Paul Quigley's US Racing Preview
23 Sep 2021

There is a mixed bag from five venues in Thursday’s Stateside Preview. The reason is two-fold. Sky Sports Racing will be covering Wolverhampton until 8.30pm. I wanted to stay away from any races before that time as they may not get covered by the channel. In addition, rain is in the forecast at all of the tracks. Just in case races scheduled for the grass get switched to the main track, I’ve stick to dirt only contests. The exception is Woodbine. If their turf events get moved to The Tapeta, the fields are less likely to get decimated as they may everywhere else.

Remember if any Stateside tracks or races is not covered by Sky Sports Racing, you can watch all of them on the ATR Player. That’s for free.

The Stateside Preview from Belmont Park, Delaware Park, Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park and Woodbine for Thursday 23 September 2021

Woodbine Race 6 (8.53pm)

Claiming $5,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – Non winners of 2 races lifetime – 1 1/16 Miles – Tapeta

Based on speed figures they are capable of running; this is a very well-matched group. That said, two runners are likely to be clear at the top of the market. Secret Path (5) and Quantum Velocity (4) were placed in a higher claimer for one-time career winners over course and distance last month. The first-named cut no ice is a swiftly run race sine. He is a big player on the class drop but it’s a long time since he put his head in front. Old rival Quantum Velocity (4) has had less chances to win career race number two. He may be set for a peak effort on his third run back after a layoff.

With the market leaders hardly being standout and are around 1/2 coupled, this looks a good spot to have a stab or two at a price chance here. The trouble is, there are loads of possibilities. Last time maiden claiming winner Gendragon(8) is one. PARTY OF NO (3) and Cash Advance (3) are others. They ran in the same seven-furlong claimer at the start of the month. Both broke their maidens over course and distance. Party of No (3) has tactical speed. He has upside at about 10/1.

Tracking Gold (6) has run two nice races at this level since he returned from a three-month absence. He goes for a trainer having another solid meet. The handler of PICKHIMUPSUP  (7) is based at Fort Erie. He broke his maiden there over seven furlongs on turf last month. If he makes the lead on his own, odds of about 25/1 will looks very generous. Fellow shipper Synchromesh(1) is back at the scene of his maiden win.

Selections: Party Of No (3) and Pickhimupsup (7)

Gulfstream Park Race 7 (8.59pm)

Claiming $20,000 (split conditions) – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – 6 ½ Furlongs – Dirt

This looks pretty open with runners going in either direction class-wise. Appointed(4) and BATTLE CRY (5) have been tackling better company. Appointed (4) has been racing on the turf over a mile. Her last win came sprinting on the dirt. It was a no doubter, scoring by eleven lengths. She looks spotted for action. So too does fellow class dropper Battle Cry (5). Not only was she running against better ten days ago but it was her first start May. Treat that race almost as a workout and she can be expected to improve off that. She has form on wet tracks if the rains come.

Race Day Speed (6) has been freshened up since a clear-cut victory over course and distance early last month. She is a progressive three-year-old who contends off the speed figure she ran. So too does Sweet Penelope (3). She made the early lead and ran away and hid from a field of maiden claimers last month. The blinkers she wore for the first time did the trick. She’s a price chance despite the class rise. She may not make the lead this time as Karatbars(1) looks speedier. She’s a four-year-old with as many starts in over two years. Now plunged in class for her return, she may give a good account of herself if she makes the lead on her own.

Mizzen(8) is one of a few fillies in here whose best races could be ahead of her. She broke her maiden on career start number three in July. On her return at the start of the month, she faded in a swiftly run starter event. She gets class relief second time back after that lay off. High Glory (2) has even less races to her name. She was claimed off a near seven length victory in a maiden claimer last month.

Selection: Battle Cry (5)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (6 Bets): Appointed (4), Battle Cry (5) and Mizzen (8)

Laurel Park Race 8 (9.07pm)

Allowance Optional Claiming – 3 year olds and upwards – 7 Furlongs – Dirt

INSPECTOR FROST (3) looks a worthy favourite. The former Godolphin-owned three-year-old has been freshened up since a couple of runner-up tries at Delaware and Pimlico. The latest was at today’s level. He’s not quite lasted home over an extended mile so this long sprint distance may get him over the hump. He worked smartly over five furlongs for his return and has the speed to stay close if the early fractions are not too quick.

The likely leader here is the in-form Souper Emperor (8). He followed up a maiden win with back-to-back second places at Timonium. The most recent was in a similar race to this. That form looks a tad inferior to Inspector Frost (3). What may bring them closer at very least is the likelihood of the lead on his own. That is especially true if on an off track that is favouring frontrunners.

He's A Shooter (1) returned to the dirt at Timonium at the start of the month. The result was a thirteen-length drubbing of a field of maiden claimers. He’s in good hands and is worth considering despite the class rise. Based on the fractions he set last time, his rider will have to work a trio from stalk mode here.

Wicked Prankster (4) went to the sidelines after running a fair second at Pimlico at this level in May. His runner-up try at the same track a month earlier was contending form.  He is of interest. So too are Dreaming Of Carats (9) and Mr Everything (2). They were second and fourth in a claimer here on turf only last Friday. The first-named has form on dirt. Not so Mr Everything (2) who tries the surface for the first time. He has a good off-track pedigree so rates a long look if the rains come.

Selection: Inspector Frost (3)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): Inspector Frost (3) and Souper Emperor (8)

Woodbine Race 7 (9.23pm)

Maiden Claiming $15,000 – 3 year olds and upwards – 1 Mile – Turf

Strike A Beat (9) is likely to be all the rage here. He drops a notch in class after a quartet of placed efforts in better company. The speed figures he’s been running are simply better than his rivals. He’s ran well on Tapeta too so if this race comes off the turf, it won’t harm his chances. He ticks all boxes except one. He’s a seventeen-time loser and has made a habit of pulling defeat out of the jaws of victory. His runner up try last month was the eighth race in a row when he’s come up just short. This maiden claimer may be weak enough for him to saunter home. It is a worry when you have to take around even money.

The trouble with trying to beat Strike A Beat (9) all of his rivals aren’t bomb-proof and have shown less ability. Personal Journey (1) is almost as exposed as the favourite is. He holds a few of these off a third at this level at the start of the month. Afleet Eddie (10) may have a little more upside as a win play. He was claimed off a runner-up try over six and a half furlongs. He did run third over course and distance in July. There may be better to come from him.

GRAND ALLIANCE (7) finished well behind Afleet Eddie (10) last time. It was his career debut. Based on his pedigree, he may come into his own now given more ground to race over. He’s a reach to put it mildly in this spot even with second time out improvement. Maybe a small interest on him ‘just in case’ is the way to go here.

Dominant Factor (4) was a late closing runner-up on Tapeta at the start of the month. He has shaped well on both starts on turf. He’s a price chance on either surface. That may be the case with Pride And Passion (5) who gets class relief.

Selection: Grand Alliance (7)

Delaware Park Race 8 (9.45pm)

Maiden Claiming $8,000 – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – 5 ½ Furlongs – Dirt

Offlee Graysful (5) was dropped to today’s level a week ago. The result was a decent runner-up try. That was over a mile. She did filly the same placing in a higher-priced maiden claimer over course and distance at the end of last month. She’s very consistent but is starting to look a bit exposed after ten career starts. This looks a weak event so if she runs her usual solid race, may get over the hump.

Slight preference in this spot is for COCKTAILS AT EIGHT (6). She ran second, beaten a neck in a $15.000 maiden claimer here ten days ago. That was an improved try on her first start for her current trainer. She had no excuses, being clear on a soft lead. The chances are, she’s on or near easy fractions again under her 7lb claiming rider. Off her last run, she holds Bad Temper (7) and Normalizeddeviance(3). She drops in class and the slight cut back in trip should suit.

Emme Roo (2) and Normalizeddeviance (3) filled the places at a safe distance in a $5,000 maiden claimer here a fortnight ago. That was a slowly run affair. This is hardly a deep race so they have to have some sort of chance. Emme Roo (2) did run a career best and is progressing with racing.

Selection: Cocktails At Eight (6)

Woodbine Race 8 (9.53pm)

Maiden Claiming $10,000 – Fillies and Mares – 3 year olds and upwards – 6 ½ Furlongs – Tapeta

A big field for the finale here but a likely clear-cut favourite in POLAR APPEAL (14). She ran first time for sale last month. The result was a head runner-up try. She didn’t run as well second time back but her fourth in the context of this race was still a contending effort. Now she takes another drop-in class. Her extreme wide post and being unproven over this extra furlong are slight concerns. She looks the gal to beat now running at the bargain basement level.

Born To Be Good (1) has been placed in back-to-back races at this level. The first was on Tapeta. She’s a thirteen loser but looks a solid place chance under Antonio Gallardo. Rosa's Soul (10) could be more than that if she can clear off on an easy lead. She did throw away a big advantage when second last month but she did have to work hard early on. At a bigger price, Overstate(7) has some upside. She was gradually left behind after stalking the pace on her return last month. Second time back and a drop in class may see result in a much better effort.

Debutante Deeply In Love (13) catches the eye here. Not particularly on pedigree but on her trainer’s record. Norman McKnight has a fine record with first time starters. A market move for her may be significant. Less so Flaxen(2) whose trainer is not one of the most prolific on the grounds to say the least. The three-year-old ha shown a little ability in better maidens than this one over further. The cut back in distance, drop in class and racing with Lasix for the first time make her interesting at a very big price.

Selection: Polar Appeal (14)
Longshot: Flaxen (2)

Laurel Park Race 10 (10.11pm)

Maiden Claiming $25,500 – 2 year olds – 6 Furlongs – Dirt

Unless the newcomers or class droppers are live, HEAVENLY TRIP (5) could be odds-on here. He’s been plunged in class by trainer Brittany Russell who is all about winning. He runs first time for sale since losing by a nose on his debut at Pimlico on debut in July. A couple of runner-up tries in maiden special weights followed. His last race was on the turf and that wasn’t too bad either.

Barn mates Summer Ash (3) and Sloe Gin Biz (2) have placed form at today’s level. The pick of their form is not far off that of the favourite. They look solid place chances. Less so Holiday Avenue (6) but he’s only once-raced. He was claimed off a runner-up try at Timonium early last month. More ground, second time out improvement and a trainer change are angles for thinking he’ll improve.

The trio of newcomers all look interesting. Claudee Boy (4), Jim Bome Bome (7) and Notion To Tapit (8) all debut for capable trainers. A market move for any of them may be worth noting. The last-named is a half-brother to a quartet of winners.

Selection: Heavenly Trip (5)

Belmont Park Race 7 (10.16pm)

Maiden Special Wight – New York bred 3 year olds and upwards – 1 Mile – Dirt

Barclay Tagg’s Blitz To Win (5) is the horse to beat here. He ran below his best when a distant third over nine furlongs at Saratoga last month. His best form has come over one turn. If he repeats his runs over six and half furlongs including a runner up try prior to that, he’ll be awfully tough to beat. He’s worked well since his last race and has form over this strip. He has form on off tracks so won’t be inconvenienced if the rains come.

Blitz To Win (5) will be a short price and there are a few possible dangers at bigger odds of reward. Got The Gold (4) and V Pattern (3) come out of the same sprint maiden at Saratoga last month. The clear-cut winner is an improving type who scored in an allowance event next time. Got The Gold (4) made eyecatching late headway from the rear to be second. He looked much improved on his return after a claim by Chris Englehart in March. He’s bred to get this extra two furlongs. That is also the case with V PATTERN (3) who was never a factor. He was making his second start and belated three-year-old debut. Now racing with Lasix for the first time over more ground, he should give a far better account.

There are a few possible sleepers in here. Scherzando(1) gets back on dirt for his return and has been working well. So too has Seizer(9). He may leave debut run behind in the same race as Got The Gold (4) and V Pattern (3). He’s worth a look at double-figure odds. So too is Big Castle (8). He tries the dirt for the first time after a trio of runs on the turf.

Selection: V Pattern (3)
Exotic Play: Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): V Pattern (3) and Got The Gold (4)
                         Reversed Exacta/Forecast (2 Bets): V Pattern (3) and Blitz To Win (5)
