Hugo Palmer Stable Tour
09 Apr 2019

HUGO PALMER has made an encouraging start to 2019 with Mootasadir already providing him with a black type success in the Listed Magnolia Stakes at Kempton recently and the dreams of a possible second Qipco 2000 Guineas is still alive with the unbeaten Set Piece.

The Dansili colt has notched up victories in novice company at Kempton and Newcastle and the outcome of a gallop on Newmarket Racecourse this week could provide him with the green light to take the massive step up in class in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket next week.

Galileo Gold gave him that much coveted Classic success when taking the opening Newmarket Classic in 2016 when he notched well over £2 million pound in prize money and the past two seasons have seen the Kremlin Cottage Stable trainer sail through the £1 millions pound barrier with a numerical personal best of 87 set last year.

Stable stalwart Gifted Master, who has now won over £750,000 in prize money, has obviously been a major contributor in recent times and is poised to try and add to that tally   in the Abernant Stakes at the Craven meeting and Palmer will also be scouring through the programme book to find suitable pattern race opportunities for several others in his team in Europe as the season unfolds.

The Newmarket trainer has already not up 11 winners as his team come out of wraps proper and some exciting times lie ahead.

Hugo kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those he hopes can provide him with his share of success this time around.

Winner of 11 of his 29 starts and currently rated 110. Winner of a handicap at Newmarket (6f) in May when beating Baron Bolt a neck off a mark of 109 and also took the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood (6f) in August when short heading Justanotherbottle off a mark of 110. Solid effort in defeat then sixth, beaten nine and a quarter lengths, to Blue Point in a Group 3 contest at Meydan (6f) in March.
Well what a star – he is obviously a firm yard favourite and his sixth in Dubai last month when he won $10,000 pushed him through the £ ¾ of a million mark in career earnings. It is pretty incredible for a horse that won his two-year-old maiden at the Craven meeting. We are all very fond of him and he seems as good as ever. He will start in the Abernant Stakes and he normally runs well at Newmarket and we hope he wins the Abernant. I am not sure if he is good enough to win Group 2 races but we may have to travel abroad for Group races and the Goldene Pietzsche in Germany could be an opportunity. We need to travel him and if he was to put in a below par performance then he could go back to handicaps and try and win the Stewards’ Cup again. We obviously need to find the next Jason Watson to take an extremely valuable 5lb off! He is a joy to have and we are very lucky to have him.

Winner of two of his 11 starts and currently rated 106. Creditable fifth, beaten seven and three quarter lengths, to Invincible Army in the Listed Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster (6f) on his reappearance at the end of March.
He has been working very nicely over six furlongs and running him over six might be the right thing to do but it is more likely his next start will probably be in the Listed Spring Trophy at Haydock on May 11. He just can’t change gear over six and he will hopefully go for the John Of Gaunt from there.

Winner of three of his 17 starts and currently rated 84. Gained his last success in a handicap at Chelmsford (7f) in November when short heading Black Isle Boy off his current mark.
He returned sore from Kempton the other day but he seems much better now. He can make his presence felt over six and seven furlongs. He is in good shape and we kind of dream of him being a Wokingham horse but he has some way to go and need to win three or more to go there so that might be a bit of a pipedream.

Winner of three of his 6 starts and currently rated 96. Was scoring for the third time last season when beating Whitlock five lengths in a handicap at Nottingham (1m 2f) in October off a mark of 87.
He has done very well over the Winter and I am very pleased with how he has come to himself. He may well start at Kempton on Wednesday and we will see how we go from there. I think he will stay well and I kind of dreamed that he might be an Ebor type and if he is then he could be a Melbourne Cup type of horse. He is only rated 96 and has a long way to go but we will see but you always have to have these things at the back of your mind. A rating of 96 wouldn’t get him into the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot but that would be one of his early season targets.

Winner of two of his 7 starts and currently rated 90. Made a winning reappearance at Lingfield (1m 2f) at the end of March off a mark of 83 when beating Hollywood Road three and a quarter lengths and followed up with a clever neck defeat of Mythical Madness under a penalty over the same course and distance on Saturday.
He won last week at Lingfield and followed up under a penalty there on Saturday. How many more squeezes of the lemon there are I don’t know but I would like to see him on turf too and hopefully he can continue to be quite a nice money earner over ten furlongs.

Winner of five of his 15 starts and currently rated 106. Landed the listed Golden Rose Stakes at Lingfield (6f) in November by a head from Intisaab.
He will go for the Sprint Final on AW Champions Day at Lingfield on Good Friday. He will have his work cut out to beat Kachy if he is at the top of his game but it’s worth having a go and I would like to think he could make into a Wokingham horse come Ascot time.

He has really grown a great deal over the Winter and is a lovely big horse now. He has been gelded and all being well he will start in the Sefton Stakes at Newmarket next week. We will take his season from there and he could maybe be a Wolferton horse.

He hasn’t come back in yet but he has been gelded and he should strengthen up a bit. I am looking forward to getting him going again and he’s a gorgeous type of horse who was just very weak last year. I hope with a Winter on his back he can make his presence felt in mile and a half handicaps.

She will go to Fillies & Mares race at Lingfield on Good Friday. After that she will run exclusively in Stakes races. I think she will stay the mile and she has done well over the Winter. She is a real testament to the patience of her owners who have made training her very easy indeed. It has been fantastic to be able to take the time that she has needed and she has rewarded them. Judging on her work this year she can, hopefully, continue to reward them.

She returned from Goodwood last year with a stress fracture to her pelvis. In some ways it was a relief as I couldn’t work out why she ran so badly and I always thought she was a black type filly. I hope she can win from her mark and then, hopefully, step up from there.

Winner of six of his 8 starts and currently rated 112. Has won all six starts on the AW. Ended last season with a length and a half win from Global Giant in a Group 3 contest at Dundalk (1m 2 1/2f) in September and carried on the good work when beating Kelly’s Dino a length and three quarters in a handicap at Wolverhampton (1m 4f) off a mark of 105 in March. Scored by half a length from Extra Elusive in a listed event at Kempton (1m 2f) later in March.
He’s done remarkably well and is unbeaten on the AW. He has to convert that to turf now and there’s no reason on pedigree or the way he works why he shouldn’t. He could go to Newbury if the ground is good and I entered him in the Yorkshire Cup last week. We think he will stay and he could also be a Melbourne horse if he does stay.

He won’t be seen until the Autumn but he obviously has some very good form in the book. He split Masar and Roaring Lion in the Craven last year and he wants some cut in the ground.

I think he will start back at Kempton Easter weekend. He’s done very well over the Winter and I am pleased with his work. My only question is whether he will stay the mile but we will find out shortly and if he doesn’t stay the mile we will probably come back to seven with him. He could easily run in the Jersey and, as we found with Arbalet last year, there is quite a good programme over seven furlongs for him. The gound was too soft for him in the Horris Hill and I think he is progressive.

He has been gelded and he took that quite hard. I think it will be some time before we see him but I think he will make into a nice handicapper. He goes well on the AW but I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t go well on turf. I hope he can be progressive.

Finished fourth, beaten seven and a quarter lengths, to Vivid Diamond in a maiden at Nottingham (1m 1/2f) in October.
She ran well on her debut at Nottingham where she was a bit gassy and got lit up. She has been trained in a hood this year and seems to be all the better for it. I hope she will be able to start her season this month and she is a half sister to Best Of Days who won the Group 2 Royal Lodge for us and has since won a Group 1 in Australia. She is a valuable commodity and priority number one is to win with her. She does have a Group 2 entry in Berliner Hoppergatten which is owned by her owner and it would be magic if she could win that. All is good with her at the moment and we will see how she progresses.

He has done really well over the Winter and thickened out and strengthened. He isn’t vastly taller but he’s done very well and his work has been very pleasing. He will start back in what is always a hot race – the seven furlong handicap at the Greenham meeting at Newbury.

We thought he would improve for stepping up to seven furlongs but he didn’t really stay. The owners are keen to see him on grass and he starts at Pontefact on Tuesday. I think he will be a decent six furlong horse through the Summer and hope he will keep improving.

Hot Team will start off in a Group 3 race in Germany at the end of the month. He is in good shape and I am very pleased with him. He improved through all of last year and he’s not a big horse but I hope very much that he can win his Group 3. He will probably end up in Hong Kong at some stage as Mr Lee who owns him is Hong Kong-based. He is rated 102 and is nearly rated high enough for Hong Kong but not quite – winning in Germany might get him in and failing that we could maybe claim off his in the Britannia Handicap or even ask him to stay a bit further. He has done well over the Winter but hasn’t grown a lot.

Better effort when third, beaten seven lengths, to I’m Available when odds-on for his debut at Kempton (1m) in October.
Ironclad has let me down twice and he is an absolutely beautiful horse and he’s beautifully bred. We are looking for better things from him and I understand from Juddmonte that he is not the first of his relations to have promised marginally more than he has delivered. Normally they would be resistant to gender reassignment therapy but in this case if he lets us down again then I think that might be the only option. His work is that of a very good horse but so far off my rough figures he’s run to 62 and 64. It’s all well doing it swanky at home it’s a case of him doing it in public. However, he’s a big horse and Dubawi’s improve and it’s early days yet.

He has done well and I hope he will continue to do so. He will resume at Lingfield on Good Friday. He didn’t entirely handle the course but he was narrowly beaten there and may have been a little flat. The race time and sectionals were very good and he was seemingly unlucky that day. There is more to come from him and I would like to hope he could follow a similar path to Encrypted.

She is quite a well bred filly and being by Camelot she will improve. I also think she will be better on grass and she is quite lowly rated and is a three parts sister to a Group 1 winner. Winning with her is important but I would like to think she can win more than one. She has strengthened up and looks good so finger crossed.

She has had the one start and the writing was probably on the wall before then as she had gone in her coat and just wasn’t quite the filly she had been three weeks earlier. She has done very well through the Winter and I would like to think she will improve. She should be an eight to ten furlong filly.

Winner of both of his starts and currently rated 86. Made a winning debut at Kempton (1m) in December when beating Just The Man a length and followed up with a three length win from Sparkle In His Eye in a novice event at Newcastle (1m) in January.
He leaves me in a bit of a quandary as I think he might be a good thing off 86 in the Britannia but at this stages we will give him the chance to be as good as he can be and we can always come back and think about something else if he isn’t that good. His work is excellent and his race record is two from two and you can only beat what you are asked to beat. I am looking forward to getting him on grass and there is quite a possibility that if his work tell us it should be then he could start in the Craven. I am leaning towards that at the moment and there is a 0-85 handicap on the card that day so I hope to run on Craven day and I hope it will be in the Craven.

I am kicking myself as I left her a bit short on her reappearance at Newcastle the other day. I really felt she should have won that day and she doesn’t have any fancy entries but that doesn’t stop her from being a nice horse. There is not a lot of her but she is very athletic.
