Barry Faulkner's US Racing Preview
26 Sep 2021

Belmont and Woodbine deliver a Sunday seven in my betting window, with a good spread of races, five of them coming on turf.

The feature is the Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont (Race9: 10.16pm BST) a six and half furlongs dirt sprint which has attracted just five entrants but is a little doozy. Unbeaten three-year old Bella Sofia (1) races out of her age group for the first time and comes up against a good yard stick in Godolphin’s Lake Avenue (4). It is a fascinating contest and, although trainer Jorge Abreu has been playing future expectations of the younger filly, she is clearly an exciting prospect.

As usual I hope, the analysis below guides you to some profitable play. However, whichever way you make your picks, good luck everyone!

Belmont and Woodbine races for Sunday, 26th September 2021

Belmont 6 (8.38pm)

Maiden Special Weight – New York bred Fillies 2-year-olds – Six furlongs – Dirt

Sixteen juvenile fillies have been entered for the twelve slots available is the starting gate before they go three quarters of a mile on the main track.

Frustratingly, the best form on offer from those that have run comes from two of the reserves. At the end of August at Saratoga, Twist Just Right (16) led most of the way, going six and half furlongs on debut, before getting collared just outside the furlong pole, when finishing1¾ lengths 2nd, with 1-2 favourite that day, LET HER INSPIRE U (13) a head back in 3rd on her second outing.

It is unlikely that Twist Just Right (16) will get a run here but Let Her Inspire U (13) may do just that. She had all sorts of trouble in that race, stumbling badly at the break, then getting a bump on the home turn. Todd Pletcher’s charge has been feisty at the gate on both her starts but she has major chance here – if she gets in.

Silver Fist (1) and TRINITY TITOLI (9) were 2nd and 3rd, 1¾ lengths apart behind a wide margin winner, over this trip at Saratoga just over five week ago. The speed figures they earned there were well off the par here but the latter, at least, did have some excuses.

She lunged at the start and was coaxed to take close order on the inside but got tightened up after a couple of furlongs, losing momentum, and that was that. I think she has a decent chance of putting that run behind her today.

Pimenova (2) showed decent early foot on her debut in the middle of August at the Spa, going five and a half furlongs turf for trainer Danny Gargan. Chasing the early pace, she weakened late to finish 5th, beaten 2½ lengths. She had clearly shown something in the morning because she was sent to post as 2-1 favourite for her first race. However, I’m not convinced by her dirt credentials with a daughter of Sadlers Wells as her dam and she’s a pass for me.

Shane’s Risk (10) and Venti Valentina (12) look the likeliest of the newcomers.

Selection: Let Her Inspire U (13)  if in Trinity Titoli (9)  if not

Woodbine 6 (8.55pm)

Maiden Optional Claimer (C$40,000) – 2-year-olds – Five furlongs – Inner Turf

Eleven juvenile maidens, all but one of them geldings, have been entered for this sprint on turf, with one on standby in case it is switched to the Tapeta track. Ontario bred runners can get in without the necessity of running for a tag.

Silent Farewell (1) is one of them. He looked a decent prospect when closing to finish ¾ of a length 2nd, despite hitting traffic trouble, in a Maiden Special Weight going six furlongs on the outer turf track here at the beginning of August. Later that month, he was sent to post as 7-4 favourite in a Listed Stake going 110 yards further.

However, he could never go the swift early pace there and finished a well beaten last. The drop in grade here should help but his lack of early toe on the cut back is a concern.

Big Brown Brewski (2) is another ‘not for sale’ Ontario bred. He made his debut in this grade at the beginning of this month, when he took field along going six and half furlongs. However, that was on pretty tepid fractions and, although he gave way grudgingly late on, finishing 4th 1½ lengths behind the winner, with Wild River Wolf (4) 1 ¾ lengths back in 6th it looked an average effort.

Wild River Wolf (4) was blocked in the stretch there and put up a better effort next time, after racing more prominently early, albeit in a C$25,000 Maiden Optional Claimer on Tapeta, where he again took advantage of the waiver.

Double Saw (6) showed some late interest on debut on Tapeta and looks sure to come on for the experience. His speed figure wasn’t far off the par here and a good run wouldn’t be a surprise.

DROP A CARIBOU (9) is another who had a satisfactory debut in Maiden Special Weight company on Tapeta for a trainer whose strike rate with his second timers is more than double his overall batting average. He broke out first time up and I think he can at least hit the par here. I like this lad’s chances.

Afikoman (3), Rapid Reload (5) and Similar Taste (7) are the newcomers here. The former an Ontario bred but debuts with a price on his head. He is by Jimmy Creed, who has a 16% strike rate with is juvenile debutants and his dam is 7 from 7 with her offspring, including turf Stakes winning sprinter. Rapid Reload (5) is by second season sire Reload, who is 26% with his debuting two-year olds so far, and is out of a dam who is three for three with her produce.

In contrast, the sire of Similar Taste (7) bats at just 5% with his debs. He gets the double whammy of blinkers and Lasix first time for his debut for sale from trainer Mark Casse.

Belmont 7 (9.10pm)

Claimer ($40,000) N2L – 3-year-olds and upwards – One mile and half a furlong – Inner Turf

Fifteen older males have been entered for this turf test with two of them on the reserve list and another couple who carry the Main Track Only proviso. One thing they have in common is that they are all trying to add a second tick in the win column. Oddly, for a contest at this sort of level, there is plenty of pace in the race with Hurricane Andrew (1), Count Down (3) and Justintimeforwine (6) in the line-up.

TURF

Prefect (2) was having his first race for over four months when running in this grade at Saratoga in July, over this trip on yielding turf. He raced just off the pace there, before moving four wide into the stretch to challenge and was a head 2nd at the furlong pole, before running out of gas to finish 5th beaten 3½ lengths.

He was claimed out of that race but has been on the bench for over two months since then. However, it may be reassuring that he continues in the same class today.

MADE MY DAY (5) has raced just three times this year. They were all in $50,000 Starter Allowance events and he finished 3rd in the first two. In June, he took the show dough, here going seven furlongs, when finishing 3¾ lengths behind the winner and, at the beginning of August, he took the same finishing position but was only beaten a neck and half a length back when going a mile.

Mike Stidham’s charge was bumped at the break over this trip, also at the Spa, and made an early bid but faded late when finishing 5th, 4 lengths adrift. He returns to the course and distance over which he broke his maiden and is major contender today.

Agent Creed (7) took on ‘Mission Impossible’ last time, in a strong entry level open Allowance, after failing to get out of that condition in a couple of goes against (lesser) locally bred rivals. His best ‘numbers’ fit and, with so much pace in this race, he has an ideal closing run style but he isn’t getting much, if any, class relief her compared with his State bred Allowance runs.

Public Information (11) is the first reserve here and would have a major chance, if he gets in. He finished 1½ lengths 2nd in this grade three weeks ago, taking advantage of a blistering pace. A similar set up today can only help his chance.

DIRT

The MTOs here are Rocco Strong (14) and Road to Success (15) but the latter looks much the stronger of the pair but he is moving up in class here.

However, Royal Realm (4), who has only ever raced on dirt, ran well in this grade going nine furlongs at Saratoga in July and was claimed out of that event by trainer David Donk. He cut her back to seven panels in August but she found it all happening a bit quick for and should do better back at this sort of trip.

Woodbine 7 (9.26pm)

Claimer (C$25,000 / C$23,500) N2L – 3-year-olds and upwards – One mile and half a furlong – Outer Turf

A dozen older males plus one reserve have been entered for this Claimer and all of them are trying to double their win tally.

In late July, trainer Sid Attard stretched out MAVERICK MAN (1) to a mile and fitted blinkers for the first time to his charge. It did the trick and he finished with a flourish to get his first win, in a C$25,000 Maiden Optional Claimer.

He returned three weeks ago in a C$40,000 Allowance Optional Claimer where he put up a cracking effort to take the show dough at over 30-1 locally. He would take all the beating here with a repeat of that effort.

However, enthusiasm is tempered a little by what happened to Fifth Season (3) when he had a similar effort before returning to this grade recently. Nevertheless, I am prepared to give this lad the benefit of the doubt with just five runs on his CV.

Just over five weeks ago, going a mile in this grade, Fifth Season (3) was sent to post as favourite after earning a more than respectable speed figure in a C$40,000 Allowance Optional Claimer, over this trip on his previous start.

Unfortunately, he could not get to the principals and there was a significant decline in his speed figure, when he finished 5¾ lengths 5th, with English Castle (13), a reserve today, and Stop the Humbug (5), 4¾ lengths and 2¾ lengths ahead of him in 2nd and 3rd.

Carl G (6) has finished in the frame in three of his four starts this year, without winning. However, they were all at sprint trips but he did show a bit of form at longer last year. For me, he has to improve to get involved.

Selection: Maverick Man (1)

Belmont 8 (9.44pm)

Allowance N1X – New York bred Fillies and mares 3year olds and upwards – One mile – Outer Turf

Fifteen locally bred distaffers have been entered for this Allowance and, with three of them having the Main Track only stipulation, the other twelve are guaranteed a place in the gate.

TURF

Just over three weeks ago, Just Ok Is Not Ok (13) was beaten ½ a length into 2nd in this grade. It was a pretty good effort considering he had stumbled just after the start, the third consecutive time, he’d had a less than perfect break. In that race, he had Lookin to Fly (3) ½ of a length behind 3rd, with pacemaker Golden Oldie (2) a nose back in 4th and English Breeze (4) 2¼ lengths adrift in 6th.

My Lips Are Sealed (7) stumbled at the start in this grade in the middle of August but was soon pressing the pace. She got involved in a right battle all the way there but, having seen off her pace partner, could not hold a stalker who pounced late to win by 2 lengths. She is undoubtedly a talented lass but the issue for her is the presence of another front ender, Golden Oldie (2), in the line up, particularly with her drawing the inside berth. A pace race seems likely which is good news for the closers but not necessarily for this lass.

MARVELOUS MAUDE (8) has only raced twice. She made her debut in the middle of June, going a mile in a Maiden Special Weight. In that race she did well to finish 2½ lengths 3rd, behind Just Ok Is Not Ok (13), after breaking out badly and needing to be snatched up, which cost her a lot of ground and momentum.

She was away for ten weeks after that and returned in an ‘off turf’ contest going nine furlongs on the slop which she won cosily by a neck. She clearly has more to do here but looks to have plenty of upside.

DIRT

The MTOs here are the coupled Caramocha (1) and Chasing Cara (1A/15), together with Amity Island (14). However, if this switches to dirt I’ll take a chance with Epona’s Dream (6) whose dirt form is as good as any in here and she is likely to be a much more generous price.

Woodbine 8 (9.59pm)

Starter Optional Claimer (C$7,500 / C$15,000) – 3-year-olds and upwards – Five furlongs – Inner Turf

This race is open to runners who have raced for a tag of C$7,500 since the beginning of 2020 with a claiming option of C$15,000.

At the beginning of July, on his season return after a break of eight months, Executive Sight (2) won a $C10,000 Claimer going five and half furlongs on Tapeta, with Mas Chikilin (4) ½ a length back in 2nd. Six weeks later, he ran in this grade over a furlong further. After a bump at the start, he raced prominently in battle for the front with two others - including Brass Compass (5) - and they rather set it up for a pair of closers who swept by late on.

He has been away for slightly over six weeks since then but more of a worry is that his Tapeta form looks stronger than that on turf.

MAS CHIKILIN (4) was also having his first run of the year when finishing just behind Executive Sight (2), when they had a right set-to from the get go. This lad also ran in this grade on his next start, in an ‘off-turf’ contest towards the end of July.

Again, he drove the engine there but was passed in the last of the six furlongs by the winner, but he did hold on for 2nd. He has been away for nine weeks since that outing and, although he is running on turf here, his speed figures are comparable on both surfaces.

Hitters Park (6) has run here four times this year and finished in the frame each time. He won a C$20,000 Starter Handicap in June, going five and half furlongs on Tapeta, with pace setting Red Frog (7) fading to finish 2½ lengths 2nd. Hitters Park (6) followed that by finishing a late charging, head 2nd in Starter Optional Claimer, where the qualifying tag was a C$25,000 but he ran for the C$40,000 claiming price. That was over this course and distance but it was back to the synthetic surface, going five and half furlongs, for his next start, when his selling price was slashed $10,000.

Again, he found one too good, going down by ¾ of a length and, although he was only beaten a neck in the same grade, over 110 yards further two weeks ago, it was only good enough to earn him the show dough. He has gone to post as favourite on his last three starts and will probably do so again today.

Belmont 9 (10.16pm)

Gallant Bloom Handicap G2 – Fillies and mares 3-year-olds and upwards – Six and half furlongs – Dirt

The Sunday feature sees a face-off between a four-year-old filly, who has blossomed into a very useful sort this year, up against a year younger lass who is taking on her elders for the first time; it is a fascinating clash in prospect.

BELLA SOFIA (1) is the new kid on the block. She started her career in a Maiden Special Weight at the beginning of May with an explosive victory, beating five overmatched rivals by 11 lengths and up. A month later, a first go in Stakes company at Listed level, didn’t look too ambitious and, after bobbling at the break she finished 2nd beaten a length. Under the rules in New York, she ran without Lasix there but she was back in the medication when easily winning an entry level Allowance in July.

Those three races, were all over six furlongs here and she was stepped up to seven at Saratoga at the beginning of August in the Test G1, again sans medication. She could hardly have been more impressive, storming home by 4¼ lengths. She has been freshened for seven weeks since then but has been given a strong slate of works leading up to this return in another Lasix free contest.

Lake Avenue (4) has been a filly in search of a trip in her career to date. She won a G2 going nine furlongs as a juvenile, so it is probably no surprise that she started last year as a possibly Kentucky Oaks contender, particularly with her stout pedigree by US Standards.

However, her three recent runs, in a G3, G2 and last time in a G1, have seen her finish runner-up each time, while earning some fancy speed figures along the way. Last time out, going seven furlongs she was beaten just 1¾ length by the machine Gamine. She will set the youngster a proper test.

Don’t Call Me Mary (5) was awarded a big ‘number’ on her most recent start but it came in a Pennsylvania bred event at Parx. It would certainly make her competitive here, if it is legitimate. However, I am sceptical because it is 10 points above her previous top.

Honor Way (3) finished 2nd in the 2020 renewal of this race and earned some strong speed figures last year but she has been below that level so far this year.

Selection: Bella Sofia (1)
