Courier Wonder gears up; Hot King Prawn works to a return

Gearing up for a return to racing and a campaign which is set to encompass a Group 1 challenge, the unbeaten Courier Wonder clocked a slick trial effort this morning under a motionless Joao Moreira.

Bouncing to the front from the get-go, Courier Wonder crossed the line hard held by Moreira throughout in his first public appearance since last season.

“We’ll trial him again and then based on what he does then we’ll make a plan from there, there’s not too many options, so it’s just matter of whether he runs on the 17th (of October) or not, but at the moment I would think he’s ok,” trainer John Size said.

Five-for-five across his career, the prodigious talent geared up this morning for an expected return in next month’s Group 2 Premier Bowl on 17 October, pitting him against Wellington and stablemate, Hot King Prawn

“He seems alright, it looks like everything is working, I’ll know more when I go home and check him but he’s been good, he’s come back fine, so we’ll give him another trial and see what he looks like then,” Size said.

Champion Sprinter Hot King Prawn is also nearing a return as he eyes yet another tilt at the Group 1 LONGINES Hong Kong Sprint over six furlongs.

“He’s working and he looks good – he’s an older horse so every day is a different day.

“He might not make it for the 17th (of October) – he’s a bit behind schedule for that but he might make it for the 21st (of November) and then the International Races,” Size explained.

A seven-year-old now, the steel grey son of Denman grabbed a maiden Group 1 title in last season’s Centenary Sprint Cup and has proven an incredibly consistent performer across his 24-start career.

Hot King Prawn

“I’m not pressing to get too many runs out of him, just a couple,” Size said. “It’s up to him, I just have to observe him and see what’s going on and when to stop him.”

Tomorrow night, Size has the inexperienced A Smile Like Yours in search of a first Hong Kong win, contesting the Class 4 Moorsom Handicap over six furlongs.

“He hasn’t won a race but he looks due soon off last start, if he can repeat that he’s going to have a good chance,” Size said.

The galloper closed gamely for third last time out behind Fortune Carrier and Xponential, respectively.

Karis Teetan takes the reins and he’s sure to snag a win very soon, if not tomorrow evening.

Graduation looms for high-flying apprentice Jerry Chau

Closing in on that apprenticeship-ending victory, jockey Jerry Chau drew high praise from 13-time champion jockey Douglas Whyte following his win aboard Gameplayer Times in the opener last Sunday.

“Jerry rode a 10 out of 10 race,” Whyte said. “It’s easy to watch it from a public’s point of view, but he was sitting box seat (and) they were going terribly slow, so he could have been in all sorts of trouble.”

Chau then brought up a double in the following race aboard Cordyceps Six, moving to 68 career wins in Hong Kong, two shy of the 70-win mark required for graduation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Apprentice Jockeys’ School.

“He waited for the horse in front to roll off the rail and it was the winning move. If he tried to come out, he would have run into trouble. It just shows the young man is now riding with a lot of confidence and he deserves to be winning races,” Whyte said of Chau’s steer atop Gameplayer Times.

Taking five rides at the midweek fixture, Chau looks to have a pair of excellent chances aboard last-start winners Noble Desire and Harmony Fire.

Noble Desire is a two-time winner from his last three starts; tomorrow night he breaks from gate eight for Chau and Whyte.

“Last season he was still a little bit green and still finding his best trip but at the end of last season I found he was more mature and more focused in his races - I’ve been very happy with his improvement,” Chau said.

Speaking of Harmony Fire, a three-time winner at the Valley, Chau said: “He has a very nice draw, he has gate two, he trialled very well the other day behind Stronger - I was really happy with his trial and I think he has a good chance.”
