Joseph O'Brien Stable Tour
03 Apr 2019

Joseph O’Brien has achieved more in racing at the age of 25 that most could dream of achieving in a lifetime, yet the remarkable thing is that he is only just getting started.

As a jockey he rode 30 Group 1 winners including two renewals of the Derby at Epsom before the inevitable day came where his lengthy frame made it impractical for him to make the weight required to ride on the Flat.

While he was still just 22 years old when that day came, he had already been playing a major role as a trainer under his father Aidan O’Brien’s name on the family farm in Owning, with him being given all the credit for the success of Ivanovich Gorbatov in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2016.

Having been granted his own licence to train in June 2016, O’Brien has already trained multiple Group 1 winners on the Flat and Grade 1 winners over jumps. In just his second full Flat season he finished second to in the Irish trainers’ championship and became the first Irish trainer other than Aidan O’Brien to train 100 domestic winners on the Flat in a calendar year since 1994.

With the Group 1 winners Latrobe and Iridessa leading his string into the 2019 campaign, Joseph sat down with Kevin Blake from attheraces.com to discuss his Flat team for the upcoming season.

Rated 93, he is a three-time winner on the Flat that has won three of his four starts over hurdles including the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival since he was last seen on the Flat.
He’s obviously been doing very well over hurdles this season, but he’s one we’d definitely like to get back on the Flat. It’s hard to say for sure that he has improved since being gelded or going over hurdles, but we’ll give him the chance to show it. Exploring longer trips on the Flat is also something we are keen on, as he has never run over further than nine furlongs and his form over hurdles suggests he should stay further than that.

Rated 102, she won a Listed race and a Group 3 at Leopardstown when trained by Jim Bolger last season.
She is a filly that came to us last year from Jim Bolger’s yard. She has a good attitude and stays well. She isn’t a filly that is flashy in her homework and seems to only do as much as she has to do. We’ll get her started in the Noblesse Stakes at Cork this weekend and kick on from there with her.

She’s a nice filly that came to us from Richard Fahey’s yard. She is a good mover with a lovely attitude and we are looking to start her off in a seven-furlong fillies’ handicap at Gowran Park on April 9th. The hope will be that she can progress enough to earn some black type during the season.

He’s a very nice horse. He finished off last season in good style after running below expectations a couple of times in the middle part of the campaign. We are very happy with how he has done in physical terms from three to four and we are aiming him at the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot.

He exceeded our expectations last season and had a really good campaign. He earned his place in the Dubai Carnival and ran well in his first start out there, but unfortunately picked up an injury that ruled him out of the rest of the Carnival. He’s on the way back now and we’ll be aiming him at the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot.

He had a good break after his run in Hong Kong and is back in good shape now. He seems to have wintered well and I’m really happy with where he is at the minute. We will look to start him off in the Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on May 6th and all being well we will look to run him in the Tattersalls Gold Cup back there on May 26th. We are looking forward to what will hopefully be a good season with him.

Rated 99, he won twice when trained in France and showed some promise in his two runs for O’Brien last season.
He came to us from France last year and was a little bit disappointing in his first two runs for us. We gelded him and gave him a good break after his last run. He has done well for the break and will hopefully be a better horse this season. He looks as though he’ll have no trouble staying two miles and that is the route we’ll send him down.

He has won two of his three starts so far and looks progressive. We were training him for the Irish Lincoln, but he had a little setback that ruled him out of it. He’ll be back for a summer campaign and can hopefully resume where he left off and continue to improve. A mile seems to suit him well.

Made a winning debut in a seven-furlong maiden at Dundalk in January.
She’s a lovely filly that won her only start at Dundalk back in January. We always liked her, but it was a bit of a surprise that she was able to win over seven furlongs on debut, as she is one that we always expected to be better with time and over longer trips. The plan is to start her back in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan on April 28th. We very much think she will prove to be stakes class and expect her to improve as the season progresses.

Made a winning debut at Fairyhouse in June and followed it up by finishing a close third in a Group 3 at the Curragh the following month.
She has only run twice and the form of her third in a Group 3 at the Curragh last July has worked out well since with the winner just being touched off in the Phoenix Stakes and the second winning the Moyglare Stakes. She was quite a late foal, so we eased off her after that and gave her time to mature. We have entered her in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown this weekend, but we might just wait for the Listed race over six furlongs at Navan on April 28th. We’ll probably give her a chance over seven furlongs or further at some stage, but she has plenty of pace and we are unlikely to rush her up in trip. She’s a full-sister to Hitchens and he got better with age, so we are hopefully she can do the same. We think she’s a very nice filly.

Made a winning debut in a seven-furlong maiden at Dundalk in October.
We always thought that she was a nice filly, but it was a bit of a surprise that she knew enough to win on debut. We expected her to run well and then be hard to beat on her second start, but maybe I underestimated her. She’s a well-bred filly that is a half-sister to the dam of Magna Grecia, so getting black type will be the main objective. She could potentially start off in the Salsabil Stakes at Navan on April 28th. We aren’t sure what her best trip will end up being, but it’s likely to be around a mile or a mile-and-a-quarter. We’ll be guided by what she does on the racecourse in that regard.

He has done well in physical terms from two to three. We are looking at starting him back in a three-year-old only handicap at Naas on April 29th. Ran very well in both his starts to date at Dundalk, most recently finishing a close second to the subsequent Listed winner Playa Del Puente in a winners' race.
He’s a very nice colt. He came to us quite late last season, but he showed up well at home from an early stage. He made a lovely debut and we thought he’d win his second start, but he bumped into a smart horse in Playa Del Puente and finished second to him. We gave him a little break after that and he makes his comeback in a mile-and-a-quarter maiden at Leopardstown this evening. The next step will be dictated by what he does there, but he should make up into a smart colt. He should stay a mile-and-a-half in due course.

She’s an exciting filly that did very well for us last season. We are starting her off in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Saturday and I’d expect her to need the run there. From there, she will hopefully go onto either the 1000 Guineas or the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Trip wise, we’ll feel our way with her as we go. Her pedigree suggests she should stay further than a mile, but she doesn’t lack pace either. We’ll be guided by what we see on the racecourse.

She’s a lovely filly that made a winning debut at Dundalk. She’s a very well-bred filly being out of Yesterday and getting some black type for her is the obvious goal. She should be ready to start off in three or four weeks. She is bred to stay well and should be suited by a mile-and-a-quarter in due course.

Rated 89, he won a maiden at Gowran Park in October prior to running below form in the Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown.
He won his maiden in good style and ran ok in the Eyrefield Stakes. He is one that takes a lot of work to get fit and he’s about three or four weeks off a run. I’d expect him to improve from his first couple of runs in fitness terms as that’s just the type he is. We’ll probably start him off over a mile, but I could see him going a mile-and-a-quarter in due course.

Rated 103, he won a maiden at Down Royal and a Listed race at Dundalk last year.
He improved all the way through last season and we are very happy with how he has progressed in physical terms over the winter. The plan is to start him back in the 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Saturday. We aren’t sure whether his best trip will be a mile or a bit shorter just yet, but we’ll be guided by what he does on the racecourse. He looks as though he’ll prefer fast ground. We are looking forward to seeing what he can do this season.

Rated 98, he won a maiden and a winners' race at Dundalk prior to finishing third in a Listed race back at that track in March.
He improved with every start through the winter and ended up finishing in the frame in a Listed race on his latest start. He had a busy winter, so we’ve given him a break and will look to have him back on the racecourse in the summer.

Rated 89, she made it second-time lucky when winning a maiden at Naas in October.
She was suited by the drop to six furlongs when winning on her second start in a maiden at Naas. She is entered in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown this weekend, but we might wait for the Listed race over six furlongs at Navan on April 28th. She probably wants an ease in the ground to be seen at her best.
