confirmed his status as a horse with real potential in Europe. I may look to run him in the Group 1 Prix D’Ispahan at Longchamp in May.

Winner of three of his 6 starts and currently rated 110. Best effort in two starts last season when runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Desert Encounter in a listed event at Windsor (1m 3 1/2f) in August.
He is a lovely, big progressive type who slightly lost his way due to niggly problems last season. He is currently in full work and I am still hopeful that he could turn into a Cup horse for 2019.

Winner of four of his 17 starts and currently rated 111. Finished runner-up, beaten three lengths, to Dream Castle in the Group 2 Al Rashidiya at Meydan (1m 1f) in January.
This horse is much better when he is relaxed and has cover, so therefore he can throw in a poor performance now and again. He won’t be out until the backend of the season with a campaign in Dubai his ultimate goal.

Winner of five of his 13 starts and currently rated 109. Gained his last success in a handicap at Meydan (1m 2f) in February when beating Zorion three quarters of a length off a mark of 105.
He is a tough and consistent type who had a great Winter in Dubai winning two valuable handicaps and giving himself a ticket to run on Dubai World Cup night. He wasn’t placed but showed enough to suggest he is still improving and will be competitive in some of the valuable handicaps at the better meetings.

Winner of eight of his 23 starts and rated 121 (AW) and 117 on the turf. Winner of the Group 1 2018 Dubai World Cup at Meydan (1m 2f) by five and three quarter lengths from West Coast and landed the race for a second time when holding on by a nose from Gronkowski over that course and distance in March.
He made history at the Dubai World Cup meeting in March when winning the Group 1 Dubai World Cup for the second time underlining his incredible versatility. He has notched up four Group 1 wins so far in his career and is currently the third highest earning horse of all time. He remains in training for 2019 with a USA campaign currently his target.

Winner of three of his 7 starts and currently rated 101. Finished fourth, beaten only a length and a quarter, to Bartholomeu Dias in a handicap at Newcastle (1m 4 1/2f) in April off a mark of 100.
He is another improving four-year-old who has won three of his seven races and never finished out of the frame. His latest run over an extended mile and a half at Newcastle possibly stretched his stamina and a slight drop back in trip should see him winning again.

Winner of two of his 5 starts and currently rated 113. Finished fourth, beaten two and three quarter lengths, to Skardu in the Group 3 Craven Stakes (1m) at Newmarket in April on latest start. Landed the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere by a neck from Broome at Longchamp (1m) in October.
He provided the team with a Group 1 success in his juvenile season when winning the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on his third start. He wintered in Dubai where we tried him on the dirt but he clearly didn’t take to the surface. He returned to the turf to run an encouraging Trial in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket and he is set to take his chance in the Group 1 2000 Guineas where he should be competitive.

Winner of  both of his starts. Scored by half a length from Alrajaa in a maiden at Yarmouth (7f) in September and followed up with a Group 1 victory in the Criterium International at Chantilly (7f) in October when beating Hermosa three quarters of a length.
He ran twice at two winning his maiden at Yarmouth before taking a huge leap into Group 1 company when winning the Criterium International decisively. He wintered in Dubai and has grown and matured physically. He will be seen in Group company with Royal Ascot in mind.

Made a winning debut when scoring by a short head from Thanks Be at Haydock (1m) last Saturday.
She is a nice straightforward filly who had been working well and won on her debut at Haydock on Saturday. She is one who I feel will improve with racing and there should be plenty more to come from her.

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 94. Off the mark with a seven length win from Politicise in a novice at Windsor (1m) in October.
He was impressive when winning a novice at Windsor and stepped up to Group 1 company at Saint-Cloud in October where he performed well. He wintered in Dubai but suffered a slight setback but he is back in full work now and I will make a plan for him for the middle part of the season.

Finished second, beaten half a length, to Well of Wisdom at Newmarket (5f) in April.
He ran a fantastic race at the Craven meeting and his jockey was extremely complimentary. He should be seen out again at the Guineas meeting.

He has been showing up well at home and will start over five furlongs but should be seen to better effect over six furlongs later.

lost no caste in defeat when beaten two lengths by super mare Winx in the Cox Plate and he can prove an International star this season.
