Roger Charlton Stable Tour
23 Apr 2019

The season has, basically, just begun in earnest for Roger Charlton but the early indicators suggest that it will be another lucrative season for him and his Beckhampton team.

Aspetar showed he is going to be a force to be reckoned with when runner-up to Marmelo in the John Porter Stakes at Newbury recently and Momkin could well have earned his chance in the Qipco 2000 Guineas when beaten only a neck by Skardu in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket last week.

Charlton has already wrought out plenty of improvement since taking charge of Forbidden Planet but that colt showed there could be more visits to the well when narrowly beaten on his first attempt at a mile and a half at Newcastle on Friday and there are several more waiting in the wings that could soon display their mettle for a classy outfit.

Charlton kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can make their mark this term.

Winner of seven of his 26 starts and currently rated 104. Disappointing reappearance in the Group 3 John Porter Stakes at Newbury (1m 4f) this month when eight of nine, beaten 29 lengths, to Marmelo. Gained his last success in a listed race at Chester (1m 4 1/2f) in September when scoring by a length and a half from Hochfeld.
He was a little bit disappointing at Newbury and we will probably get the headgear back on. He is not an easy horse to place and he will run in either good staying handicaps or listed races – Chester suits him well.

He is a consistent horse and six furlongs is his trip. He won a Group 3 at Ascot in soft ground and he will run in the same sort of races this year.

Winner of four of his 12 starts and currently rated 107. Scored by two and three quarter lengths from Prince of Arran in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle (2m 1/2f) on his reappearance last June off a mark of 99.
He obviously had an aborted trip to Australia and has had a nice long break. He has come back into training last week and we will see how quickly he gets himself ready but a mid Summer campaign in staying races would be on the agenda.

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently rated 112. Showed improved form on his reappearance in the Group 3 John Porter Stakes at Newbury (1m 4f) this month when runner-up, beaten a length, to Marmelo.
I was obviously very pleased with his comeback race in the John Porter at Newbury. He showed improved form, a good turn of foot, and he only tired in the closing stages. He will run anywhere from a mile and a half to a mile and six furlongs. There are a lot of Group 2’s and Group 3’s in France which should suit him and anywhere else where there are suitable races.

He is a nice horse and his form looks progressive. He wasn’t ready to run in the Lincoln and he might start off in something like the Victoria Cup at Ascot and then we will see where we go. He will probably step up to a mile after that and maybe Ascot but we will see.

He had a good year last year and he is not easy to place. He might run in the seven furlong apprentice race at Lingfield on Friday and wasn’t beaten far but the handicapper might just have him in his grip right now.

He produced an improved performance when running at Kempton on his reappearance. He could step up to a mile and a half and it is not easy to find the right race but he will probably go to the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown.

Winner of three of his 9 starts and currently rated 93. Won three of his four starts for the stable this year (beaten only a neck by Executive Force in the other) and maintained his improvement when beating Pipes of Peace two and three quarter lengths at Kempton (1m 3f) in March off a mark of 86. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Bartholomeu Dias in a handicap at Newcastle (1m 4 1/2f) on Friday.
He was stepping up to a mile and a half at Newcastle on Friday but stayed the trip well and was a little unlucky as he was drawn wide. They didn’t go a great pace and he just failed to get up in the closing stages. He is a nice horse who I hope is still improving.

She progressed well last year from a rating in the 70’s to a rating in the 90’s and was three times listed placed. She will be aimed at black type race between a mile and maybe a mile and two in either France or Ireland or wherever.

Winner of two of his 4 starts and currently rated 86. Off the mark with a short head defeat of Enchanting Man in a novice event at Kempton (1m) in January and followed up with a length and a quarter victory from Formal Order in a similar event at Newcastle (1m) in February. Finished creditable fifth, beaten three and a half lengths, to Fox Power in the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle (1m) on Friday.
He has done well and he took a big step up in grade when he ran in the listed race at Newcastle on Friday but acquitted himself well. He won very easily at Newcastle previously and considering the strength of the opposition I would have to be happy with him. He’s a nice horse and there should be opportunities for him.

Winner of her only start at Newbury (7f) last September when beating Roxy Art a length and a quarter.
She won her only start at Newbury when the ground was a bit soft and we toyed with the idea of a Guineas Trial but decided against it. She could run at the end of the month either in a novice at Salisbury or a conditions race over a mile at Ascot.

He won in November over an extended mile at Wolverhampton. He is bred to appreciate a mile and a half and he will run in either a novice at the end of the month or maybe a Derby Trial but I don’t think he is a Derby horse at this stage.

The Owner was keen to see how good he was so we ran him in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket last week and he ran a fine race to run second to Skardu. It will be the Owners decision as to whether we run in the Guineas but he obviously ran a fine race in the Craven. We don’t know the value of the form of the race but it was a very solid effort.

He did well in his only start and being by Le Havre he will probably wants cut in the ground which we may or may not get. 3 b c Exceed and Excel - Crysdal
Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 75. Off the mark with a length and a quarter defeat of Al Messila at Kempton (6f) in December.
He is a sprint handicapper who won at Kempton in December and has a mark of 75. He probably wants fast ground and I doubt he will stay much beyond six furlongs but he might get seven.

Aspetar
looked an improved performer when runner-up in the John Porter on his first outing since being gelded and can make his mark in decent company over middle distances.
3063467
Creationist
ran well when facing a stiff task at Newcastle and looks sure to win more races.
3014084
Forbidden Planet
has proved a revelation since joining the Beckhampton team and can soon make up for an unlucky run at Newcastle on Friday.
2988721
Herculean
has been given plenty of time but always looked the sort to improve as he filled his massive frame and can pay his way this term.
3032103
Momkin
ran a blinder in the Craven Stakes when runner-up to Skardu and should make a name for himself over a mile this term.
2918562
Withhold
classy stayer who can find his fair share of opportunities this term.
